I am not even from the States and I am shocked that they voted Donald in. It is like some bizarre dream.

This morning, my 8 year old son asked me who won.
I told him Donald Trump did.
He says "So, the bully won?"
I didn't know what to say. I just hugged him.

As much as I was fucking around last night in the election thread, I went to bed last night and this reality shook me and kept me from sleeping for a while. I mean, someone who was accused of sexual assault numerous times, made fun of disabled people, doesn't care about the lives of minorities or immigrants and really only gives a shit about himself, someone who gave a stronger voice to people who are deplorable was just elected president of the united States by the electoral college that's supposed to stop things like this from happening AND the Republicans have control of all three branches of the government. It's surreal in the most unfortunate of ways.

So did Trump win because he got struggling 45+ year old's to vote in droves? People who lost / struggle with their jobs?

If Rudy Giuliani is truly made attorney general, I fear greatly for brown people of this country.

Stop and frisk everywhere!

I think I said it before in another thread but I'll say it here. With no Democrats in their way to stop them...Republicans will be making everyday Americans their enemy(Return of the culture wars or something else...?). There is no boogeyman in congress to stop them so they have to create some enemy.

Winning the popular vote by .1% is not statistically significant.

You do realize that if the electoral college was not in effect, that Trump supporters would actually come out to vote in New York and California.

All of those SNL skits with Hillary celebrating early are going to look so strange now.

Kate McKinnon's depiction of Clinton has been so, so funny as well as underrated with all the attention on Trump and the lampooning he has been receiving. It's going to be sad not to see Kate's Clinton for four more years.

but in another country, she would have won even by just 0.1%, regardless, it doesn't matter anymore, time for America to get its act together

But still the majority of voters wanted Clinton to become the president. Even if it's 1 vote that swings it, it should count in the election.

In most other countries, there would have been a 2nd round because neither candidate won 50%+1 vote.

Real proof that most Americans don't actually care about any of that shit. On this forum people treat that like it's the worst thing ever, which is definitely not in line with the real world

Liberal politicians around the world quickly need to come up with a message that resonates with the victims of globalisation. Both Trump and the Brexit brigade were able to fuse nostalgia, xenophobia and jingoism in a way that excited people who felt left behind by the modern world and yearned for the "glory days".

We are seeing former industrial heartlands in the UK and US turning to extreme-right candidates because they don't feel like anyone else gives a shit about them. Of course they are deluding themselves but it's damning that nobody has found an argument that works against it. What can candidates like Hillary Clinton say to people who have seen their livelihoods destroyed by the demise of traditional domestic industry? How can she appeal to those who are irritated by social progressivism? Just what can she offer them that will improve their lives? All she could do was call these people deplorable and say their jobs were never coming back, but the truth hurts, and people aren't going to vote for someone that hurls sand in their eyes and tells them to get with the times.

The obvious answer would be to offer education and universal minimum income. But Trump voters would not want that. It is going to be interesting/scary to see what red meat Trump throws to his supporters when it becomes apparent that he is not able to reverse or even slow down globalization/automation.

I'm pretty fucking upset with the DNC. Instead of letting the Bernie wave ride, they decided to do their best to discredit him at every turn, and put 100 percent of their support behind Hillary instead.
I find it pretty funny that people who are so quick to blame Hillary for losing (she did! its her fault!) still can't accept that its Bernie's own fault for his own losing too (he did! Its his fault). Bernie was running a campaign against a strongly liked (in her own party) basically incumbent. Instead of running something that would pull people in from both sides, he tried to build a new coalition and told all the others "You're old and corrupt". It was a losing plan. He lost. It was his own fault.

I think the DNC teardown on this has to be that they lost this for the same reason Gore and Kerry lost. They've got to find more charismatic, likeable candidates.

And the other way around in Southern states. You can't judge the popular vote as being the absolute determination because the system in place changes the game. The popular vote has NO bearing on the election and if it was based on the popular vote then the numbers would be different.

I'm sorry for all the salt. Guys, please remember this is just politics, don't stress over this stuff as much, some people thought the country would go down if Obama won, it didn't. It's going to be fine, be happy that Mass made rec pot legal, now we right coasters don't have to drive to Colorado to get legal mary jane!~!!!!!!

This is a disaster for progressive politics and agenda but may been a boon for Democratic Party politics. Heads will roll and changes will happen. This makes it more likely we will have a successful 2018/2020 and redistricting advantage.

How am I wrong? If you vote for an openly racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic man doesn't that make you complicit?

You're not wrong at all. Who knew demonizing Trump supporters (with their thin skin) actually emboldened them to go out and vote.

We as minorities lose either way: stay quiet or stand up for ourselves.

America showed its true colors last night, and I wrongly assumed the average American was better than this.

I never post in OT. I just needed to pop in for some commiseration. This is the only online community I really feel a part of. I'm glad most of you share my thoughts.

The sadness and the sickness and the anger are almost too much to bear. So much for Love Trumps Hate; apparently America loves Trump's hate. :'(

This isn't "just politics" these decisions impact billions of lives

man i was so wrong about the Reps, I strongly believed this election would be a starting ground for reform within the party, now it seems they come out stronger out of this election than ever before. I thought Trump was the weakest candidate in years and it turns out he was one of the strongest. I was soooo wrong.

If I was Obama I'd just leave early. Why bother? I feel for him. I bet he feels betrayed.

This isn't getting solved with a defeatist attitude.

The United States needs to find a way to survive the next four years and figure out how the fuck this happened in the first place. Dems need to come back strong.

whaaa??? billions??? dude, it's all good, I don't see how that would happen, ya'll should be happy in all seriousness, maybe with him being a little more nationalistic, maybe he can get the cia to stop some of this crazy nation building, ala' isis, etc...

No thanks. It's obviously more complex than "you voted for Trump, you're a bigot".

If you can't see that I'm not going to exhaust myself arguing the point.

I mean, you literally are giving zero substance to your point. The entire reason we are asking you to explain is because we obviously don't see the point, otherwise we wouldn't be asking you to explain.

I don't get why you're not a bigot if you vote for Trump.

You need to take a few days or weeks get it out of your system and come back and work the midterms. Get out the vote, work with people in your area be the change you talk about online but actually do it.

Giving up does not fix things. Doubling down and fighting for what you believe and helping candidates that work for you fixes things.

Everyone is sad and depressed I am as well but we need to work on fixing things just not giving up.

And yet that's precisely what caused her to lose the presidency. He saw exactly what her achilles heel was while so many Democrats chose to ignore it. Trump built a new coalition and destroyed Hillary by pouncing on her being corrupt.

I'm just so...ashamed. I can't be proud of a United States that fully embraced xenophobia, racism and sexism so fully in a president-elect.

Just woke up and clocked in but decided to post on GAF.

I'm inspired right now. I'm an artist so what I do is music and I have an idea of what I need to do, I'm thoroughly inspired to write some new songs, do some new music just overall something hit me. We're living in hard times and all I can do is keep moving forward. I can't let this stop me from protecting my family and friends. I can't let this stop me from living my life. I'm a black Southern man in the South, I have it hard enough as it but I can make a difference, I can make change and I can do what I can to support those I love. I can make a way. Regardless who our president is, I refuse to be stopped. As far as I'm concerned, I gotta do what I gotta do so that involves living life to the fullest.

I hope everyone is safe and continues to be safe. We can't give up. We have an obligation to uphold to our loved ones to keep going. Let's do it together.
