Outdated laws in some states prohibit taking pics of ballots (specifically, selfies with ballots). No one gets in trouble though, IIRC.

I don't think it nullifies your vote but it is illegal in a number of states including New York. You can face fines and/or jail time for doing so.
It's not outdated. It's a perfectly legitimate law that discourages vote buying.

I have a lot to learn and I'm frankly absolutely confused and filled with self doubt in my life right now to the point of being in deep depression about it. I'm simply watching and trying to learn from it. I think it's okay to not know where you are as an individual and just watch. I don't know what to think of it all. It's a confusing mess and it troubles me.
It doesn't help that I have a lot less "liberal" views than almost everyone here, so it's hard to express myself and have a calm discussion. I have never let myself be exposed to so much liberal conversation before and I'm having a hard time processing it all, especially because I grew up in an ultra conservative demographic. My own poor education on politics/government hasn't helped either.

I would think that's a good law. If it isn't prohibited, someone could be coerced (or even just pressured) into voting and then taking a picture of it to prove it.
Obviously they could still do it 'illegally' but it reduces the risk anyway.

You're not supposed to do it, to provide blanket cover to avoid blackmailing or bribing people to vote.
However, I dunno about "invalidating"...one you put your ballot in the machine, it's in there and it ain't coming back out again.
