Star Citizen Alpha 2.0 | The 'Verse Awakens

Of course it is. It is baked into the heightmap and blended on boundaries.

One thing to bear in mind is that the planets aren't dependent on just the heightmaps for terrain. If they so desire they can make bespoke large objects and blend them into the terrain. Obviously it wouldn't be systemic but in locations of interest there are ways around it.

That's the thing, I want the areas outside of those handcrafted bits to be believable which is where horizontal displacement would come in. I'm more interested in the effect on a macro-scale when it comes to CIG's planets (well, mini-planets). Elite might get away with its heightmap-only approach because its target hardware consists of toasters but I'd like to think CIG can aim a bit higher than that.

With everything turned down, sure. Pump up the options and it can tax a high end rig. Or run it in VR mode and watch the system cry for mercy.

Sure. But I'm thinking that they'll find a solution. They're currently prototyping a planet like ArcCorp which is entirely composed of cities. The buildings obviously won't get away with a heightmap process.

ArcCorp is going to look freaking weird from space. No land, just metal fabrications everywhere. Going to need some copious LoDing there. Or perhaps there'll be so much smog that you can't see the buildings at all from above - obvlivating the need for it. =P

It sure does represent a pretty intense technical challenge to make it look right and LOD correctly and smoothly. I really wonder how they will handle it.

It also makes me wonder how they will handle lights in the cities themselves LODing in. Perhaps something like what Just Cause does.

I didn't even think about having artificial lights covering every square foot of the surface. In a way ArcCorp is going to be more impressive to see implemented than a normal planet with the diverse biomes. Heck, I don't even want to think about how they'd handle the traffic that the planet would have... everywhere. Perhaps ArcCorp will be off limits except for a scripted entry/touchdown.

On the topic of lights, ArcCorp is going to be a damn disco ball in space.

I see, well I don't think ArcCorp changed much. But Universe did a little, they added the pirate station Grim Hex with 2.5 in august, with new suits. Changed the automatic landing system. And added a couple of ships I think.

lol, something changed with the email tag hiding method and the URLs were getting shown (due to getting converted to URL tags now I guess). Fixed by taking off the http prefix.

Thanks. I didn't know they added the FPS portion of the game already.

And I meant Port Olisar and Arccorp as the two areas.

I'm not sure if you're referring to Star Marine (which is the FPS gameplay version of Arena commander, although it isn't in yet) but hasn't the FPS gameplay been there since Crusader/Port Olisar was first added over a year ago?

Finally some SQ42 footage.

Small sale up right now on Super Hornets. Can save a little bit of money for anyone interested. https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/15588-Super-Hornet-Super-Sale

I did some melting and use of buybacks to save myself $40 in preparation for the end of the month Anniversary sale. (finally will get that Starliner I missed out on)

How did you save $40? The package/ship savings are only $20, and not LTI. You could save $10 by using a CCU from a donor hull and turning an existing SH into a donor for a more expensive ship, but that's a far cry from $40.

I did by using 4 x $10 off CCU's :)

I currently have lots and lots of CCUs and LTI tokens in my hangar as well as in my buyback section. All of my current ships, 18 of them, have LTI including 2 game packs. 1 game pack for an AI bot only has 2 years on it.

Strange new sales with 20% reduction in prices.

Are the rumors true and CIG are desperate for money?

The game still seems really far from being complete.

I play the game just about daily and it simply doesn't have high graphical production values.

Seeing is believing and all that, but at the very least the terrain looks believable enough in those new screens.

Whether you think the graphics are great or suck is independent of the hardware requirements. Low end PCs can't run Elite without looking like absolute ass, especially in VR.

I give up, I'm not even sure what your point is any more. Any game can be demanding in VR or really high resolutions, doesn't mean they look great or are pushing any technical extremes.

My point was Elite isn't exactly a game made to optimally run on low spec PCs (toasters). Sure it has lower min requirements than SC, but a fair amount of that is due to Elite having good scaling.

Star Citizen has virtually nothing on that end. You've got resolution and a few presets that have a comparatively minor effect on the graphics. SC, being in an alpha state, also has room for optimization. I fully expect the final game to be less demanding than it is now and run on middle ground gaming PCs. It'll take a hit to the looks department to get there, but Elite looks like shit with the options dialed down too, so *shrugs*.

I'm looking to get the Starliner too. Something about playing pilot in the verse appeals to me. Then again I want an Endeavour too so I can complete my explorer fleet. If 3.0 releases this year I may get both (are you listening CIG?!? :))

lol, I was reading the left ship as being in the background and couldn't remember anything having such huge engines.

The configuration certainly wouldn't look the same, but the Hull E has some massive round engines. Ones that'd look about that big if they were in the background.
