Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

Did it beat knack in the end?

I still remember with horror the knack has outsold Mario 3d world threads and all the people rejoicing. This changed forever the way I see GAF
I remember that thread all too well, that was 9only relevent for like a month however

It's time to accept that Retro is the DKC dev going forward. They won't work on anything else until the series stops selling.

Which also means that Nintendo still doesn't care about appealing to western gamers. sigh

Tropical Freeze was not so hot

nothing to do with the Western

Screw all the haters Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze was one of the best platformers I have ever played.

If we get more than that then I am not complaining because we are gonna get a quality game. Plus if Retro wants to make a Donkey Kong game or whatever they want so be it. I just want to play quality games.

Practically every Metroid game actually has sold over a million...with a few outliers, those being:

Zero Mission
Other M
Federation Force

(i'm not counting pinball because who cares)

OM and FF are understandable but it's a shame ZM didn't do very well.

Didnt Other M hit a million WW after being heavily discounted

I dont think Nintendo is gonna pass on making a new Metroid becouse it cost more then making a new DK like one poster said.

Metroid is one of their major franchises as far as being around a long time, new IP yea they might not want to spend a lot on it but not Metroid.

Nintendo didnt care about spending a lot on making Xenoblade X, and getting the rights to Bayo 2 and The Wonderful 101. Nintendo knows hardcore games cost more, and they are fine with spending more to get them made on their systems, if WiiU didnt bomb it would have had a Metroid game. Miyamoto said a few years ago they had ideas for Metroid for console and handheld, I wouldnt be shocked if they applied both to the Switch Metroid game. Tanabe also said next metroid game would be on the next system, people assumed he only meant if they just started on it at that time, of course he wasnt gonna say it was in development, I bet the game was well in development when FF was announced.

I expect to see a proper Metroid Jan 12th, FF kept the Prime name for a reason

Barely any Wii U games were hot. Put Tropical Freeze on anything but the Wii U and it would have sold better.

Retro should just make whatever they want. Most of the Prime team left and worked on Recore, anyway. Not saying that couldn't make a new Metroid, but I doubt it'd be the same.

Pretty sure Tanabe said those were his intentions with Federation Force; to expand the Metroid Universe.

Who knew he would miserably fail in the process?

..oh wait

Yea they didnt know the game would get hated on like it did, but the reason people didnt like it was cuz it wasnt a proper Metroid game, thats not gonna stop them from making the next mainline Metroid game because people cried about wanting a real Metroid game istead of FF. Like I said I bet Metroid Prime 4 is in full development at Retro and has been for sometime.

There's really no reason to say this with such certainty. Also, while it's not as western-oriented as Metroid, DKC still mostly appeals to western gamers.

Why people are ok with other teams making only one serie but not with Retro making two DK?

Metroid fans don't deserve Metroid

Its because Retro is Nintendo's only real western studio, they should have them making games more western, the Prime games were graphically very impressive on the GC. Then they go to make a 2D platformer when Nintendo has a bunch of studios that can make those.

DKCR games were good, but it was over kill on the platformers, WiiU their first HD console, it a shame we have yet to get a HD Metroid game.

I just think it's because to most people, at least on GAF, Donkey Kong Country is just another kiddy platfomer with stupid monkeys in it I suppose.

Something like Metroid appeals alot more to their tastes.

Just like how Snake in Brawl lead us to MGS4 on Wii, right? lol

I kinda don't see XV on Switch due to how large that game seems to be.

The size of the game shouldn't matter, imo. Switch could play BoW and that Zelda game looks massive enough just based on the small shit they've shown.

It'll definitely look less attractive than the PS4 version, however.

Well said. Nothing wrong with DKCR (far from it), but it is the opportunity cost of them doing it. If not Metroid fine, but I would love something with a new IP or anything not a 2D platformer...

This meeting will be really interesting. We will go from the info we have now to everything and presumably. E able to preorder immediately. Full functionality, game lineup, hands on impressions, and of course price.

I kinda don't see XV on Switch due to how large that game seems to be.

It's not even the size, just generally the game is too demanding and the engine is a mess. They can barely get it to run at 900p/1080p on Xbox One and PS4 at a consistent 30fps. I just don't feel a port is worth the effort for Switch.

FFVII R would make more sense, but even then, the game looks incredibly graphically demanding. Really interested to see the specs in January.

Xenoblade HD on Switch would be a megaton for me personally.

If it were a full remaster then yeah I could get excited about it, though ideally they'd be farming out the job rather than taking it on themselves similar to Xenoblade 3DS.

Bionis and Mechonis realized with nextgen-ish graphics would be stunning.

I don't see a need for in-fighting with this blaming the fans stuff. People just wanna see games that appeal to them.

Plus it's not only Metroid fans, I've only played MP3 and thought it was mediocre while DKCTF was great. I'd like to see them work on something new though, and DKCTF kinda disappointed me with it's presentation. It wasn't what I envisioned when I thought of Retro's first HD title.

XV isn't a super impressive technical showcase, it just struggled due to its engine.
I think the engine is what makes it less likely to show up on Switch. Having to spend month porting the engine and optimizing it while working on DLC doesn't sound like a good time.

Yeah seems like more trouble than it's worth for them. Maybe another Crisis Core: FFVII type game would be cool. I could get with it.

If Nintendo did partner with Unreal to get Unreal 4 on the Switch, I see FF7R being a possibility

I have no doubt Unreal 4 will be compatible with Switch. DQXI is coming after all. But from what we've seen it's less graphically demanding than FF7R. That said, I fully expect stuff like Ni no Kuni 2 and World of Final Fantasy to come to the system. It'll could also prove lucrative for extra Tales game sales as well.

Two directors, one lead, and a couple others does not = most.

People want variety out of Nintendo. DKC:TF, as great as it is, was announced and came out when people were sick and tired of Nintendo releasing 2D Platformers, especially on Wii U.

Is the reason hope or something worth paying attention to?

Of course it is not hope. I wish for once there would be as smooth a development process as possible for them. I'm positive about the fact that we haven't heard of any significant departures after Tropical Freeze like we had with their past two games.

Concerning Tanabe, it's a reason that is speculation on my own part, based on something a Nintendo employee said in a message to me. Let's just say sometimes developers or publishers or other employees in the know get a little reactionary sometimes when they read message boards (see my tag for an example). I'm being purposely vague because I don't want to throw anyone under the bus. I do not have any insider connections or info, it's just speculation based on a comment that was personally made to me.

On one hand they need to sell about 10 million copies to break even on the game and a portable version would certainly at least sell big in Japan.

On the other, I get the impression Square wants nothing more to do with Luminous after this game, so they may not see it worthwhile to port.

You know, a Xenoblade game will be on the Switch. And that will be a true open world.

XV won't be on the Switch because of its engine.

I think the overall software output will be insane. I won't be surprise if we end up with 10 Nintendo 1st party games until the end of the year. Here is what I expect to be shown at the event:

-Zelda: Breath of the Wild
-3D Mario
-Mario Kart 1.5
-Splatoon 1.5
-Super Smash Bros + DLC
-Super Mario Maker
-Pikmin 4
-Retro Game (It's been a long time since Tropical Freeze)
-Pokken + DLC
-Pokemon Sun & Moon Port

What's even more crazy is the fact this lineup is expected and not far fetched at all, considering the information we have until the moment.

Just to clarify, when I said "large" I didn't just mean FFXV's open world nature, I also meant the other stuff all of you mentioned like its engine, graphics, etc. Should of been a bit more clear.

I really do wonder how much money Square-Enix burned just trying to make that game. It was announced over 10 years ago and just now it's gone gold.

I used Nintendo's previous two Nintendo Direct presentations for 3DS and Wii U launch and discuss potential launch dates for Switch in March. If anyone wants to listen: Link.

Does anybody believe there is a Luigi's Mansion 3 coming?

There was the rumor NLG had a Wii U game in the works and it was moved to the Switch. I know FF just released not too long ago. This would mean they were making both simultaneously.

Generally agree. Laughing to myself at a version of Super Mario Kart 1.5 with SNES graphics and all the Mario Kart 8 bells and whistles.

More importantly, I can't believe I actually had the thought "maybe they should hold some of that to the next year" - the droughts have been too real...

There's been a lot of smoke regarding a potential LM3, from what I recall

I think that we will be pleasantly surprised by the launch output for the Switch. The Wii and Wii U launches were so abysmal, Nintendo must know they need to come out strong for what is basically their company reboot.

I mean, it's been 3 years since 3D World, so it is not a stretch to think that the new mario will be a launch game. That right there would solidify the switch as a Day 1 purchase for many.

That's definitely not what you should be expecting. Pikmin 4 and Pokemon Sun / Moon are forum rumors more than anything. You should be expecting something from the Nintendo Land / Wii Play team though.

Edited to fit my thoughts, since you weren't far off from what I was thinking.

...was the Wii launch "abysmal"? It was a smash success with games like Twilight Princess and especially Wii Sports.

Excite Trucks was cool too.

The Will unveil and Wii launch knocked it out of the park. Both were the exact opposite of the Wii U.

Well I mean just in terms of games, it was bad. It was definitely propped up by the central gimmick and wii sports, but I think it was still universally considered a mediocre launch lineup.
