Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

The Switch controller looks very clunky on the first sight, but I think it's going to be comfortable in the end.

Made a comparison with the XBO controller.

I wonder if this thing will have app support? Imagine pokemon go but with PS4 style graphics and such? Could this work? I feel Nintendo learned from their mistakes. They will not price this too high. They did it twice with 3DS and WiiU and both TANKED at launch horribly.
Both also lacked compelling games at launch. NSX will have BOTW.

We still don't know, and probably won't know for sure for a few more months.

Zlatan, an user from Anandtech and apparently "in the know", claims the Switch is "3 times slower" than the Xbox One, and that has pretty low bandwidth, which will limit the console's capabilities.

He also claims, and take this with a grain of salt despite Zlatan's apparent 'credentials', that Nintendo's lowest allowed resolution for games will be 504p, and that many games will "upscale" from that resolution.

We'll just have to wait and see.

My excitement has worn off and I'm now level headed.

And I realized all we know so far is that it's a tablet. The only way this will succeed is if they NEVER release a handheld during the SWITCH life cycle. If the home base had some hardware and advantages to playing while docked I would be more accepting.

We literally have a Nintendo tablet with secondary controls. I can't help but think this isn't going to be a runaway hit.

Of course it's not.

It's a terrible idea given the state of handheld gaming outside of Japan, and the pretty saturated tablet market (and not hungry for AAA games).

Also, big screen, big battery, powerful mobile chip, you're in for an expensive console.

I wouldn't expect less than $299, dock included.

Its bound to bomb hard if it's priced at 300 bucks and the hardware is not very powerful.
Software determines value. It launches with Zelda and maybe a port of sun and moon day one with some third party stuff? Gangbusters.
There's absolutely no reason to create an entirely separate SKU simply to bundle the Pro Controller. Nintendo will just sell it for $50.

Hopefully Nintendo has learned from Wii U and offers a single SKU at launch. Make things simple for consumers.
Well I assume the more expensive sku will come with a game or more internal memory or something along with a controller.
Agreed. Also, just read your tag. Did any of your twitter rumors pan out?
Hell no. I knew they wouldn't pan out when Emily and Nate showed me their Nvidia stuff back in July.

I suspect we will get few if any handheld games at launch - 3DS-like games - in order to sell the Switch on the console experience. Then in 2017-2018, more of the smaller games will start appearing more frequently. At least from Nintendo's own games.

Yeah no way in hell are games at 504p (540p?).

Some people really are pulling stuff from their ass.

You know why I don't believe it? The Wii U was able to run the games at a minimum framebuffer of 720p right? The Switch is more powerful, but can only run games at 504p? lol

I know Nintendo don't have a history of powerful hardware but I can't see them going backwards. But if we're to believe the "experts" the Switch will natively run games at a 504p framebuffer and output to your tv at 720p.

I know Nintendo haven't confirmed touchscreen support but majority of people assuming that's in just Nintendo didn't focus on it

But what about Motion controls. Leak suggested the detachable controllers had advanced gyros. Is this likely not in or maybe Nintendo hasn't focused on this yet.

What I'm really hoping happens with this is that you could have a hard drive attached to the dock, and swap games between that and the internal (hopefully with SD card option) tablet memory. That'd make things REALLY nice for portability and is probably the most pragmatic option if we get blu-ray size games.

From what I recall in the video those Splatoon players weren't particularly focused on using the right analog stick. Granted those ARE actors for a device that had just been revealed, but it was kind of a key aspect of Splatoon so I really, really hope they do that. And I'd hope touch screen should be obvious because what fucking tablet doesn't do that these days? If it's not there then I'd have to assume it's a casualty of trying to compromise between handheld and console, and I really don't think that's a good area to make a compromise for because you could either use that middle area for touch-type stuff or just... tell them "ok, now you gotta play with the pad out!"

I know it became a meme, but Nintendo is doomed.

They are too prideful as a company and thus wanted to create an improved concept for a tablet centered console (like the Wii U), couldn't apparently understand that the market for tablet is already lost and volatile.

Now you have a handheld console that will most likely have a poor battery life, be bulkier than their competitors, and can't compete with home consoles from competitors either in terms of power, so porting for it would mean releasing a significantly trimmed down version of the game graphically.

This makes no sense to me.
You can actually see in the trailer that most of situations depicted that would make you leave your gaming session at home but yet continue to play are far-fetched: you won't see friends calling for you at your window and be forced to take your game with you instead of spending time with them. You won't want to play in the park while you walk your dog.

This is so dumb to me.
I'm sorry, I'm so disappointed.

To be fair, I actually can see people playing the Switch while letting their dog be active in the park. Same goes for other similar situations. Playing a new Zelda game while on the bus/train to work or anywhere else? That seems more than reasonable. Imagine all the kids that would want to play a new Zelda while on a long car ride.

I feel that there definitely is a group of people that would be interested in taking their gaming session at home with them when they go elsewhere.

I like what I'm seeing with the Switch.

I just hope the base unit can receive a video stream from the handheld so we can still get Nintendoland style Asymmetric multiplayer.

Luigi's Ghost Mansion and Mario Chase need to live on beyond the Wii U. But it seems unlikely.

Would be neat to show another trailer focusing on casual mode, using motion control ala wii sports, vertical mode with a gameboy joy-con. So much potential.

After what happened with the Nvidia vs AMD fiasco I'm not believing any of this bullshit.

why don't we just call it the Switch, it's literally 6 letters long

people abbreviate PS4 and XB1 because nobody has time to type out Playstation 4 or Xbox One, that shit is too long

If this has a good battery, usb or sd card slot, good browser, and the ability to watch movies then I might just replace my actual tablet with it.

You have handheld gaming for that though.

No reason to completely limit home console gaming just for the rare times you'll have to go outside and play.

Things I just thought of:

Why are the + and - buttons like they are. Looks like raised rubber?

Why is the share (?) button an unlabeled square

Most likely they were made like that to keep people from touching them accidentally. If it was a traditional button with a + label, it would look strange and users would want to press it in sideways mode.

Most likely Nintendo wants to iconify the share button in the same way their home button looks like a house.

They just haven't focused on it yet. There is more to this machine. They were very dileberate in what they communicated today. Didn't want to focus on too much.

Or NS?

Or is there a reason people are avoiding that abbreviation? There's probably a game or something that I cant think of that uses it.

Nobody in their right mind would play a legit game like zelda while taking our their dog. Some Facebook, WhatsApp, maybe a quick Sudoku puzzle.

Also kids these days don't care about Zelda.

Compared to other consoles, this makes me want to play it. I think the brilliant part of the commercial is the activity included in it showcasing the console's capabilities. It's capable of so much in such a small package.

It's a cheerful, happy and really well put together advertisement and it's unlike the sometimes intense console announcement trailers like the XB1, PS4 etc.

When can i pre-order?

As for the Anandtech rumors. The only sources i even entertain acknowledging after the last year are Emily, Laura and Nate on gaf. The rest are just ass-pulls as far as i´m concerned.

I'm pretty sure that most games will be 720-1080p native, regardless of what Zlatan says.

Even if the Switch is 3 times less powerful than the Xbone, let's remember that it is still more powerful than the Wii U.

wat
Yeah pascal Tegra should do 720p30-1080p30 easily for most AAA games today. So I don't buy it.
