Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

No, it's the Arcade Archives release of the original Darius.

Oh... I didn't understood anything yet.

Errrr, if my memories serves right, the orignal Darius is... Not that great actually... And without the whole "triple screen stuff" i would argue the game is being wasted to be played that way.

I've always loved the original Darius. Arguably the best in the series.

I was hoping that this was a release date for the upcoming DLC. This 30th anniversary OG game and music collection is pretty cool, but I don't own a PS4.

T-The best ? Well i obviously disagree since i found it somewhat boring (and the fact i consider G Darius to be one of my favorite game of all time doesn't help) but i would be very curious to know why you think that way. Maybe i was too harsh with it ?

This one is the first release to have the "triple screen stuff." Pretty much a perfect release, officially.

I only see one screen there. With the biggest black border of history in order to put those three screen in one.... So yeah no, i understand what you mean but it's not enough for me. I think right now, the only way to "somewhat" play those game at hope is on MAME

... Well, at least that's what i thought until my travel to Japan where i was lucky enough to play Darius II on a real arcade cabinet...

It was incredible, i mean i don't even like Darius II (like the first one, i find it quite boring) but oh boy that experience was incredible ! It's not only having two screens (yeah it was only two) wich seemed seamless, no, it was a cabin with sound coming from behind with the incredible OST... And even where we sit seemed to vibrate !

So yeah, since then, i think not even Mame with two screen don't do the game justice... I just think Darius I & II don't really work as console game because of that, there is other Darius games which are better suited for that in my humble opinion.

Well, use a bigger screen then. The actual frame is rather arbitrary. The three screens are there like mame. The port also lets you adjust the three screens independently if you are into the seams and different color balances from the middle screen being reflected. But if it is not your thing then so be it. It will be hard to mimic the Hey setup at home but this port of the first comes close.

Still the best Darius.

Just curious what most people set ups are like... are you using a pad or arcade stick?

This is my setup. I switch between stick or pad depending on if I want to recline or not or sit in my couch.

"GAME IS OVER"

Deltazeal cleared, that last area though. I'd say the "kitchen sink" is impossible, if you don't have 4-5 bombs saved up or the special weapon fully charged. Else, it's a wicked game.

You 1cc it? Congrats! Now off to XIIZeal
It wasn't a 1cc clear. I had a bit of trouble to "crack" a certain "point" in the final stage. Luckily the normal clear unlocked score attack for said problem stage, which is always helpful for getting more competent. Well, I might as well try for 1cc now.

I just found a steam card and have a few bucks for one game.

Eschatos or Raiden IV?

Looking for replay value, fun and just once an alternative to bullet hell/cave style shooters. I don't know both games but I hear they are pretty good!

Eschatos looks a bit ugly but also has something fresh about it while Raiden is more up my alley from an aesthetical standpoint. That one looks kinda stiff from the videos I've seen, though. Hmmmm. Eschatos it is.

Rayge, what joystick and monitor do you use for your setup?

I have a Giant Sword stick using Sanwa parts at the moment. I also have a HRAP and Shadaloo stick. I probably use them all about the same amount. They all have different internals. I don't suggest going with the Giant Sword. It's pretty expensive. The HRAP feels great and it's my go to for going places. The Shadaloo VEWLIX is a solid my oldest custom case too and it has a PS360+ in it. The Giant Sword has the Brooks PCB in it. It is hands down the best PCB you can get. I love it. Easy to install and easy to update firmware. I have some other cases, but these 3 are my go to. The others are retired in storage.

The monitor is a ROG Swift and it's been pretty damn good to me. No issues and the high refresh rates are fantastic for shoot'em ups that allow framerates higher than 60 like Sky Force Anniversary and Drifting Lands.

I played the hell out of Darius in the arcades when it was first released. I really enjoyed the challenge, the music, and one aspect that I think (I could be wrong) that was only on the first one was the choice of paths happened seamlessly and without breaking up the action for a menu choice. If you were in the middle of the screen when the divider came, you died.

I played Darius Burst using the PSVR and it was a cool experience, the Arcade Archives version of the first game could be cool that way as well.

Eschatos works really well in motion, believe me. It also has some of the most chilling and beautiful moments I've ever seen in the whole genre. The OST is kickass too!

If you can buy the bundle with Judgement Silversword and Cardinal Sins, I can't speak for the latter since I haven't played it thoroughly yet but JSS is like the grandparents of Eschatos and it FUCKING RULES.

Hey, I really like the rustic shelves you have there! <3

I played it for a while. :) At first it felt really strange because everything is so....in your face – compared to the bullet-spewing but relaxed enemies in Cave shooters at least. After a few tries I realized that using the different skills is totally essential. Then I tried advanced mode and boy, this is where the fun begins, right? :) That bullet-sucking mechanic of the shield is awesome.

I still need to get into the groove and not think about the different mechanics so much but so far it's cool! I like how you unlock things by playing. Is there a pattern to how you actually unlock stuff or is it random?

The graphical style will grow on me because there's definitely creativity there.

Welp, just spent way too much money on a copy of Mars Matrix for my newly acquired Dreamcast.

I've gone too far down this SHMUP rabbit hole guys, and there's no coming back.

I browsed a few of the newest pages, i'm feeling on the edge about buying a fight stick for shmups and other arcade games, anybody got any recommendations on what to get? I would be willing to spend 200-300€ on it since i know coming from flight sims that a bad stick makes the game feel bad.

Noob question incoming.

I browsed the shmups forum to learn a bit more about the genre. A mistake bcause - wow - what a vile and poison spitting community this is! I'll gladly stick to this thread here for future community needs.

Can someone summarize for me what the existing problems with the steam ports of DDP:R and Mushihimesama are supposed to be? Some people at the shmup forums are absolutely radical about it while I enjoy these games so much.

What game modes are NOT affected by seemingly game destroying issues? I had no problems with ddpr 1.5 and regular black label mode so far but I certainly don't know how the original games are supposed to play like. Same with Mushihimesama where I play mostly normal, arrange and 1.5. Best shooters I played, they really elevated my opinion of the genre in the short time I own them.

I understand that fans want the best ports possible and hope that stuff gets fixed in the future but I wonder how bad it really is.

Yeah man I just lurk there to see if there is any news there are people here who defend that place, but it's filled with condescending elitists. There are a few folks there who are helpful, but don't expect your questions to not receive snide remarks from some of the posters there. I really hope that the Shmup scene moves forward and away fromy old ports so people can stop with this arcade authenticity crap. Trying to emulate archaic architecture on today's machines is unbearably hard. Makes me sad that you have people attack developers because of this.

Even if new games are released they will probably whine about how things aren't the same as they used to be and all that elitist jazz.

As for the ports I think Black Label Arrange and Arrange A have slowdown issues. If you've never played the originals like me then it's a non issue. I would rather CAVES brush things up a little more and just move on to the next thing.

Here is the thread Degica is tracking issues on Steam.

As far as I know beyond slowdown issues there are no more major mode issues, like the invincible boss, whatever that was about. I don't know if there are any more crash bugs hanging around since I never experienced any of them. I think they got them all? I know the friends one was fixed.

Ketsuipachi mode is pretty much not playable for any sort of competitive/serious score chasing, but is ok for casual play depending on how much it bothers you. Degica did comment on it in the last patch saying they are very aware and are doing what they can but it sounds like it is not so straightforward.

This might be a way long shot but I figured I would ask: does anyone have R-Type III on super famicom and can check the pcb? I'm trying to verify a copy I picked up is legit. Thanks.

Honestly I didn't noticed big issues, only small slowdowns (drop from 60 to 59/58 fps) in both games buy only in few sectors with A LOT of enemies on screen. I play on Intel HD graphics so maybe some of the other issues are related to Nvidia/AMD drivers, I don't know.
I'd say that these are good ports and Degica is working hard with its patches.

I simply don't I understand the hate coming from Shmup11 forum, huh. :/

what about blue revolver, mecha ritz (one of the best official releases this year - what'd you think?), crimzon clover throughout the years, etc? or did you just ignore those posts?

Ports are fine. Just play them and enjoy them. Stay away from shmups forum for any questions. Good to browse for occasional topics though. Most folks here are far nicer and the most you might get scolded for is for playing with continues here. That said play how you like with what you like. Continue or use easier modes to play. Enjoy the genre.

I'm talking more along the lines of established companies. Those developers don't have a catalog of games to look back on and nit pick. I was more referring to if CAVE were to move ahead and develop something new. Which I wish they would so that people would stop trying to compare their ports. It would just be nice for them to have a new game come out and have the game get judged on its actual mechanics and gameplay rather than how perfect the slow down is matched up to from old pieces of hardware.

Surely play how you like, but the more serious fans of the genre will be serious about comparing scores and such. The lack of faithful reproduction of the original games breaks this aspect of the genre. Slowdown or lack thereof has a large impact on difficulty.

Not directing at you in particular, but was meaning to post something along these lines and this is as good a place as any.
