Pokémon Sun Version/Moon Version Review Thread

man, I'm probably gonna cave and buy it

yall think a Switch version is coming? that's my one hold up for holding off

I would be surprised if there was. MAYBE a 3rd version, or Sun2/Moon2 next fall, but I don't think they'll do a direct-port. Most likely that we have to wait until Gen 8.

I haven't bought it yet but I'm planning to, it better be a 9/10 game or there will be a thread on Neogaf.

So, what are the notable differences between the two versions?

Cross-posting from the locked OT:

Sun is real-time.

Moon is real-time, but inversed. So playing during the daytime, in real life, will have the game taking place in night and vice-versa.

Also some of the Totem Pokemon and Ultra Beasts, I.E. boss fights, are different between the versions.

Here are the version exclusive Pokemon: http://www.ign.com/wikis/pokemon-sun...lusive_Pokemon

So, what are the notable differences between the two versions?

Sun plays in "real time" essentially while Moon plays in the opposite time. So like, if it's day in Sun, it's night in Moon. And vice versa.

And of course your standard wild Pokemon differences. I think one of the totem battles is also different.

I'm loving all the changes they've made to various systems like not having to deal with HM's and showing the type matchup on the attack screen. Now I just need to figure out which version I want to play since I've got both pre-ordered and I'll take one and my roommate will grab the other.

If only the other jrpgs could get away with a cringeworthy story
Fire Emblem: Awakening has one of the most shallow and basic story ever told in the franchise/genre, Xenoblade X story took a backseat for 3/4 of the game, #FE was all things otaku distilled in one simple yet deep package and yet all of them reviewed incredible well.

The bar is not that high tbh

Woo! My copy just shipped from Amazon! Hoping this means it shows up a little early. I've never had Amazon send something 3 days early for release-date delivery before.

Tbh, the UI etc. kinda looks like it could be on the switch.

The bottom screen is only used for rotom and for battle menu. We could maybe get the battlescreen of the bottom screen as default screen on the Switch version? They could add the buttons to the top screen?

what does battle style set mean?

It means you don't get the chance to switch to another Pokemon before an opponent trainer sends their next one.

Shift style means seeing that dialog that usually says "Trainer is about to send _____. Do you want to switch your Pokemon" or something along those lines. Without that, you don't get that extra turn, so switching another one in means spending an extra turn.

X/Y Reviews in comparison...

Pokemon's always been a notoriously difficult game for the mainstream to review---most only focus on the superficial elements (no doubt X/Y got positive reviews because it was seen as leaving the "archaic" sprite era) and the central adventure. From what I've heard Sun and Moon delivers on a compelling new journey, but at the cost of bringing even more linearity to the fold and pushing the player along at a quick pace and with a post-game that is the series standard for the first entry of a Generation.

Hyped regardless though.

Yeah... I'm waiting until the hype dies down.

To everyone saying they aren't believing the reviews after X & Y:

I've been playing the game for a little while. I was one of the ones who didn't like X & Y, too. But Sun & Moon do exactly the opposite of all of the reasons why I disliked X & Y. I think you should definitely give this game a chance. It's really the best Pokémon game since Gold and Silver.

Reviews are looking good, but I'm still iffy on performance. I probably won't get it if it slows down too often. Are there any performance comparisons to X/Y?

Gold and Silver, or HeartGold and SoulSilver?

Same. Hadn't played a Pokemon in years, read the reviews about X/Y, bought it, immediately got bored. It's the same old, same old.

Will never understand why the mainline Pokemon games get such good scores, but hey, people like them, and they sell well, so clearly I'm the minority.

I was just looking at those reviews and they all said "same old, same old". Did you look at the scores or read the reviews?

Anyway, calling XY "same old, same old" isn't satisfactory because same old, same old has been better.

I can't comment much about Fire Emblem but those other two are not remotely on the same level as pokemon regarding story and their shortcomings in that respect were noted eitherway. They sit on 84 and 80 too, good scores but not incredible ones to say story/setting/characters didn't mattered in them

GOD DAMN!
Pokemon is fucking back! And so am I. Wonder when my Sun copy will arrive. X/Y was a disaster for me and AS/OR was the first mainline that I skipped.
