This is one of those things where I personally find myself not really knowing what to say. I think of myself as pretty liberal and think that Donald Trump is a morally repugnant human being. The results last night were very depressing to me. But having said that, I've long been a bit uncomfortable with the rhetoric that seeks to throw all Trump voters into the basket of deplorables. And it's not necssarily that I disagree with what people are saying about what a vote for Trump truly stands for. But part of it -- and I want to note that this is not self praise as I'm not saying that this is a good quality -- is just that I always try to be more pragmatic and diplomatic than I am passionate. And as such I've never really found this type of talk very productive.

I'm not saying that the people who engage in it are wrong. I'm just saying that I've always kind of been one to take a step back and try and not throw the baby out with the bathwater. While it's tempting and even arguably correct to surmise that racists won and call it a day, I personally think it's a tad more productive to consider that things are just a bit more complicated than just labeling roughly half the country irredeemably reprehensible and calling it a day.

Mind you, I'm just kind of rambling here. I haven't really formulated a cogent thought about just what the hell happened here.
Wish I can feel the same as you but I don't. This election has made one thing clear to me and that is white people really hate me and others that look like me

I wonder how shocked some Americans will be when the Illegal immigrants are deported and they can't get their fast food quick enough because there is no staff.
This is just a hyperbole but this may or may not happen in some cases. Plus I am not saying all illegal immigrants work fast food jobs as well.

My feeling is that Trump is more a symptom of pent-up anger at the "establishment" rather than all his supporters exhibiting bigotry.

Bigotry exists in all shades and forms. When people e.g. say that sexism mattered they don't mean that people immediately thought "Woman = Bad president". Bigotry is a lot more complicated than many like to pretend.

Or when the lawns don't mow themselves.

The US was pretty divided on slavery and then civil rights for over a century. It may take until 2050 or longer to get to a true acceptance of equality and diversity by the overwhelming majority of the US population.

I hope your are right, and I have to hope that is true. I realize positive cultural change can be painfully slow.

Disagree entirely. Trump is a response to 8 years of Obama. As if 8 years of Bush wasn't a vastly bigger insult.

Hey guys just woke up. I had this awful dream.
It seems surreal. I watched a giant train crash in slow motion right before my eyes last night and was helpless. I'm still in disbelief and extremely disappointed in us as a nation. This is an utter disgrace.

As a straight white male with a decent job, I doubt my life will change all that much. As a straight white male in an interracial relationship all I can say is that I'm disgusted in the way everything turned out.

They can. The republicans run senate, house, and presidency plus will pick a Supreme Court justice...

No, they can't. And they won't. Both Bush and Obama controlled all of congress at points during their office. We didn't lose our guns. Abortion didn't go away. That's not how American politics has ever worked, and the fear mongering in this thread is unhealthy. In four years, the country will basically be the same. 8 years of Obama only shifted some things here, some things there. Nobody took our guns, or did any of the other things people fretted about. It's the same here. Our two party system is structured for power to sway back and forth without it tilting the ship too much.

This election reminded us how little has changed since civil rights legislation and women were allowed to vote. While the laws have given anybody the right to achieve greatness in America, the majority of people haven't changed. There are a ton of uneducated white people in this country that have spoken that they want America to throw out Muslims, think it's okay to disrespect women, and build a wall. I just hope that the laws will keep us safe, because I have lost faith in the people.

Lol. So despite a current black president, we are basically the South, 1863?

Hyperbole cost the democrats an election. It will cost them more if they don't actually try to engage the electorate instead of writing them off.

Fuck engaging with them. The Democrats need to fight that electorate every step of the way.

In case you forgot, here is the premise of the The Running Man, which takes place in 2017:

In 2017, after a worldwide economic collapse, American society has become a totalitarian police state, censoring all cultural activity. The U.S. government pacifies the populace by broadcasting game shows where convicted criminals fight for their lives, including the gladiator-style The Running Man, hosted by the ruthless Damon Killian, where "runners" attempt to evade "stalkers", armed mercenaries, around a large arena, and near-certain death for a chance to be pardoned by the state.

Better start training, GAF.

Those are the "Fuck you got mine" Latinos. All they care about is looking white to white people.
That's such bullshit. Plenty of Latinos without privilege have worked hard and gone through the legal channels to become us citizens so seeing others who haven't worked for it being rewarded doesn't seem right to them. It's not as black and white as you want to portray it.

I was led to believe (and wanted to believe) that the American public was by a majority, decent people who would largely reject this kind of candidate based on his actions, policy proposals, and personality.

I'm as disappointed in and embarrassed for the US as I have ever been. I'm not even going to touch on the race or gender implications here.

Totally agree. Hate is the strongest motivator. When you turn a blind eye to people's legitimate concerns (whether they are a victim of rural flight, religious, etc) and label them all as bigoted and deplorable, you stoke their hatred and this is what you get. People aren't one-dimensional cartoons. Grandma Sally could be against abortions because she has been taught all her life that every life should be cherished. This does not make her a woman-hater. Rural miner Bob is scared of his future. The young people in town have all left for the big cities, green energy is leaving him, his family, and his community behind. This doesn't make him a racist. This isn't to say that all Trump supporters are free of blame; the people you see in the rallies are real. But they do NOT make up 50% of this nation.

I'd like to see my fellow liberals being humbled by this loss. We all can do better than that. Hopefully, the people I see doubling down on the hateful rhetoric are just emotional over the loss. Hopefully, we don't make the same mistake. We can't become the left's version of the Tea Party. Our sensible policies are at risk of being drowned out by hate-mongering and divisiveness.

Civil rights was the 1960s, not the 1860s.

And come the fuck on with the "black president" card. Hey, guess who's up next!

But you may be right about Demd having to cozy up to idiots to get ahead. It works really well for Republicans after all.

Obama has to shake hands and brief a bigot who started a smear campaign against him, claiming that he was a muslim and not really American. I feel for that man so much right now. He must feel like the past 8 years were for nothing. An insult to his legacy.

I'm not an American, but I think this perspective is extremely valuable. People are very quick to say white, male racists did this all on their own, which is laughable and impossible. Women voted for him, black people voted for him, smart people voted for him. People voted for him because they are each not happy about something in the country and they are fed up with traditional political garbage and didn't have any faith in Clinton. Many people clearly voted to upset the establishment.

Was this a safe thing to do? I don't know, but the cage has been significantly rattled which is exactly what all these voters wanted. A lot of these people seem to feel the system is so broken they'd rather see it get worse so it can maybe get better in their eyes. I don't think half of Trump's supporters believe in him or what he thinks. He is their spear.

Some people who voted Obama had to have voted Trump. Think about that.

Is the Trump rape case still going to happen?

Nope, they cut her a fat check to make her go away.

The Trump University case is still going to happen but he will be pardoned.

That whole case stank. 3rd time it's been dropped

http://www.snopes.com/2016/11/05/trump-rape-lawsuit-dropped-again/

Let this be a lesson as horrible as someone is, and as much evidence as we do have for many allegations, not every single allegation can be trooped around as a political gotcha. Basically hedging your bets on this lawsuit to end the Trump campaign was chasing an outcome before it even got going. Some of these mistakes cannot be made again by an opposition campaign coming up against an opposition such as Trump.

Are you serious?
Oh he is. Facts don't get to these people. Actual environmental disasters due to climate change don't get to them. Floodings, forest fires, historical droughts. constant record setting temperatures.. nah it's all coincidence and the science isn't clear. Makes you depressed about the future for sure.

I never thought I'd see the day where I would literally lose sleep over a presidential election. If Trump is to be the representative for America, I worry about what this says to the rest of the world.

no he doesn't. He doesn't have super majorities in either house. That fact will keep much of the hyper partisan stuff at bay, but you will see strong overtures in areas like the budget and going after the ACA.

I highly doubt immigration will even be touched in trump's first four years unless rubio makes it his pet project again for another play at the white house. However day one, Trump is probably gonna erase every single active Executive Order Obama has done.

The filibuster can be gotten rid of in a simple majority vote by the senate, which is pretty expected.

The Great White Rebellion. Fucking makes me sick. I'm ashamed beyond belief right now. We've elected Donald fucking Trump to the presidency. I can't even focus on work today. This is beyond fucked.

I'd like to express some anger towards EviLore for allowing Trump ads to run on this site, btw. I posted in the ad feedback thread and never got a response and saw many ads after that. Just saying.

Same here. I think I may just head home early today as no work is actually getting done.

That's a random thing to be mad about.

Ah yes the old, "IF I DIDNT HAVE IT EASY YOU CANT HAVE IT AT ALL".

You're not really making them out to be the most sympathetic bunch you know?

I'm not even Hispanic and I can emphasize with how much shit these families have to go through just so they can have a life here.

yet he will still conduct himself honorably until he leaves the White House on January 10

he will be broken once Trump repeals every executive order he made :(

This is so true. I was really happy when Obama joined in the fight against climate change, but seems like it's going to be really short lived.

Don't fret, the rest of the world was worried about you guys already.. but we know now you're totally screwed. And because of Trump's stance on climate change (the lack there of) and international policy, we're screwed too.
