United States Election: Nov. 8, 2016 |OT| Hate Trumps Love

The other day I stated that while racism is a factor in Trump's appeal to so many people it's not the only motivation, to which I of course got dogpiled. Any suggestion that Trump could be receiving support from your typical, ordinary, every day American who has no issue with minorities is dismissed.

There are a LOT of angry working class people in formally industrialised parts of the US who are now unemployed and blame Washington and globalisation for their troubles. Labelling these people racists for supporting Trump is simplistic and perhaps a reason for Clinton's imminent defeat. If the Dems hope to take back the WH and Congress they're going to need to start listening and taking on board legitimate grievances held by ordinary Americans.
They might not be racist, but they support a racist. Their grievances, no matter how legit, don't change that unfortunately.

Honest Question from someone from Germany.

HOW could all the estimates be so wrong? Were there so many people who lied b/c they felt ashamed that they'll vote Trump? I just don't get it.
And how could people vote against their own interest?

Ignorance.

Self-sabotage is always an act of ignorance.

I've got to teach my students in about 20 minutes. I teach in Asia at an international school. We've been following the election today, and one of the kids asked me who I voted for. "Hillary," I said. "Are you nervous right now?" the student continued. All I could say was "I can't use the language I want to use right now, so I'll just say yes, I'm nervous." I think next period's new vocabulary word will be "apoplectic."

Seriously though, what a terrible thing to have to end up teaching today. Sometimes, apathy and hate win, kids. It doesn't mean that there aren't good people out there; it just means that most people aren't good, or at least don't care about being good. Have a good day, kids.

PA, WI and MI going to the Republican Presidential candidate. What a goddamn clusterfuck. It's not even a question anymore that Hillary was the wrong candidate, fucking primary election results be damned. Trump electrifies people. Hillary doesn't. This was very clearly the election of the anti-establishment and the Dems fucking blew it nominating Hillary. Their mistake was going with a fucking snoozer of a candidate who has demonstrable likability problems, not to mention decades of highly exploitable baggage regardless of that not really being her fault. People have been saying it for months, and the smugness of Hillary supporters here in the face of all the criticisms laid against her really looks pretty sad now.

I really did not see this happening, though. I will admit that. I am legit in shock. I voted for Hillary (and Feingold) here in WI btw.

2016- the year a tangerine-ball sack took charge of the free world

If there ever was a god, he so thoroughly imams utterly doesn't give a shit.

Wow. So he won? Holy shit our economy is going to fucking tank. At least I have a lot in the bank. I feel really bad for the poor.

Our new future. Trump winning give the deplorables a voice.

As I'm sure as already been said a dozen times, this is a troll account.

honestly as a white person, i'm going to go ahead and give the "fuck you white people" people a pass tonight from the bottom of my heart. i can't imagine what i'd be feeling as a minority right now and i can only assure you there are still many many white people in your corners

Because it's dangerous to change the rules to give yourself power that you might have to give to your enemies.

The enemies will just take it for themselves anyway... As we're about to see

If the democrats can't stop votes from happening then the country is just going to be a run away train of GOP fetishes and fantasies being made real

Banking on an expiration date.

How can we, in this climate, begin to handle the technology problem, when Barack Obama himself said the next President is going to inherit it...?

It scares the fuck out of me knowing we are absolutely going to expand poverty, inequality, and the precariat, the same boat that fueled a great deal of anti-establishment thinking...
I don't even want to contemplate the implications. I'm just going to hold on for the ride and hope that Trump's craziness will be curbed in some way. I wonder how much he really wants the job. Maybe it was all about the win.

Hes still has an okay popularity rating, he just couldn't get people excited for hillary and came off like a pussy against republican obstructionism. Should have went to war with these people.

This rating clearly doesn't matter as it looks like the country didn't truly feel that way.

The past 8 years of progressive progress could be wiped out.

You say fuck you racists, but say fuck you to an entire race?
Sounds pretty racist to me.
And he remains unbanned, two hours later, after people have quoted his racist post dozens of times.

Arrogant B****** was banned immediately for saying "f*** you browns" (as he should have been)

This is really getting ludicrous, and I would really appreciate a mod chiming in as to the NeoGAF policy on this

Gaf, try and save your "I told you so" until tomorrow. People are scared and angry, and it doesn't help. Let people mourn for a while

I live in Suburban Houston so I am not that worried for my integrity. Health care is gone though.

Also my girlfriend wants me to move with her to Argentina asap. It was eventually gonna happen but she's so afraid for me I can't help but feel like crying.

Not that I think it's actually possible, but he tapped the manufacturing jobs that were lost in coal country as an example and promised that it'd come back while Hillary said too bad, those jobs are gone forever. Who'd you vote if you were one of the people affected?

If you were into having a job again, you were clumped together a racist, as is the case in this thread from many many people.

Disclaimer- I voted Hillary.

This right here so much.

Both Bernie and Trump spoke to the heart of the matter to people in the rust belt. These are people who have felt ignored by the left and the right for decades now.

The hubris of the left let them believe they could move forward with just the coasts and minorities while leaving all those people behind is what sunk them. They felt that demographics were on their side so there wasn't a need to pander to unemployed former union workers.

Oh man, this is too entertaining. I was looking for something to make this board fun again, and here we are.

Make GAF fun again!

One of the absolute worst things about this is that the Republican Congress that refused to DO THEIR FUCKING JOB for nearly a year is not going to see any penalty, only reward for their actions.

Honestly? I can't even blame them for playing the game like this. If your only objective is results in your self-interest, and nobody's actually shaming you into doing otherwise, then that's all she wrote.

I think Harry Reid might have even killed the filibuster for SC appointments on his way out, judging from a recent interview I read. Whoops.

Listening to CBC they're interviewing people and a trump supporter at his rally told CBC that he didn't believe trump would win, and that Donald was just kidding about tossing out immigrants; Muslims and Hispanics are great Americans and the backbone of the economy. I feel like many people thinking this are in for a rude awakening.

Just got a call from my best friend who is a minority, could sense the crushed feeling in her voice. Will be hard to work through this with her.
