The problem is people are lumping all trump supporters as racist. Yes, there's clearly a racist/sexist base there but there are also people with legitimate concerns and fears about their livelihood and globalization. These people need to be spoken to instead of talked down upon.
This whole election GAF has been chuckling at the schadenfreude of the GOP eating itself and falling apart. "I sure hope the GOP does some soul searching after they lose" has been a common sentiment. Well now the tables have flipped and there doesn't seem to be much soul searching on the DNC's side, but there DEFINITELY needs to be.
The message is just, the delivery needs some tweaking.

I think the main message is that we shouldn't shut down conversation by just mass labelling people. People get defensive which will shore up their resolve in their point of view if we come at them like this. If we only took the time to understand why they felt that way, why they had to vote trump in even if it goes against their best interests i think hilary might have done better.

Some Bernie supporters in the primary threads blamed black people for not turning out in huge numbers for him, saying we were low information voters. Obviously this was not the whole of his support but where was the "hearts and minds" talk then? A lot of people agreed with those posters, didn't see many Sanders supporters calling them out.

At any rate by you bring Sanders back up you're kind of giving validity to the idea that spurned Sanders supporters flipped Trump despite being asked to support Hillary, which at the time people said was just paranoia.

I feel like this vote was as much a "f*ck you" vote as anything. For the past 12+ months any supporter of the Republican ticket (most notably Trump supporters) were hammered by the messaging that if you didn't vote for Hilary we were racist, un-educated white who worked a blue collar job whose vote and opinion didn't really matter because somehow you were not an equal. That was the narrative the Hilary campaign and almost as important was the message the media all hammered home. Somehow middle America because they didn't have a diploma or worked a non-white collar job were less than equals for their concerns or needs. That just fueled the fire of an already angered middle America that already felt forgotten and I think ultimately led to so many casting what I call the "f*ck you" vote.

Yes, Hillary should lie to them, and completely misrepresent what is possible, or what she feels is actually right, and to also stop talking about social issues, and to acknowledge that Mexicans are stealing our jobs.
