Coming from the PS4, I am blown away by the Xbox One.

I picked an Xbox One S up a couple of weeks ago when the FIFA bundles were £200 and I'm really happy with it for the most part. It looks great and the controller is excellent but I still prefer the PS4 UI. It's faster and I just prefer the aesthetics. I do miss the Share button on the Xbox controller as well.

I personally think the tiled interface of the Xbox One is a complete shit show. Ads, Ads everywhere, and I feel like Major Nelson as the poster child is a weird choice.

I don't pay too much attention to the number of ads on the various tabs, but just from memory I can't remember there being more than a single small tile per tab, if that, dedicated to an ad. The store tab is completely different, as it is meant to be a storefront, and to the person complaining about big releases having a dedicated tab on the home screen...it is the furthest right tab on the home screen, there is no obligation to scroll to it for any reason. If you're only turning the system on to play a game there would be one ad in the main home tab as far as I can remember and it is religated to the right side of the screen and smaller than all of your most recent game tiles.

People make it seem like there are pop up ads and adverts showing up when scrolling through friends list. An single unobtrusive ad that takes up a tiny fraction of your screen is really a deal breaker in a UI? How do any of you browse the web or use basically any free app on the mobile marketplaces? Shit, even Gaf has a banner ad, what terrible UI :/

OK, but that just restates the problem. And the items dont just move when there is a new app, its also whenever an up is updated, and sometimes (not sure if this is true) based on use.

And lets not make it seem folders have been around forever. The solved the moving item problem for games a few weeks ago. For 3 years they have moved every item around all the time, it sucked. Now they just move SOME of the items around all the time. Still sucks and inconsistent as well. Xbone isnt perfect, plenty of problems there. But in this case it beats PS4 hands down. Pin it there, it stays there.

I didn't say folders have been around forever, but the fact is that since we have had user made folders you have been able to put a bunch of games in there and choose their order and they stay there.

Anything on the main line still moves based on use, but I've never had Netflix or Amazon Video move from where they are currently or based on use, but then I also barely use them because my tv has the same apps so I rarely have to turn any console on to use them.

I respect your opinion but I couldn't disagree more. The UI is one reason I just sold my X1 it drove me nuts.

Yep exactly. When I got an X1 roughly 2 years after launch I couldn't believe how horrible the UI was and I couldn't belive that I hadn't come across more articles complaining about it. I was completely shocked. It was almost 2 years after launch. The 360 had a good UI. What happened?!?!?

I switched to the PS4 and never looked back.

Agreed OP. Personally I find the current version of the Xbox OS the best since the original blades setup on the 360. Ps4 UI is pretty great too although not as many options and things you can do with it. Cleaner look though.

Granted I think it has to do with internet connection as well, seems as there are quite a few people who say the OS is slow.

I feel like people complaining about ads being everywhere haven't actually touched an Xbox One.

I hated the way it was on the last 360 UI before the One came out. Ads everywhere for stuff that wasn't even related to gaming at all. Absolutely disgusting. The ads on the One though are not in your face or crowding the UI at all. I actually have more issues with the ads on Ps4 this gen, though both are not nearly as bad as on 360.

Glad to see the 'bone getting the love it (now) deserves.

Plugging a cable box into the One and using it with Kinect is a whole 'nother level of magic.

"Xbox, on." *TV and stereo turn on*

"Xbox, watch History Channel." *Xbox changes channel*

"Xbox, volume up." *Xbox increases volume*

Also great is snapping open a TV window so I can watch the news or a sporting event while playing a game.

And yeah, that controller.

I like the X1 UI, everything is easily accessibly. Love hope you're friend lost is always there and quick to navigate, it doesn't load. Also the achievement integration is flawless. What I don't like is that settings is still an app apart and takes like two seconds to open. They could fix it by giving shortcuts within the settings option. It is also show, sometimes it takes like four second to go home. I hope Scorpio to make it much faster.

I haven't used much my PS4 to compare the UI but I don't like that it needs to suspend apps to do multitasking.

I think they're both fine with room for improvement. The learning curve on the Xbox One is a little higher than PS4.

Never understood the sluggish thing. I can invite friends, start up party's etc way faster then on my PS4.

It may be based on internet speed. There was a thread not too long ago where people were posting video of their dashboard usage and for some it was instantly responsive and others there was significant lag between pressing a button and it responding.

I only use my XB1 about once a week, but every time I'm reminded how much slower, clunkier, and more unintuitive it is than PS4.

And what are the people who are saying the XB1 UI is much more feature rich than the PS4's talking about? I can't think of much at all that the Xbox One has that PS4 doesn't, and vice versa.

I really like the controller, although the dpad isn't as good as the DS4, and I don't like the bumpers at all.

Let me save everyone a long post full of hyperbole and skip straight to a faulty opinion.

Its actually true, at least the way I see it. From Xbox OS to Xbox App on mobile/PC. I am always amazed by how tightly and nicely everything is integrated.

My only complaint is I wish the UI felt a little faster and sometimes it stutters a little longer than usual, but most of the time even that isn't an issue and it hardly makes for a terrible experience. I love the controllers (both standard and elite) and wish I could use them for all other systems.

I actually the UI and dont think its as bad as people say it is but Microsoft definitely need to add some more hardware resources to it because it can be slow and clunky at times when your coming out of a game and want to check the store or something.

The PS4 does a lot of things well. I still have mine. But wow, this Xbox One console feels like another generation ahead of Sony when it comes to it's UI.

Must be a different Xbox One console to the one I have then, because if I've ever been blown away by anything there it's how slow and cluttered the OS is compared to the PS4. The length of time required for game installs in comparison is a complete joke.

I think the UI is my biggest complaint with the xbox one. I don't know how you like the store better. Been a while since I used it but they didn't have it very searchable or navigable at all. You basically had to use the system wide search to find what you were looking for if it wasn't on one of the main store pages.

But why didn't you mention the game install times/patching it does in comparison to PS4?

I'll be honest OP I had this exact experience but with the PS4 after I traded in my Xbox One to pick it up. This may be more a case of the new shiny glittery thing getting you excited more so than it actually being that much better. The controller thing I totally agree though, the DS4 is fine and all but there just really is no contest with the bone controller.

The first week I had the PS4 I was wow'd by games like Driveclub, Bloodborne and Infamous and just couldn't get over how polished the visuals were (as a pc gamer) I was also convinced that the PS4 was putting out a better looking visual signal in apps like netflix and hulu. That new console smell has worn off now however and everything is just kind of "meh". I would say give yourself some time to come down from the high.

Congrats on the purchase all the same! There are awesome titles on the platform for sure.

Weird. Totally the opposite for me, PS4 is on a different league when it comes to UI or usability.

yeah man... same... i go all out rage mode when i jump over to my XB1, everything feels slow, the layout is garbage, the sidebar is slow, everything i do feels like im constantly waiting for the console to catch up to me... i notice resolution decrease in games right away... its quite noticeable when you have both consoles.

What impresses me most? The attention to detail. It's quite apparent from the moment you boot the console up that the UI was designed, and refined, for gamers in mind. For instance, the option to view the bandwidth usage of your console and be able to see a history of that usage hour-by-hour. How many times have you felt a download was taking longer than usual? Whilst the PS4 shows you a progress bar of how much data has been downloaded thus far, the Xbox One allows you to monitor the actual speed (Mbits per second).

I can't understand the point of this feature? A history of bandwidth usage?

If I was looking for one thing to tell people what xbox is doing right, UI would definitely not be it.

Pretty funny, compared to last gen, when xbox UI was nicer.

Agreed. I literally gave up on the console waiting for days while the Master chief collection was trying to download and install. I think tomb raider tried to download and install and that also took freaking forever. The UI is so slow and clunky, i can't find anything in the store. I'm so glad i sold that console, wasn't playing it ever cause of the slow installation. I will stick to my gaming PC for most of microsofts titles, as most of there "exclusive" games are on PC or come to PC at some point.

I'm the opposite. I fucking hate the UI. And find the Ps4 to be much more slick and user friendly overall.

The Xbone is fine to have upstairs to play with friends but I definitely prefer the Ps4 this gen.

Worst UI of any console in the modern era.

...but the best controller of all time.

I am a satisfied Xbox One owner. The UI has evolved in funcionality, even if the overall performance seems to have taken a toll: it is not as fast as it should.

That said, I regularly play on PS4s from friends (biweekly FIFA tournaments, etc.), and I can´t stand its UI. It is considerably "snappier" than the Xbox One, but everything else feels like a downgrade.

When you see comments about 10 year olds having no issue but big grown men stumped, it makes you wonder if the ui is too difficult to come to terms with how are these people able to play games

I think most of it is people being comfortable with the way things were on 360 and it was easy to navigate. Things were logically placed.

Just takes a while to learn the new system but it is very different than 360 or ps4/ps3 and most people don't want to take time to just learn how to navigate a basic UI.

I agree with OP, I really like the NXOE UI as well. I never really understood the problem some people have with it. It's not as fast and minimal as PS4's UI, but whatever.

Easy to navigate, the shoulder-button content tabs make sense, pins are great for frequently used apps and games.

To each their own, of course.

Astroturfing thread?

We aren't allowed to express our opinions?

The last few 360 UI's were great. I even liked the metro-looking one that everyone hated. Everything was still right where you expected it to be, there was nothing to "learn." If I have to "learn" how to use a UI then that UI is poorly designed.

I actually really like the UI layout, too. I just hate the performance of the UI.

I think the store could use an overhaul, too.

The Xbox ui is thrash and slow

What's trash about it? ignoring speed since you said "and slow"?

People always say it's trash, confusing or hard to use but never actually give reasons as to why it's trash/confusing/hard or when they do it's ridiculous like "Can't find my games or apps" "can't find my disc tile" when it's literally right infront of you.

The dashboard however... is the worst screen in the world. Sorry it is not user friendly, the PS4 is boring as but easy to navigate (left or right to folder pick game), but this you have to go to top right of home screen but not too far right or you go to next page and not too far up or you go to top section.
What kind of complaint is this? Judging by the PS4 UI pics posted, you go too far right and you miss the folder with games aswell. Is it really the UI's problem if you press right too many times? Lol.

It's not about going to the "top right" that's just making it sound more complicated than it is, you're already at the top when you're at the dashboard, it's literally a case of going right once and pressing A to open MG&A. Or if you use pins (which you should be) then just press RT and you're right there.

How can people defend this terrible UI? Nothing about it makes sense lol how things are organized is a clusterfuck.

Controller is great though.

What ads? The PS Store stuff in the What's New section?

Those install times are not a generation ahead. The sluggish UI is not a generation ahead. The terrible organization is not a generation ahead. I avoid using my X1 because of these problems.
