German Gaffer here, it's now 12 and a half hours since I read the news and I still can't believe it. I can't even begin to imagine how some of US GAF must feel like.

As another fellow German please make sure to vote next year and remind others to do the same. Leave no room for assholes like the AfD. Then you hopefully don't have to feel like lots of Americans do now. We also ave hateful people here that feel particularly encouraged by recent events.

Reposting some of a post in another thread but Bernie had the right idea. Alienated too much of the electorate.

Sanders: "I do not believe that most of the people who are thinking about voting for Mr. Trump are racist or sexist. Some are, but I think most are people who are hurting, they’re worried about their kids, they’re working longer hours for lower wages."

Everyone saying this is the worst day for minorities. Obviously this doesn't speak for all of them, but let's see if Trump follows through and helps the inner cities.

Besides term-limits I am very keen to see if he will be sincere on this declaration.

Predictions for the first year:

1. "Tax cuts for all". Middle class get about $200 in savings a year. People near the poverty line actually have to pay more. The wealthy get substantial savings. (Deficits and recession to follow in year 4 or 5)

2. ACA is gutted. Pre-existing condition denials return. College kids no longer covered after 22. People get dropped when they become sick.

3. Net neutrality is officially killed by something called the Internet Freedom Act. This bill allows internet providers freedom from any sort of neutral packet handling.

4. Supreme court spot #9 is filled by some sort of bizarre nominee with a clear history of insane and/or racist judgement and/or without any judicial experience.

5. EPA is shut down in the Environmental Savings Act. This bill allows corporation to do what they want, saving them from having to worry about the environment.

6. Iran treaty cancelled. Iran begins starts proceeding to nuclear again. Americans start beating the drums of war.

7. Russia starts eyeing some land in turkey. Trump looks the other way.

8. A wall is NOT built, but police forces and immigration forces continue militarization.

9. Jobs are NOT brought back, automation accelerates, minorities/immigrants are blamed.

10. 2017 is warmest year on record. Climate change is ignored or labeled a conspiracy.

11. Filibuster is eliminated.

12. Religious Freedom Act explicitly exempts sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes of people. New Supreme Court upholds in 2020.

Not sure about #7. Turkey isn't a country you can easily bully.

Change Turkey for Ukraine IMO.

Obama is acting like this is just the business-as-usual transfer of power, rather than a hugely devastating loss for American and its minorities. I mean, I didn't expect him to come out screaming and shouting, but him acting like this is normal is deeply disheartening and troubling.
What is he supposed to do? He's the president, and that includes being president of Trump's voters as well. He did his best to prop up Hillary, but it's over now.

He has to move beyond, because as he said, it's not about just one person. Gracious as always, and I didn't expect anything less.

So I've been looking through all of the Trump and post election threads... How come no one is talking about an openly racist/sexist/islamaphobic man being elected president?

This is a man who is openly supported by the KKK and other white supremacist organizations. And half the country voted for him. How come no one is bringing that up?

Instead it's all about how Hillary and the Dems didn't do enough for the white base. So what? They then went to vote for the man with 12 to 15 assault charges against him from women and barely a sense of how the government works? A man who helped start up the birther movement? Trump is the man who started off his campaign by calling a majority of mexicans criminals and rapists. That's who people voted for?

Maybe America is more xenophobic than we thought. Sure seems like it.

economic anxiety my ass.

I would like to ask you personally: Are you also happy that a homophobic man who wants to electrocute homosexuals until they are "cured" (heterosexual) is now vice president? Or is that just not as important as the whole "going against the system" thing?

This is what makes me so angry about this. The fun-loving "HEY! WE NEEDED SOMEONE OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM! FUCK THOSE CORRUPT POLITICIANS HAHA" who actually call themselves centralists or liberals or democrats who ALSO completely ignore the very real consequences this will have for minorities. Do you just not care? Do you just deem it as not as important? Do you ignore that part? I really, really don't get it.

Saying something and doing something is something else entirely. I think Trump is sane enough to know he should never bring this idea up.

Too much fear mongering going on. Trump is not the lunatic we all seemingly want him to be.
His victory speech also was pretty moderate. I bet Trump will tone down his language considerably now that he's president.

I don't support his homophobic ideas but that doesn't mean I can't support him. There is no candidate where you agree with everything he or she says.

13. Gutting our support for NATO

7. I think should be Ukraine

It's done. There's nothing more that needs to be said or that he can do.
You cant encourage panic in the position he is.

I don't think he should have encouraged panic or insinuated that there would be chaos or economic collapse.

I feel like he should have, at the very least, delivered some kind of requiem for his own legacy......and encouraged people to continue fighting for the values he represented. This was basically "Awwww shucks we lost.....these things happen, better luck next time."

It's been brought up plenty. But I guess we are just desensitized to it by now since he has been playing this role for so long

Because unless both candidates are objectively equally terrible, the inaction of eligible voters could contribute to the worse of the two likely outcomes. As it did in this election.

The fact that something as obvious as this still needs to be explained in 2016 is exactly the problem. You have some people who vote party cause thats how they were raised, you have people who dont vote thinking that theyre "sending a message". Ridiculous. Enjoy the next 4 years.

HUGE upset!

Never thought he would win, but here we are. Congratulations are in order to the Trump campaign. I hope Trump will surround himself with great advisors, and that ultimately, a Trump presidency will lead to more good than bad.

Even sadder is that people like that don't realize it's not going to get any better with Trump.

I'd expect nothing less from Obama.

This is going to be a downgrade of massive proportions and most of what Obama accomplished will be erased very soon.

Imagine for a second either Hillary or Obama even hinting at desperation, anger or even started to cry. The signal that would send to all of America and the world would be the signal of resignation. That is by far the most dangerous thing they could have done. By being calm and controling themselves they made sure to not harm Democracy even further.

This NEEDS to be business as usual in order to preserve American Democracy.

It's really not though. This is how a president handles things. The reaction you're looking for is something Trump would do.

He is much better off trying to warm people up to the reality of a Trump led America and then attack individual issues as they arise.

Sorry. I think I was a bit confusing.
http://bipartisanpolicy.org/library/2012-voter-turnout/

2000 - 45.8% did not vote
2004 - 39.6% did not vote
2008 - 37.7% did not vote
2012 - 42.5% did not vote
2016 - 46.9% did not vote

Not American, so I'm not sure how reliable the original source actually is.

Nah I got that, I mean I am shocked with the stakes this high less turned out this year than in 2012.

Look at what happened when America got its ass in gear in 2008 for Obama. Although I admit how poor Clinton is compared to him.

What can be said that hasn't already? Large swaths of minorities didn't give a fuck about his legacy and a good chunk of America thinks it was shit.

Everything that has been needed to be said, has.

Why do you assume all the people who didn't vote would have voted for Clinton?

How do jobs that have been outsourced to other countries come back to America? It would seem to me, there will always be cheaper labor overseas. Cutting Corporate taxes will allow them to see more revenue, not decide to move jobs back home. But there has to be some way for these jobs to come back, right?

My only wish, and its an outlier, is that if you look at Trump's history from the late 90's, early aughts, he makes a lot of comments that are more liberal based. My last hope is that he was the ultimate troll of the GOP to get here, and now he's going to be more moderate.

Its a long stretch.

I know Republicans want to kill ACA, but can it easily be repealed after the Courts already made a decision on it? Is the govt seriously just going to say fuck off to the millions of people insured under this plan? Are the American people seriously going to allow it without any uproar?

Lowering the minimum wage...

Even if you hope for the best with Trump, he doesn't have the policy knowledge or willpower to see anything through competently. The delegator-in-chief is going to do what Pence, Congress, and Bannon tell him to do.

If you bring it up people say you're not being considerate of his supporters and that you have to be nicer than they are.

Just have to wait til February or so for the juice to kick in

Pre-existing condition denials return. College kids no longer covered after 22. People get dropped when they become sick.
Fuck...

I'm 24 and was kind of relying on the whole "covered until 26" thing to get some momentum and whatnot job-wise.

And I just realized that asperger's/autism falls under pre-existing conditions

Fuck

Once the ACA is gone, what has Obama done donestically in 8 years? (The bailout packages were being developed before he became POTUS)

Executive actions that will be quickly snuffed out. Renewable energy subsidies which will be snuffed out. Yeah, it's gonna be like Obama was never president. Fuck, it's gonna be further back domestically than Bush W.

He should call everyone deplorables, obviously.

No, that's why the rhetoric has been "repeal and replace", however no one is ever really specific about what they will replace it with.

Can you explain why they are so against ACA? I just don't get it.
