Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

as someone who hasn't played videogames in years, I think it looks really cool. Probably won't buy it but I can see the appeal. Nintendo's best looking hardware ever IMO. It actually looks sleek and cool.

Using the two little mini-controllers looks kind of ridiculous, but would probably be perfect for kids.

We saw things in those games that were obviously not in the Wii U versions, like the new Splatoon character customization and the double items in MK8. That to me suggests this isn't WIi U footage.

I'm willing to admit this is all edited for show and isn't concrete proof, but I doubt this is all direct Wii U footage.
MK and Splatoon are ports I believe, and I can't comment on what upgrades Nintendo is making for them. Same for Zelda. But you simply can't comment on the Switch's performance based on this video, especially about perceived differences when it's portable.

And, also, yeah, Switch is more capable than the Wii U. Don't worry.

its baffling to me that people are disappointed by the assumed graphical capability of this

like it being a hybrid was the thing that was going to make nintendo not push cutting edge tech for their next console

Is Nintendo basically just targeting adults with this? The size of the Switch would make it fairly unwieldy for a little kid to hold. In other words, is Nintendo's new strategy to make the DS series a kid-only device? I can't see Nintendo having two portable device platforms targeting the same market.

Probably there will be a cheaper, smaller, portable-only device that runs the same games and ecosystem.

The size of this feels too large to be viewed as a handheld with TV out, even if that is what it is.

Nah, have you seen the amount of kids on ipads??

Have you seen the wealth and price of iPad apps kids play and breadth of functionality a tablet has? Most kids who have tablets have a cheap android, though, and it offers the same value proposition.

That is a hurdle, IMO.

The Wii U Gamepad isn't that hard to hold for kids and this is slightly smaller than it.

I love you for this.

Everything I said is reasonable if you assume the video is any indication at all of how the system will run. Maybe you don't think the video is, and that's perfectly reasonable too, but this is all that we have to go on. At this point, with what little we've seen, it doesn't look great to me.

I hope I'm wrong. I really don't want Wii U+ level graphics.

If you go by just the video, you see the Skyrim remaster, coming soon to Xbox One and PS4, running at minimum 30 FPS. Wii U couldn't run that. Much higher minimum specs on PC than the original release.

Yeah. Mind you, they didn't feature a single kid in the preview so it's not like I can fault people for suggesting that the marketing isn't aiming this at kids. But at the same time, the notion that this is some unwieldy cumbersome device for children strikes me as hollow. My son was playing rudimentary iPad games at around 18 months on the full-sized tablet.

Guys, what the hell is the grip Mochizuki is talking about?

Edit: Saw GX video explaining. I can't believe they will sell it without the grip.

Damnit. Thanks for the info anyways.

The only new thing I have interest in purchasing from that trailer now is Mario, all 6 seconds of it lol. I hope they really bring it, whenever they're finally ready to fully unveil this thing.

Literally the most exciting thing I learned from the preview is that Mario has a behind the back camera angle again :/

* you see footage of skyrim composited into the frame for the trailer

Let's not make assumptions about power until we see the actual hardware running software itself.

I have no doubt that the hardware itself is more capable, but whether developers will be able to push it without disrupting the portable experience is another thing. Again, the video isn't anywhere near empirical proof, but if this was all post processing you'd assume they could have gotten footage in there that wasn't so choppy. None of the TV stuff that was apparently edited in had that problem. At the very least, I think it's reasonable to wonder how smooth the portable experience is going to be compared to docked play.

I'm kinda torn by this.

The form factor would actually make this my ideal console for third party titles, since I spend a lot of time on the road. It would be my first Nintendo console since n64.

But if this thing takes off, wouldn't the hardware limitations mean that it'll hold back the ambitions multiplatform titles on xb1 and ps4?

No, because most multiplatform titles won't release on Switch. Look at the Wii.

That is only speculation.

Of course, but the claim was that the controllers have a "single useful function." They don't, actually. IIRC there was already hinting from one source or another that other attachments would be in development. Honestly they can't not be, Mad Catz is already drooling.

The design looks like a prototype, but I think it has amazing potential to impress. A clean, premium finish will go a long way making the product attractive.

Well fair enough, maybe it just looks much bigger in the press shots than it actually is, or maybe I underestimate modern uber-children. It's a far cry from the Gameboy I grew up with.

In any case, my point remains that two separate mobile platforms doesn't make much sense to me unless they become homes for different markets, or unless they release a new DS that somehow can play scaled-down versions of Switch games.

Parents buy their kids tablets all the time...

Haven't posted here anything after the reveal, and now 13 hours or so later I'm finally calmed down so I'll go ahead and say it: This is exactly what I wanted this thing to be, but better because of how much they went down on the whole console experience on the go thing. The way it looks is futuristic and the matte thank YOU GOD that it wasn't reflective finger print trapping garbage like the Wii U. The way you slide the Joy Cons onto the sides of the thing, and then simply take it out of the dock to take it on the go with no other issues/steps is SO SATISFYING, especially the click noise. But in my opinions what's even cooler is how this thing is basically a mini TV you can take with you and use the little kick stand to sit up and play exactly like your at home. You can even use the improved pro controller (Which I might add, looks amazing) on the go if you choose to, as well as have other people join you on the same screen with the Joy Con controllers which I think are so cool. I can imagine so many situtations where I could just prop this up and start playing. Not to mention, holy crap if you told me last night that Bethesda was supporting this thing I would've laughed my butt off. And as for the reveal/marketing itself I think it is miles better than Wii U's trash revealing. You mean there's a trailer for a Nintendo system that isn't generic families playing Wii Sports and instead actually the demographic that plays the system. Speaking of which, did any one else notice this time there were ZERO Wii Sports esque crappy party games with motion control gimmicks, and only games shown off that actual Nintendo gamers would be interested in (Save the basketball thing). I know there wasn't really an in your face slogan for this reveal but I feel like the music and the constant Switch "clicking" noise and logo movement every time they SWITCHed to a different scene worked really well. That's another thing, the logo is so cool. It's like the yin yang type of thing and very simply shows the Joy Cons. The design of the system is surprisingly super CLEAN in my opinion. You think system with detactchable controllers and dock and immediately thing of something with a questionable make. In my opinion, the whole thing just looked so smooth. You firmly lock those controllers in and it IS a handheld. It also looks extremely satisfying to put it in the dock and take it out. All in all, so far I think this is FANTASTIC.

This was me responding to a dude making assumptions about power based on what was seen in the video. It was using his own argument against him, in case that wasn't apparent. Of course the video shouldn't be used for any substantial assessment as everyone else was telling the same dude.

You have nothing to worry about.

If the Switch provides a viable platform for games with more modest presentations and budgets but that are imaginative and innovative in other departments, I think it would be hugely beneficial to the industry. I don't think this console is meant to directly compete with XB1 and PS4, nor should it. Had Nintendo done a better job curating content on the Wii and making sure people continue to buy games for it, I feel like the industry would potentially be much more interesting today. Hopefully they can pull it off this time around.

I like the concept, not the design. Hopefully this is just a prototype.

I believe the logo is big just for promo pics.
I do hope the they refine the console design itself.

I hope they'll just focus on Switch and gradually stop support for WiiU (probably already gone) and 3DS.

I kind of feel you, there. I want something that will fit in my pocket if I'm getting a portable. And it does seem to be a big sacrifice in power.

I just can't see myself propping the tablet up in a public place and using the JoyCons when it's much simpler and less obtrusive to use a smaller dedicated handheld, or a phone.

You'll prop it up and deconstruct the controller if it helps you play better. Plus, you might get passerby lookieloos who'll be interested in what you're doing.

Eta- I'm just happy that smaller studios that don't have millions for graphics have a place to go to show their wares and publish their games.

Eta2- just got home and I'm playing around with the wiiu gamepad. I don't think the breaking off and using one piece as a controller will be difficult. It doesn't feel automatically natural, but it isn't a pain.

This is disappointing. I love MK8 but I'd rather have a new game with more new content.

And, also, yeah, Switch is more capable than the Wii U. Don't worry.

This sounds good though.

The more I look at that dpad, the more mad I get. You cannot throw fireballs consistently on this pad. Sliding your finger would cause bleeding.

Yeah, look at that console from 10 years ago that was a complete generation behind and lacked a lot of buttons necessary for parity as well as inviting necessary incorporation of motion controls! That's sure an indication of how things will go on this new console.
