which episode of arrested development had george michael turning on the tv and seeing like.. prisoners staring back from a hidden camera? was this a fever dream?

Why do I see this in some posts?

I screenshot it because it appears to be some emoji code and I have no idea what it will translate to if I paste the actual . Is it something that works on mobile but not desktops?
Apple icons. 👛🐦🐲☔️🌷🌭🍡🚵🏆

It was probably when his father was having video conferences with the lawyer at the house from prison. I think this is around the time they hired Bob Loblaw.

At work, I use multiple programs and files, such as excel and word files. I think I'm on XP (...) and whenever I have multiple files open of the same type, like two excels, if I open either one of them, the other one pops up below it even though it's been minimized. Is there a way to stop this from happening? It's SO annoying and I've never seen this behavior before. Same thing with word, folders (I think), Chrome, Explorer etc. but primarily the MS Office tools.

I would actually love to know if I can stop this too. I'm on Windows 8/10

I *think* this is down to which version of Office you are using. I went straight from an old copy of Office 2003 to Office 365 about 2 years ago and this stopped happening (which I found annoying, because I'd gotten used to it the other way round).

There are special sprays that you use with a clean cloth for that. There may be some special wipes, too.

Thank you!

Next question:

I use an Ethernet cable from my wifi router to my laptop. The connection seems to be just ok. Is it going to be any better if I run it directly from the modem to the laptop and skip the middleman?

how come the concept of having an educated opinion is seemingly outdated?

specifically talking about watching 30 mins of a 2 hour movie and saying "it sucked, it was bad, i don't need to see the rest to know that."

is there any thread about this phenomena? what should we call it, just intellectual laziness?

If your router is not great, yes.

I think the most general term for it is anti-intellectualism.

Just going off the price alone, it's probably not THE BEST. This kind of stuff you really get what you pay for but, on paper the numbers seem fine unless you've got a fiber connection or something (ethernet tops out at 12.5MB/s). I noticed on that page someone mentions it supports DD-WRT which is a really great custom firmware you could install on it to breathe new life into your router. If you're even a little technically minded I'd really recommend giving it a go, I don't remember the installation process being too bad. The router I had DD-WRT installed on a few years ago was the best thing I ever used, only stopped using it because my ISP gave me a new modem with a router built in. Doesn't have half the capabilities/features my old one did.

Edit: If you give it a shot, MAKE SURE you've got the right version of the firmware to install, double-check model number, revision version and all that of your router. There's a lot of variations and you've got to be certain you have the right versions of everything before you try to install.

Wow, thanks for the detailed reply Mr. Cookie Lion. It's much appreciated. No fiber connection; I'll see if plugging directly makes any difference beyond the placebo effect. I'll look at that firmware too for home use. Thanks again.

How does the i7 980x hold up today ?

Mobo is dead, and can't decide whether it's worth replacing it with another 1366 mobo, or going for something mid-range. Currently got 24GB DDR3, so I don't know whether that can still be used with today's mobos, and a GTX 580 3GB.

Using mainly for Photoshop/ video editing, and maybe gaming if I get a newer card.

By the way, did uprgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, kill anyone else's mobo ?

Is it possible to create websites (by coding html/css by myself) on something other than a laptop/desktop? Perhaps on a tablet or a smartphone somehow? I have an itch that needs to be scratched but I'm too far away from a regular computer most of the time :/

Yeah totally. I mean at the end of the day all you really need is a terminal. You could also use a plain text editor and Dropbox or an FTP sync app. You're not going to have a great time, but it's totally possible. There's also better options like Coda for iOS.

Is it still allowed to avatarquote? I haven't been on GAF for a while now and I was wondering if there where any rules that changed in the past 2 years. Dont want to get banned for something dumb

Also (didn't want to start a thread): say you've dropped water on your laptop 3 times this past year, and the keyboard (and the rest of your laptop seems to be okay), how big is the chance it will fail eventually from said liquid-spill?

totally asking for a friend

I see avatar quoting all the time.

No chance, I wager.

I'm looking for a live action video that featured Mario doing some neat stuff with some decent special effects. The highlight of which was a ground slam with an AOE afterwards. I've looked on youtube and asked the google, but clearly my searchfu isn't strong enough. Does anybody remember what I'm talking about and where I can find it?

I think I have a bad eating habit. Thanks to most jobs only providing 30 minute lunch breaks, depending on wether I bring my lunch or go out to eat, I devour my food like someone in boot camp. I do try to control how I eat but the food is just so delicious I'm just taking bite back to back. Is there a set # of times one should chew before swallowing?
I've heard 20-30 times is ideal but I get so bored of chewing and the food tastes bad at that point I just want to swallow it down.

Anyone have advice on this?

I have an LG 1080p LED monitor and I've noticed in the past few months that bright white screens are slightly fuzzy. It's hard to explain, but something isn't quite right when the background is white. Could this be a video setting or something?

edit: I fiddled with the gamma settings and that seems to have made it better

I just baked chicken in the oven. Should I remove it right away? Let it sit in the oven for a bit? What do I do?!?!

Depends. How was it cooked? If you leave it in the oven, it might become dry, depending how you cooked it. You could take it and wrap it in aluminium foil (and possibly put it back into oven but turn it off) if you aren't eating right away.

Either way, make sure it is well done.

My cat sat on my laptop and now the screen is vertical. This has never happened before and I have no clue how to fix. If someone can help me and explain it like I'm 5, I'd be very grateful.

To change your monitor's screen from horizontal to vertical, click the “Desktop” app on Windows 8's Start screen to launch the Desktop, and then right-click on any blank space on the screen. Click “Personalize” followed by “Display” and “Change Display Settings.”

I'm trying to figure out a way to download twitch.tv/lirik audio only vods onto my iPhone using only my iPhone and public wifi. Not sure if it's possible. Not having home internet anymore and a data limit on my phone is the pits.

I like to listen to twitch stream audio as a podcast.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Seems gaf has a new favorite word, I see it aaaaall the time: echo chamber. Why is that?! It's in every thread it seems.

Closet racists claim supporting equality is intolerance toward their hate and that GAF is echo chamber because of that.

If we ignore those people, GAF is about anything but echo chamber. Can't recall many things where people agree, be it games, films, books, music, politics, economics, etc.

Now, 4chan /pol/ is a good example of an echo chamber.
Or Reddit's /the_donald.

Crazy people. I'll have to look up the definition I think, I just thought it was fascinating that all of a sudden, so many people have found the term and have started using it. It's like the term is en vogue at the moment, i wonder where it originated from on this site.

I've been seeing it on this site for years. It just happened to pop up recently because a pretty big one was broken wide open because of the election.

I need to know the name of a very famous pop song, probably from the 90s, where the singer goes "you're a perfect stranger"or something like that.

It's really famous and it sound like Silverchair or something like that and it's driving me NUTS!!!

Please help, GAF!

firefox 50 has whitewashed half the space on the top. This is pretty annoying with personas, is there a way to make it uniform again?

I've always wondering about props in movies/TV shows in the form of important documents (memos, briefs, newspaper clippings, etc.). Often, when the camera zooms in on a document, a word, sentence, or paragraph pertinent to the narrative of the movie or show is the focal point of the shot. My question is: what about everything else in the document? Do the people making the movie generally create an entire fleshed out document even though probably only a part of it will ever be filmed, or do they just fill it with mumbo-jumbo (save the relevant part) and hope no one will be able to discern what it says? For example, if in a horror movie about a girl who is murdered in the woods, the lead investigator of her death pulls a newspaper clipping about a similar death that happened a year ago as part of his/her investigation, do the writers (or whoever's in charge of this) create a fully fleshed out, detailed fake newspaper article explaining this previous murder, or just a few sentences relevant to the story?

What about documents just, say, lying on a desk that have text visible on them but that the camera doesn't focus on at all? Do these props generally have pertinent, realistic information/formatting on them, or are they just random documents with gibberish written on them? For example, if there's a scene in a lawyer's office in which affidavits regarding witnesses in a trial are visible on his/her desk, would these affidavits, upon close examination, actually be written and formatted correctly, with the relevant facts of the movie included?

Obviously, a lot of this probably depends on directorial style, with some directors having a reputation for attention to detail, but I'm wondering if there is a general rule of thumb or MO when it comes to this sort of thing.

Sorry if this is a confusing question, but I've just always honestly been fascinated by this, and I'm watching through The Wire for the first time, which is fairly document-heavy and has renewed my curiosity.

TLDR: what is generally written on prop documents in movies/TV shows, when the bulk or entirety of the text of these documents is not displayed to the viewer?

Dumb question: Are there different kinds of telephone wires?? I bought a longer wire so I could put my modem/router in a better spot but it doesn't work. The packaging says something about number of pins and VOICE so I dunno.
