Do enough damage and disable them for a while. Maybe spend meter to do an "assist recall" and enable it again?
They could either have a limited stock (MVC style) or make them cost meter (Kof 2001 style), that way you could punish bad calls.
Still wouldn't be as satisfying as straight up killing a character due to a bad call.

There is one rumor that said that we might get 2 + 1 assist vs. 2 + 1 assist . There is another rumor that said that the battle system would be closer to MVC2. Regardless of any changes, I'm going to pick it up on day 1 and play the heck out of the game tho.
To be honest, I'm totally okay with any X-Men and Fantastic Fours being gone if it's going to open the gate where they could add more interesting characters with appealing and fun movesets. Of course, I would miss those characters but fighting games always changed their roster(s) so I'm pretty used to it.
