No early voting is such bullshit. I'm in NY and in a suburban area so I didn't have a line and my vote doesn't 'matter' a whole lot, but the fact that I had to take time out of a specific work day to vote is dumb. There should be at least 2 weeks before election day where we can vote. The mail in ballot system of Oregon (or Washington?) is the best model and I wish we just did that nationally. You'd have such higher turn out and so many less problems.

Yeah I agree. I guess I'm not sure how early voting works in all states, but what we have here in Iowa seems to work pretty well. Early voting opens like a month before election day and stays open until the day before. There a fewer early voting locations compared to election day locations, but you have much more time to make it work. You can also vote by mail (absentee ballot) and don't need an excuse to get one like in some states. I think the more options the better.

Clinton seems better than Trump, but I don't think we will see an improvement here. There has been no public debate over foreign policy this election cycle. With no push-back, what reason is there to change or take a step back and examine the USA's role in foreign wars.

This probably isn't what people want to hear, but the no fly zone is a bluff. Voters want a candidate who promises to do something, and a no-fly zone sounds like the sort of safe something they want. It'll never actually happen because she knows the risk.

I fear you're wrong though; the US position in Syria is orders of magnitude more complex than Russia's, but I fear she'll be reluctant to disengage from the conflict if it means ceding influence in the region to Russia.

His stance on NATO baffles me. It's one thing to tell the other members that they need to carry more of the load so that we could lower our defense spending, but Trump wants to increase defense spending.

It seems like he's trying to appeal to the isolationists while also keeping the MIC appeased. Makes for strange bedfellows.

In the end I couldn't pull the trigger on Trump. While he's someone who I really wanted to vote for on an emotional level, you have to realize that he simply isn't a true believer, just another GOP snake oil salesman, only more bombastic and less intelligent. I am glad he ran, and I hope his movement continues to grow and eventually pushes the Grover Norquist chamber of commerce types out of the party. This time it was free trade, in four years it might be regressive taxation, or lax financial regulation, or labor rights. When the day comes that the base fully awakens and forces the party to move beyond trickle down and hostility to labor, I’ll be ready to support them, but until then I’ll continue to begrudgingly vote for Democrats.

I can see some benefits of a Republican Presidency/Senate/House in many election years, but man, you made the right choice this year. It takes a lot of inner strength to change one's mind like you did, so you should be very proud of yourself. Most of us (us being humanity) like to dig in so deep that we never will listen to the other side's opinions, so it's impressive when someone overcomes that tendency.

No. The two parties are very diverse coalitions. Hell, we had two complete party outsiders do exceptionally well this year (Trump and Sanders). The 12th Amendment says that to win outright a candidate has to win over 50% of the electors. Until you amend the constitution, sustainable and stable 3rd parties are impossible in America.

Government is always about coalitions. In some governments the coalitions form after elections. In America the coalitions form well before the elections. So if you just walk in on election day, it is going to seem like there are only two choices, but we had a long process to create those options. That process is something that is necessitated by the Constitution.

I'm also in Virginia Beach. Had no issues in the Courthouse area, in and out in 5 minutes, but my friend's location near Providence was temporarily shut down due to the police having to come in and arrest a dude wearing a "My gun and I are voting Trump" shirt who was threatening people in line.

That's awesome, it's a really cool area but it's also really conservative because of all of the military and DoD spending here.

I used to live down there some years back and I know what you mean. Lot of Republicans down unfortunately.

There's still some good people though, so who knows. Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised. I know a few diehard Republican friends who had some serious crisis of conscience over Trump and completely change into Hillary supporters because of this election.

Yep. There can be supporters with signs or whatever outside the polling place (so long as they stay some distance away from the entrance as defined by law) but the workers inside should have absolutely no campaign gear on them. Your state's Secretary of State office should have some way of reporting irregularities like that, or independent civil rights orgs you can contact if you don't trust your state government.
