Guys, Trump isn't running the show besides a few larger staff picks or whatever.

This is Pence's government now. Pence will be the one controlling policy and getting things done with the Senate and House considering his ties to the establishment.

true, will he put up gay conversion centers in red states?

No, they can't. And they won't. Both Bush and Obama controlled all of congress at points during their office. We didn't lose our guns. Abortion didn't go away. That's not how American politics has ever worked, and the fear mongering in this thread is unhealthy. In four years, the country will basically be the same. 8 years of Obama only shifted some things here, some things there. Nobody took our guns, or did any of the other things people fretted about. It's the same here. Our two party system is structured for power to sway back and forth without it tilting the ship too much.
We didn't lose our guns because Obama never actually wanted to take away everyone's guns. He never campaigned or promoted anything like a full repeal of the 2nd amendment. That noise came strictly from the right fearmongering themselves into buying more guns.

And abortion will never go away completely, but Republican legislatures have certainly made it much harder in many states for women to seek legitimate abortion assistance. Hundreds of new laws have been passed in recent years at the state level to hobble abortion procedures with unnecessary regulation and/or basically make it impossible for clinics to function properly.

The point is that if they've campaigned on it, there's certainly an effort made to shift things in that direction and at least some progress is generally made towards those goals. There's every reason then to be concerned about what Trump will do based on the things he said he'd do in his campaign, esp. when his party essentially controls all three major branches of government and can now apparently handicap one of them at will (SCOTUS).

I'm so downtrodden right now. Any progress we made will likely be hindered or stopped. And I'm so sorry for all of my fellow citizens who are scared right now because they're considered minority.
Be strong guys, we can make it through.

Well, I'm sure some will argue that moderation here isn't balanced. But I'm just going to side-step that entirely as I'm not really in the mood for a meta-coversation about whether mods do a good or bad job here, I'll just note that it doesn't really make a lot of sense to assume that a forum of tech-enthusiast (mostly) millennials is going to be a perfect microcosm of the populace at large.

Not to mention a site which you obviously need to sign up to with a personal email address and then wait to be approved. We do cater to a select audience on GAF, for the most part. Most run of the mill people even if they found GAF would scoff at the idea of waiting for approval and just go back to instant shitposting on twitter/FB/reddit.

It's not a bad or good thing, it just is. Although many DO praise moderation here as there is a lot of nastiness that isn't doing any forum any good catering for it. The last 24 hours should once and for all put to bed the argument mods don't care about attacks on Trump supporters. Many names were banned even during an understandably emotional time for posting overly harsh remarks.

It's not just Trump winning.

The House and Senate are now GoP controlled too.

Liberal America is dead.

yeah, it should be very easy for him to revoke health care for millions of American people now, because everybody will agree.

In other news, this sobering shitshow motivated me to go get registered this morning for the 2017 french election. I've been planning to do it for months but could never find the time. My vote isn't going to be much against the rise of the far-right but hey, I'll have a clear conscience at least.

Something a lot of Hillarybots had to say when she was illegally ratfucking Bernie out of the nomination, edited for now:

"She lost on votes."

So there ya go! Hope this was worth letting the Clintons roll our deomcracy around in shit and money.

Hope everyone who swallowed her lies like candy feels appropriately embarrassed that she couldn't beat someone who has no business near the presidency! Fortunately for me the responsibility of this outcome rests ONLY on those who blindly denied Hillary's horrific shit-record and pushed her forward to the election despite the warning signs.

I see both sides as lopsided, there is definitely hostility coming from both sides, but it's not in equal measure and one side is significantly nastier than the other, that side won last night.

Lol. Brexit isn't going to mean the kind of change the Remain camp feared and the Leave camp hoped for.

So no, America are way ahead with this one dude.

So tell me how the UK votes Brexit away in 4 years? Trumps mess hasn't been created yet, just speculated on, but it's fact the US can get rid of him in 4 years.

I'm so happy. Someone going against the system, I will always support.

And the mainstream media helping Trump by making people believe Clinton will win easily.
CNN, Clinton News Network, I salute you.

I would like to ask you personally: Are you also happy that a homophobic man who wants to electrocute homosexuals until they are "cured" (heterosexual) is now vice president? Or is that just not as important as the whole "going against the system" thing?

This is what makes me so angry about this. The fun-loving "HEY! WE NEEDED SOMEONE OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM! FUCK THOSE CORRUPT POLITICIANS HAHA" who actually call themselves centralists or liberals or democrats who ALSO completely ignore the very real consequences this will have for minorities. Do you just not care? Do you just deem it as not as important? Do you ignore that part? I really, really don't get it.

Is that supposed to make me feel better? As a bi American that makes me feel worse.

Conservatives routinely get banned on GAF and learn not to speak, so this place feels like an echo chamber.

The fact that there are few open conservatives who can stay unbanned says more about the posters themselves than about the site or a moderation bias. The ones who are around are actually decent conversationalists and have links, receipts, etc.

there was moral superiority complex going on with siding with Hillary. This shut down conversation because anyone with opposing opinion was dismissed into that basket of deplorables. It shows how hive mind like forums can be, and how difficult it can be to get real discussion

But literally every time people were challenged on their reasons for supporting Trump they came out with stuff either completely not supported by him, or stuff that was and was therefore bannable under the no racism, homophobia, etc rules.

Trump's platform was very clear from the outset and he was very proud of it. Sometime's a demagogue is just that.

Could the Democrats realistically just wash their hands of everything and say "Welp, you got the power now, see you in four years" and just walk out of everything? I mean, might as well considering that the Republicans will control everything, the White House, the Congress and the Senate. I would distance myself the fuck away from all that was them for the inevitable shitstorm that their incompetence is gonna be so it couldn't be in any way traced to me.

a lot of truth here....

Why are people so certain of Pence running things. Everything we know about Trump is that he is an egomaniac and a control freak. I can't imagine him letting someone else take the reigns. On top of that, he does have a lot of experience working within the business system. Debatable how successful he was, but it does seem like he is good at finding loopholes and manipulating people.

It's a sad, disappointing day...truly.

I don't think it mattered who ran against him...they would have lost unless it was another radical outsider. Maybe Bernie Sanders? Who knows... But this also showed that what people really wanted was a deep change in our political system. The problem is that he was not the right guy to do it. They wanted an outsider no mater how ignorant, unfit and unstable he was. This came down to the uninformed and ignorant people in this country (large majority of those who are in rural areas), white supremacist groups, NRA, Koch brothers, the greedy corporations and oil industries that got him elected. And I truly believe that Russian had a play in this.

Clinton was far from perfect. She had many faults but she was at least reliable, rational, and smart. And she knew what Brexit was...

Someone going against the system is not a position. This view is childish. Trump is more establishment than you understand.
