Your personal scariest moment in horror films

So it's a bit easy to say what your favorite horror flicks are.

But what about singular scenes and moments? I have absolutely no idea what I'd say. It's tough. First one that comes to mind is the hospital scene in Exorcist... 3? Yep, not the original but the third, which is brilliant. I was watching it at around 4am for the first time, falling asleep (not because of the movie), then that... THAT part happened and it was like waking up from an epic panic attack.

probably that one scene in Event Horizon. prob cuz I was pretty damn young when I saw it in theaters.

don't really want to give me info cuz I don't want to give spoilers, although you prob should have already seen it by now

- Tunnel scene in Jacobs Ladder

- The scene in The Thing when they are exploring the other countries base

- Halloween 1 when Michael Myers rises up out of the bed in the background. Masterful shot

- Ending of the Blair Witch Project with the dude standing in the corner

- All the claustrophobic scenes in Alien

- The end of Rec.

Honestly? The one that comes immediately to mind is (The Ring)
the mom finding her dead disfigured daughter near the beginning of The Ring.
Maybe I should give it a little more thought but that is burned into my brain.

I have a couple:

Psycho-2.gif

"Jesus Wept"

Zelda in Pet Semetary when I was a kid

Sarah getting stuck in the small cave in The Descent. That scared me more than the rest of the movie.

And one of the GOAT jumpscares in horror history courtesy of TCM2.

Candyman 1 and the saying his name 3 times in the mirror.

I was 8 years old and my Aunt passed from breast cancer. Still young processing shit and to make me feel better my brother and cousins let me stay up to watch the first Candyman a few days later.

So I thought maybe I could bring her back. Nope, I could not sleep for weeks. Kept thinking she would come back for the wrong reasons. I could not even look in the mirror. Really messed up,

Weird how young minds process things sometimes.

I watched Ring (JP original) when I was young, much younger then I should have to be honest. So the
tv escape
scene near the end really effected me. Even now I find that film and scene in question to be very disturbing despite watching many horror films since then.

Jaws when the head pops out of the bottom of the boat.

Poltergeist tree, as had a tree just like it outside my window.

It's hard to choose one, but that scene in The Sentinel with the guy walking across the room.

So simple and so effective.

The end of Insidious 3 (yes, that scene: the one her and the dog looking at that "thing" in the dark). It definitely wasn't the scariest MOVIE, but I literally screamed at that part. It was probably the only time I movie made me scream, lol.

I saw the Dressed to Kill elevator scene as a child. The worst part was probably that I was caught watching it, so I was cut off from finding out wether the women helped the injured lady in the elevator or not.
Didn't even know the title of the film for the longest time, just watched it last year - unknowingly that it was it up until the scene itself.

Just saw it yesterday. I guess I know which scene you're referring to. But my biggest shocker was the flashback of Laurence Fishburne, just because of how loud and sudden it was. It was kind of cheap, yet it still got me.
- Ending of the Blair Witch Project with the dude standing in the corner
This one, too.

Loved Insidious 3. Probably the best of that series so far IMO though the first is good too.

The staircase scene in The Grudge. For some reason, creepy asian ghost girls with staccato movement freak me out.

- Halloween 1 when Michael Myers rises up out of the bed in the background. Masterful shot

Good choices.

The laughing scene from Evil Dead 2! After what Ash has gone through,
cutting his possessed girlfriend to pieces and his hand off
, everything in the room begins to laugh at him and he does so too.

So goddamn creepy.😲

I like the fade in of Meyers' face in the background when he first encounters Laurie. Love that shot.

Well, I came here to type this. Thanks for saving me the time.

When the old couple comes to pay a visit to the main character in Mulholland Drive. I felt like I was having a heart-attack...

Sinister - The home movie footage, specifically the lawn mower scene

Candyman - Final scene where the guy says Helens name in the mirror

Puppetmaster - The whole freaking movie, but I guess one particular scene with the leeches.

Forgot that one. I died watching this.

I also died watching INLAND EMPIRE when Laura Dern walks towards the camera. She's in the back, out of focus and just gets closer. I never thought to be that scared by a stupid shot like that.

This year:

Jump scare: "My House" in Conjuring 2.

Love that part. People accuse the Conjuring movies of relying on jump scares, but not really. Most of the jump scares in those are payoffs to already very long and creepy scenes that focus on atmosphere, excellent camera work and a sense of what's hiding in the dark. The jump scares are just a forte to the scene to move into the next.

There are also a lot of scenes without jump scares, like when Patrick Wilson has his back turned to Janet whom Wan puts out of focus and as the dialogue plays out, she slowly morphs into the old man before morphing back into Janet before the background comes back into focus. It's brilliant.

Also, lawn work from the first Sinister.

The home video segments of Sinister were the only things the movie had going for it IMO. Those were really great, everything else, not so much. And the music during those was really fucking weird which I love.

A link to all of them. Super disturbing.

Nurse Station, exorcist 3.

I got to experience this in a theater. Watching that scene on a big screen with surround sound and a bunch of other people screaming made for an awesome scare.

The scene at the end of Blair Witch Project in the house freaked me out too.

I'm pretty bad at 'getting scared' from moments I tend to be way too analytical and actually tend to just appreciate the scenes than be scared by them

There is something simply disturbing about the final Blair Witch Project shots. Sometimes all you need is a strange image and a cut to black and let your imagination take over.

Special mention to the Sinister videos. Don't really scare me, but I really appreciate then from a "short and effective scene" perspective. Like putting a punchy and scary short story in the middle of a larger work.
