I thought this comment was intresting, dont know if this thought has been discussed

IF the console has a touchscreen, the middle part of the JoyCon grip might actually be a touchpad that serves as a substitute for the touchscreen while the screen itself is in the cradle during TV play. Could even potentially use haptic feedback type technology the likes of which we've seen in Valve's Steam Controller. Just a thought :)"

Also Nintendo saying that they dont know if the grip will be included with the systems just yet and not talking about touch yet makes me think it might be the case, the grip might be more the just a holder for the joycons

So... um... how do you buy a new, complete JoyCon controller?

Except, it isn't a late port and will be the remastered version arriving at the same time as every other system's version.

It will?

I really hope the possibility of Nintendo releasing a SKU without the JoyCon grip doesn't actually happen, that would be the most moronic thing ever and would create all kinds of confusion.

I agree with this, as it would defeat the purpose of being able to play at home for most people. The Grip is almost as essential as the dock itself.

Some more investigative poking for you.

The - and + "buttons" on the removable pads are just latch release buttons, the gamepad that the removable pads slide out of at the start of the trailer most likely has a battery in the center portion to charge the controllers when in use, if that's true the system battery count is up to 4.

Yeah I remembered Shield also. The tablet part looks like it wasn't designed by Japanese engineers, let alone Nintendo (except for JoyCon part).
However Nintendo may have changed quite a bit after Iwata is gone so that might be the reason.

Yeah, and really, what's wrong with lesser visuals properly upscaled to HD on a big TV?

Makes me recall this thread. Of course portable-priced-development would look vastly better than the DS seen there, but it demonstrates the kind of difference you can get with just a resolution bump.

I would happily take this. I find the handheld games more interesting than the console stuff and if you told me you could play 3DS games like this I'd be on board.

that video is really effective and evocative of the wii preview video from 2005, except with more emphasis on games that actually exist. the song choice is fucking on point too so good job on whoever got that in there.

people have lived with tablets for half a decade so i kind of doubt that.

And yet everyone is wandering around with giant tablets.

I don't see people hauling around two tablets every where they go. They certainly aren't switching out an iPad and choosing to take a Nintendo tablet every where instead, especially when you know this will have a horrible os.

How can you play it as a home console without that grip? For what it's worth, every time they showcased it as a home console the grip is mostly present.

Also Nintendo saying that they dont know if the grip will be included with the systems just yet and not talking about touch yet makes me think it might be the case, the grip might be more the just a holder for the joycons

the problem with that is you would assume if thats the case the pro controller would have the same touch pad area, and there just doesnt seem to be anywhere on it that looks like it would apply

Yeah, I don't understand how that is even debatable. The system will be DOA if the grip is not included. It is crucial. The only things shown in the trailer that will be sold separately are the pro controller and the car hook thing

people took a 3ds and a smartphone around with them. i really don't see how this is really that different.

i don't think operating systems are on the forefront of the minds of consumers unless they're terribly slow. that said, you're kind of making things up right now.

So... um... how do you buy a new, complete JoyCon controller?

I'm pretty sure it will, but if it was just a cheap part it wouldnt even be a question, they prob still want to make sure pricing is right

Im pretty disappointed. Looks like theyre releasing a Nintendo branded Nvidia Shield, minus the PC gamestreaming? oh look, a last gen game was the sole non nintendo game they showed. That isnt foreshadowing their future third party support at all...

I'm pretty sure the NBA game wasnt a last gen port and not a new Kobe Bryant Court side by Nintendo

Exactly. I understand the Pro controller is optional and will be sold separately, but doing that to the grip would be flat out suicidal.

nintendo needs to start focusing big on the phone market. maybe they're doing that and just releasing this console to appeases their hardcore base? i don't see many other options here.

the buckets of money to be made with the cellular market is too big to pass up nintendo. forget this console business.

I don't believe anyone who says they're "disappointed" when this is to the letter what we expected and all the rumors said it would be.

I have the feeling the + and - are start and select just like the pro controller. Someone else pointed out small buttons on the back side of the joycon under the triggers which might actually be the latch release.

the problem with that is you would assume if thats the case the pro controller would have the same touch pad area, and there just doesnt seem to be anywhere on it that looks like it would apply

umm no, does the WiiU pro controller have touch screen? Nope, pro controller is suppose to not have those features

Thought of something with the SKU's. So, if two people in the same household want to buy Switches, does that mean that they'll have to get a useless extra dock? It seems like the dock has to come with the system based on the console name and marketing, but that seems like a problem that could arise.

These things fit in pockets. Tablets do not.
people keep talking about this but i can't think of anything more uncomfortable than having a 3ds in your pocket

if people want to use this as a portable device they will. ipads and kindles don't fit in pockets either and people take them everywhere

When I saw the first picture I was thinking It was a bad Idea, but the Video really sold me!. Never thought I would say that :)

The only concern is that this might be less powerfull then the Wii U, since its running on batterys.
Or does it have LOD that is used for battery use, and LODs for mains power use, so its not as taxing on cpu and gpu while portable?.

And Im a bit concerned about how well the gamepads sticks to the display after some wear.

But if its less then $299 I will buy it.

I don't see XL fitting in pocket, and that one is the most popular version lol.

And nowadays, people can just put the NS into some handbag lol. So i don't see the problem.

We will see how the market decides. I have a feeling this won't be successful, but I guess we can't say for sure until after it releases? The only interesting thing is if this consolidates Nintendo developers on one platform. Nothing else about it looks good to me as a home console player that sees no point in handhelds.

Nah, + and - are real buttons.

I don't know anyone that "carries" around non-smartphone tech in their pockets anymore. Those days are numbered. Switch is a great portable size for me.

iwata's plan was to use the mobile market to give people a taste of their franchises while the dedicated market would be the full versions that people would spend money on. the mobile games would in effect be advertising that they earn money on.

at least with pokemon go, the plan seems to be working - it raised awareness of the 3ds and their pokemon games. super mario run will be their next big test.

in addition they're expanding into other areas where people might see their brands - notably in film and at theme parks. they're using account systems to keep all of these ideas connected.

im also proposing that the joy con grip is the power source for the removable joy con controllers, that they are not self powered, so either they are tethered to the joy grip or the switch tablet, not able to use them without being connected to either one

Except, it isn't a late port and will be the remastered version arriving at the same time as every other system's version.

Isn't Skyrim Special Edition out this month on PS4 and XB1?

They're shown being used without either, on the plane.

Exactly. I understand the Pro controller is optional and will be sold separately, but doing that to the grip would be flat out suicidal.

I think it will be part of the package. That's the main control method and they show it at every chance they get so I doubt that it will be a separate purchase.

Nah, + and - are real buttons.
Those buttons are the ugliest part of the system. I wonder why they chose to make them like rubber cutouts in the shell instead of just circular buttons. The only thing I can think of is the reason for the triangle Start / rectangle Select button on DualShock: because they feel different from one another. The Pro Controller has them the normal way, though.

Woah what the hell, the video was at 6.4mil like 5min ago now it's at 7.1mil

This thing will be great for Nintendo and is coming out so soon too

Plug it into another Tv?

Or don't plug it in at all and just use it as a separate charger.

They showed two. You didn't watch, didn't you?

Did you not watch the video or something?

Watching that video again, I'm wondering what the price point is going to land at. With all the hardware involved I wouldn't be surprised at a $399 or higher point TBH. This seems more like a console/tablet than a handheld.

Did you not watch the video or something?

actually thats my fault, im going on like 3 hours of sleep in the last 48 hours, i know remember the people holding them independently like sideways wii controllers

for some reason it just wasnt clicking in my head that this thing will require 3 li-on rechargable batteries

The most exciting things about this console is that:

1) We won't need 'portable' versions of games like Killzone / Killzone on PSP. The best example would be a fully realised home/portable version of Pokemon.

2) That we don't have to buy different versions of virtual console games is a massive catalogue of games for Nintendo.

3) Massive port opportunities on the flip side like Skyrim: Enhanced (which already looks semi-confirmed). But imagine Overwatch on the train to work/uni. Shit son.

The dumbing down of games for portables will be gone once this is out which is a great step forward for Nintendo and the portable market. Best thing to come out in a long time.

im also proposing that the joy con grip is the power source for the removable joy con controllers, that they are not self powered, so either they are tethered to the joy grip or the switch tablet, not able to use them without being connected to either one

They showed it as separate wireless entities on portable mode. So each joycon is self powered.
