It's all preliminary right now, even for states that have been called. The percentage needed before a state is called depends on whether a state heavily favors one party or the other, or if it is a close race.

For example, California is deep blue so it'll get called for Clinton with a small percentage of precincts reporting, while Oklahoma is guaranteed to go Republican so it'll be called right away. States that are closer (Florida, etc) will not be called until most precincts have reported totals.

Of course, when we talk about states being "called", it's just estimates from networks based on how current results from reporting precincts compare to expectations. It's not official for each state until all precincts report totals.

Ah okay, I figured it was something along those lines.

Out of interest, why do they bother calling it at all? What difference does it make until the final count is done? Why not have the results pour in from final counts only?

No matter the outcome of tonight, it's proving what minorities, women, and the LGBT community has been saying about America for generations, "They don't really care about us."

Hillary will more than likely win, but fuck if this doesn't put a sour taste in my mouth. It should never have been a close race. Donald Trump is a deplorable human being, and it truly saddens me that he has amassed such a fervent, hateful following. As a black man living in America, I am embarrassed and disappointed, and a little angry. After years of being told that "racism is dead! post-racial America! Obama is President, what are you complaining about!" Tonight is proving to vindicate my assessment of the country of my birth. Reinforces the belief I've had since I first learned what it meant to be a black boy in America at age 5; They don't want you here, and it's more than just a few bad apples and trolls on the internet.

Really disappointing, America. I'm not sky is falling, because I think Hillary is going to win, but I'm saddened that hate has been allowed to fester for so long. This is what happens when hate isn't confronted when it crops up in all of its forms. When people don't want to "start anything" because they're afraid of "rocking the boat," or damaging already damaged relationships. Damn disappointing. I learned today that my mom didn't register to vote this year, and it really upset me. My sister had been trying to convince her to vote for months and months, but she's too stubborn. A 67 year old black woman who has lived through the America that Donald Trump wants to bring back, yet she didn't vote. I am truly afraid of more people sharing her sentiments and not voting.

This race really shouldn't be as close as it is. Any other election, and maybe I'd understand, but when it's Donald Trump on the ticket, it seemed like a no brainer that he'd crash and burn. I'd like to say I'm shocked by this, but I'm not. This is nothing I didn't expect from my country, but it's still fucking disappointing.

Hey if Trump wins it'll actually rally all the libs who didn't vote to get off their asses in 2020.

Maybe this will be a true catalyst for change.

lol. I really can't believe how many first time Millenials are in here sweating about this stuff. It's ok to admit you're not really into politics. But aside from Virginia, there is nothing really even close to surprising. What is scary about these swing states? In common terms, Trump NEEDS them. Not Clinton.

If Trump wins, or if Hillary barely wins, someone has to serve up the hundreds of smug, supposedly well-informed NeoGAF posts over the past few months about how Trump is basically just handing over the election to Hillary, how the situation is not at all comparable to Brexit, how the generals are totally different from the primaries, etc. That way I'll know which posters to never take seriously again.

Pretty much.

GAF severely underestimated Trump. We'll mostly survive a Trump Presidency, but those Supreme Court nominees will fuck us for years. RIP Roe v. Wade.

Sanity looks to not be prevailing tonight.

Absolutely incredible. This sheds a really odd light on 95% of GAF mocking anyone who even remotely showed the possibility of a close race.

I remember being disappointed in America when George W Bush won. I remember being even more disappointed when he won again.

That disappointment pales in comparison tonight.

Yeah, I remember being rocked to my very core when Bush was reelected. Should have learned my lesson of the depths of ignorance and hatred that the American people are capable of.

All of those posts that said it "wasn't close," "queen Hillary sllllaaaaayyy," "can't wait for the salt', etc.

Now you understand why you don't do that. Polls only know what people tell them. People clearly voted for Trump and didn't want to say it. Even if he wins, everyone missed.

Black and liberal women, prepare to be fucked hard in the coming years. This is a revenge from white male.

Pfft. Minorities in general. You thought police murdering unarmed blacks was a problem now? Wait till Orange face is in charge.
