So, why would the average joe choose this over their smartphone / tablet? I mean, judging by the video that's the target audience.. I don't buy it though.

Because he can't play Zelda BotW on his smartphone/tablet. Not even Skyrim. Or a good version of NBA 2k. Because he can't continue the game that he's playing currently on his console on his smartphone. Because he doesn't have a decent controller with his smartphone. Because his battery will die and then his smartphone will explode if he plays more than 1 hour on his smartphone. Pretty smart this average Joe, don't you think, avoiding all these issues?

I wouldn't count on it. I'm putting as much stock in "primarily a home console" as I put in "the DS is a third pillar" circa 2004.

They've got enough titles to support the 3DS through 2017, including some in-house exclusives. Not a ton, but enough to keep it alive should Switch completely bomb.

I'm excited to see what third parties do on this thing. I'm honestly surprised that the list of western publishers is as big as it is. Future details should be exciting.

I think the controller stuff seems really awesome... that was a great choice in my opinion.

The controller when fully assembled is the only weak link imo.

It looks goofy and a bit uncomfortable, almost as bad as the Dreamcast controller (that thing was trash). Thankfully there's the Pro option.

I really want this to be more of a portable successor rather than a console successor, I've been really disappointed with Nintendo's home consoles since the N64 but they have constantly delivered on the portable side, with one or two notable exceptions.

If the switch has the weird libraries of a Nintendo portable system on and I can play them on my TV it might just become my console of choice (I only use my PS4 for Japanese stuff and Xbox for shooters, everything else is PC at this point for me anyway).

Its going to be hard going into EB games today to pick up BF and not put a preorder down just on the promise of that.

One thing I don't understand is if Nintendo has come out and said this is a home console first and foremost, why would people be forced to buy all the mobile tech including screen that would sit useless 90% of the time. Doesn't it make it essentially a Kinect if the vast majority of the time you wont use it but still have to pay for it.

As some people have pointed out, market it as a home console in the western market where home consoles reign supreme, market it as a portable in Japan where handhelds are stronger.

I'll admit I would rather have one or the other rather than a handheld/home console hybrid but the concept still seems cool. I'll no doubt buy one for the Nintendo exclusives but price, battery life etc. will decide when exactly I make that purchase. Deeply disappointed about lack of BC too but I guess that was unavoidable to keep this design.

GIS'ing nintendo switch gives me a whole page of images of the console.

Are we certain there is no BC at this point? Not for physical media but digital purchases.

Huh...

I'm actually underwhelmed by this. It's more like WiiU than some might care to notice. Most people will not be carrying this outside the house. That makes the 3DS still relevant, which I appreciate as I love 3DS.

Anyway, it will come down to the games as always. I'm sure Nintendo will create some amazing games for Switch, so I'll probably buy one eventually. But I'm not excited by the system itself.

You're getting an incredibly powerful handheld device, feel happy.
That is not a handheld. It's best described as a portable, perhaps. You can easily carry it from room to room, but this is not a small device that you casually bring along. Heck, even the 3DS XL and Vita are pushing the size envelope for a handheld. Switch is beyond that envelope completely.

I wonder how stuff like Ace Attorney or Layton will look like on this.

On the other hand the thought of something Xenoblade also being portable (yeah I know about the New 3DS port) just fills me with happiness.

I have a feeling Nintendo was more concerned with Apple copying them then Sony/Microsoft. Apple could definitely poop out a new Ipad with controller add ons to the side of the device and even have you hook it up to the TV easily too

anybody determined the estimated size of the dock yet based on the size of the usb ports?

my limited skills show its about 7 usb ports high, and 6.5 wide

using the vertical set up, that makes it about 72 mm tall, and 29.25 mm deep, cant really determine how wide it is with my low rate skills

update on this, the tablet itself looks to be around the 72mm tall, and only 9mm thick/deep

I think I'm a buy my 1st Nintendo console since GameCube, granted the software is there on release day. The hardware looks very intriguing to me and I'm a sucker for Zelda. If they announce a Metroid I'm there day one

I like what I see so far. I just had a few things I really wanted to jot down.

1. The name is definitely a step up from Wii U. I feel it accurately describes the console's gimmick this time.

2. It seems like they're fully realizing the vision they started with the Wii U, where as now you're no longer tied down to the controller's wireless range from the console.

3. Being able to detach the controller from the screen sounds great since I hated how heavy the Wii U controller was to hold for long periods of time.

4. Being able to play with two different people using one controller sounds really interesting, but I'm a bit worried about developers even taking advantage of that fact.

5. I don't know how the launch line up will fair, but I'm already optimistic if Splatoon and Skyrim are going to be launch titles.

And that's all I got. Here is hoping we don't have to wait long to hear more information.

I'm not interested in the handheld but if I buy the console I'm paying for the handheld technology because it's all integrated. Don't like this.

I think 3DS will be supported for 2017 but then be dropped.

And for fall 2018 Nintendo will bring out Switch Go which is basically a smaller version without a dock and controls are not detachable. This would be basically their new handheld.

The 3DS will always be relevant in my heart. If you're talking about Nintendo still developing 3DS games a couple years from now, I can't see that happening.

No motion, no touch.. Good

Like the versatility

Need to see what the OS like but it's looking like a buy for me

Motion is on the thing, the Joy-Con can be used like a Wii Remote + Nunchuk afaik.

How do you hook up game cube controllers to this though?

In the dock maybe?

The two USB ports on the dock.

The dock has 2 2.0 USB ports and 1 3.0

Is the 3.0 one confirmed? If that's so there's your storage sollution.

Nintendo Switch? Are you serious? :/

That's probably a better name than the Wii U though. The concept doesn't seem that bad either.

Nintendo console names at this point are almost irrelevant. When Nintendo announced "Wii" as the console name we couldn't believe it and made fun of it endlessly for weeks and weeks. But then eventually it just becomes one with the system and works, almost organically. The same will be for Switch.

No this thing needs to be $199 max. Even if Nintendo takes a loss on their console for a while, at least it'll get their machine into people's homes again.
