In fact all the state proposals ARE direct democracy. Cali voting to legalise weed? Direct democracy right there.

Yeah but it's technically not legal really. The state police will no longer enforce laws. Its still illegal federally and the federal government can technically force states to enforce the federal laws. They have just decided as of now not to.

Has Trump not responded to this stuff going on yet?

He'll probably try to wait out the worst of it and hope it goes away I guess.

He can't dismiss them all now though. That would make things worse. He has to try to unify them all - he has no choice as he's got the job now, and does not have a police/military crackdown as an option.

I imagine his advisors are trying to discuss with him how he should respond, as the weight of what he has gotten himself into sinks in.

Does anyone know or has any news outlet reported on how these protests sprung up yet?

The_Donald Reddit thinks it was organized by George Soros. They think this is another corrupt Hillary sham.

jesus, as in the people voted, every vote no matter the background, status, ... had the same weight. you can't give the people a more direct say in how they want to shape the political culture of a country

Electoral College actually creates weighted votes. Exact opposite of the point you are trying to make. JESUS.

What do you want explained. Angry Hilary supporters attacked a Trump supporter. Essentially giving Trump supporters EXACTLY what they want. And now they are using it against Hillary supporters and will continue to use that video as some kind of blanket defense that THEY are the peaceful and accepting ones. Good job violent assholes in the video!

You are of course free to feel disappointed but a democracy should be able to handle the result of a direct democratic process with dignity.
Protesting is exactly that, handling it with dignity. How is protesting peacefully not dignified? The fuck am I reading in this topic.

That's a hell of a twitter account. Pro-Trump, Anti-"SJW", White Supremacist, Homophobic....

My problem with that video is people using it to somehow say "See, your side is no better than ours!"

The problem is, one candidate campaigned on hatred towards certain groups of people, whereas the other did not. One candidate seems to condone these actions, the other does not. THAT is the overwhelming difference between the two situations.

And I need to make it clear, this kind of violence is never ok, no matter who you are or what your "reasons" are.

Factually wrong, votes did not have the same weight. Quite fucking literally, the EC system makes it so some states's votes are more valuable than others.

Are you saying my vote made less of an impact than my neighbors vote?

Point is, every citizen could vote no matter the sex, race, status(barring criminals,..), the people could make a decision, now with the electoral college in place some states are more important than others but no matter how big or small the state, each citizen's vote in a state could shift the electorate the same way. But the process was clear from the beginning.
You can disagree and say that the EC is unjust but 1 day after the election is too little too late.

I am all for these protesters doing their thing. We can only hope this somehow gets through Trumps thick skull (and toupee) and that his talk is not going to be accepted in this country.

For you.
This is fucking dumb. He won the election. Do these people always cry and whine when they don't get everything they want?

Jesus
Yeah, fuck people using their democratic voice to express their concerns! What petty children they are! Their human rights are going to get fucked and they should just sit idly by watching that shit happen!

The EC is injust, and some votes literally, factually weight more than others. You're vote cannot shift the electorate the same way, because they're not the same between states.

Trump just won the election, I'd say his talk is widely accepted in the usa

The sky was falling eight years ago.

Obama was the anti-Christ.

This too shall pass. We can only hope Trump succeeds as being a good president for ALL people, and is reigned in if he actually tries anything ridiculous.

Considering we are talking about a NATIONAL election. Yours and your neighbors vote being weighted the same is not relevant. You want to purport that all votes are fair? You can't when a vote in Arkansas has more of an effect than a vote in California on who wins.

I saw the protests on the tv news here in Belgium. It seemed to be mostly LGBT people protesting. Correct me if I'm wrong but I never saw anything in Trumps program stating he would take away these people's right once he would get elected? The only LGBT related comment I saw Trump ever make was that he's ok with a transgender human to choose whatever bathroom he wants to use.

His VP is probably the most anti-LGBT politician in the country. Also he will sign a bill making it ok to discriminate against LGBT people on the ground of religious freedom.

most people have been saying it since last time the EC screwed us when Al Gore got more votes and lost

just because you know going in that you can get more votes and still lose doesn't mean you have to be okay with it. this is fucked up.

Still didn't stop people from pissing and moaning even going so far as to call Obama the devil.

If people don't like the electoral college. Go out and vote for change. They didn't go out and vote.
They did vote. All of these protests are in cities where Clinton won handsomely.

Well this is protesting the reality that this wasn't a normal shitty GOP candidate getting in. A white supremacist got in and has control of the entire government.

Rust belt may have been concerned with their tax bracket, but minorities are concerned about their very lives. Already a surge in KKK activity and other hate motivated attacks.

By who? His party his full control of Congress.

I'd like to think that there were plenty of leaders within his party that did not support him and/or are prepared to reign him in.

Maybe I'm putting too much faith in humanity, and I'm sure too much faith in the Republicans.

These protests will have the opposite effect. Trump supporters will harden and weaker non-supporters will flip.

He won legitimately. To inconvenience people in states where he lost badly makes no sense.

BTW, if you didn't do all of the following at minimum:

-donate to Hillary
-phone bank for Hillary
-volunteer for Hillary

... you really need to get off the road and go back home.

If this were 2000, I would say the protests would be unreasonable.

But this is 2016, and the president-elect got there by denigrating those protesting. This is meant to be a reminder of who is the majority here. Showing up to protest in NYC should be promoted. No hate and fear-monger is going to get to destroy the social fabric of America's progressive society. These protests are a show of force and I hope they continue.

I agree with pretty much

I strongly believe in protesting and have attended a fair few over the years.

I can't ride with this one though. If you feel that strongly then maybe you should have worked harder for Hillary or donated money or whatever.

And for the record I feel the Obama and even bush protests were just as dumb if not more so.

I still ultimately feel that these protests are meaningless, not that I necessarily disagree with them, the fact remains that he won the election and won quite easily, all this should've happened before the election when the voice could be heard

People in this thread do know that anti-trump protests have been happening throughout this election cycle, right? This isn't something that everybody just stayed silent about until November 9th.
