No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

Armourer directed me to an outpost underwater. Nothing there. The next 5 times were all directions to an outpost underwater which wasn't there. Now he's not giving me anymore locations at all! Guess I'll have to leave my home base and set up camp somewhere else. How frustrating!

I picked this game up for the first time after reading all the positivity online. I'm so glad I did; first impressions are off the ruddy charts! I'm going to avoid reading about the game online now and just learn as I go along. I think I'll be playing this for a long long time to come.

Sean has really upped his proc gen engine to new levels with this update. The planetary features I'm seeing in this update are way more sophisticated than prior to the update. That curved pointy hill in the middle, I never saw any forms that elegant pre-update. The color grading is really way more refined now, naturalistic in a stylized way. They also seem to have improved the previously-horrid ground textures. It's starting to really look like those painterly sci-fi book covers now.

Great picture. Wasn't expecting so many new touches, Graphically. The game is beautiful!

I mentioned this in the OT, but when pirates attacked me post-update, suddenly the NPC Korvax ships around me started attacking them. I've been in plenty of pirate fights with this game, but I'd never seen NPCs help me out before.

If this is indeed a new feature in the update, then it would be a small start towards fleshing out the Faction system into something that's actually significant and meaningful.
I had this happen too. First I saw them fighting amongst themselves, then I joined in on the fight, attacking the targeted ships. When that was over, I was beckoned to the freighter to see the captain.

If these are the little narratives that pop up with this patch... holy fucking shit.

I had this happen, too. Two pirate fighters attacked me and then an entire Vy'keen battlefleet showed up. Needless to say, I barely needed to recharge my shields after that... I kind of feel like it'd be an insult to fights to call it a fight.

I do need to think about getting a better ship, though. How is the smart way of doing that, again? Transmission towers, accept the new ship and strip it for parts if it's worse, or strip your current ship for parts and accept the new one if better?

I kind of think I should get all the resources needed for the Warp Reactors and store it in my base so I can rebuild those once I get a final ship.

Also the resources are much more integrated. Emeril etc actually looks like streaks of ore within the rock now. Downside is you can't easily spot some of them anymore. Btw Does copper still float? So far I've only seen it in the ground peaking out.

Almost feels like a new game now. And it was only a "minor" update! Funny how the usual naysayers have either turned around or disappeared completely. And drive-by shitposting is usually pretty quickly addressed.

The turnaround of public opinion may be much quicker than any of us expected.

Yeah on PC I was really surprised by the jump. I only got the game on BF but initial impressions were the "look" was okay but sadly not hitting what I'd hoped.

Post patch it's been very different. Truly lush worlds, great colours and much better "shapes" for terrain.

Very pleasantly surprised.

I think i encountered a weird rendering bug .

Was in space , near a set of debris. A fleet show up.. that a few minutes afterawrd get attacked. Fight was fantastic i land on the ship to get my prize and then there is this weird blur effect that get activated at all times and my Fps seemed to cut in half.
i Managed to get rid of the effect by teleporting to my home base and coming back.

So weird

no, my position is consistent, it's just that there's not much else to say. They misrepresented the game more blatantly than I can recall any other in history and I think the og vanilla game was a turd, but I'm still curious to see how it develops and hopeful the game will eventually become good because the original promise appealed to me from the start. I sold my copy but if the game progresses enough I'd consider getting it again.

Is it just creative mode or can you actually scan a planet and be no where near it, I haven't played normal since updating but scanned a planet from 1 million away in creative

It'll wear off, trust me.

The game is great for the first 2 hours, until you realize that you're just going to repeat those 2 hours over and over because nothing ever changes after that.

The update is definitely nice, but this game still has a while to go before being a great game.

As of now it's just neat, but nothing more to me. At least they're making progress and didn't leave it to die.

The update sounds promising, really glad to read so many positive experiences.

Will give it a couple more updates to see how it goes and will then take the plunge I think.

Can't help but feel like "2 hours" is a bit hyperbolic. I barely scratched the surface with 2 hours. I got to about 50 hours and started to feel the grind only then. Feel like I got my money's worth out of it by then though.

I think this is a good first step but I really feel this game needs to have more social interactivity, even if it's just some algorithm that makes it more likely for you to come across someone else's planet.

The changes aren't enough to make me come back to the game or sway my opinion of Sean. Not quite sure why you felt the need to be fractious when - by your own admission - detractors like myself were content with leaving the thread to those enjoying the game and foundation update.

I an many others played well beyond 2 hours and still enjoy it.

I think this is a good first step but I really feel this game needs to have more social interactivity, even if it's just some algorithm that makes it more likely for you to come across someone else's planet.

If you were subtly pushed into finding people's planets it wouldn't make it as special when you finally do. I want it to be the rarest thing and therefore the most special. I don't want the sense of vast isolation to disappear from No Man's Sky.

Then there's the bigger, almost unspoken change that's been ushered in with the Foundation update. This is an entirely new universe, the algorithms that dictate what you come across on your travels tweaked to ensure more diversity, more strangeness and more believable planet scapes. It means everything that's gone before it has been torn up and tossed aside, but the sacrifice seems worth it. Some planets are entirely uninhabited, the odd feeling in the original version of coming across the same settlements on each surface ironed out as buildings are now more sparse. It makes for a tougher, lonelier game, even away from the all-new survival mode - resources are now more scarce and have to be sought out on different planets rather than all being clustered together - but it makes for a more beautiful game, too.

Skimming over the surface of a planet submerged in water with the occasional sprawling landmass, all pink grass softened by a radiant sky, was enough to make me fall in love with No Man's Sky again. Disembarking, I find myself in what seems like a small copse, until disturbingly the trees begin to move, clambering back to reveal a creature larger than anything I'd encountered in my previous 40 hours with the game. Maybe it's something that's always been possible, or maybe it's a result of those new algorithms - either way, it's nice to have an excuse to go back in and make fresh discoveries.

I love the sound of this.

I'm enjoying the game alot more in survival mode, since it actually gives you good reason to travel across the surface of a planet on foot, with the higher cost of taking off, and the fact that you actually have to worry about running out of stuff to keep you alive, it feels much more adventurous

Is it always possible to survival in survival mode, or do unfavorable starting conditions potentially make it impossible?

I've seen that exact creature a bunch of times, including that animation. I don't think they've done anything to the flora and fauna in this patch except increase the size limit a little and allow for more creatures.

i think they've done more than that. definitely seeing more large critters, more herds. saw a predator hunting herbivores yesterday. way more creatures on-screen at once. i pulled up my visor at one point and freaked out because there were life-sign dots everywhere. i was surrounded by tiny brain crab things i could barely see.

Hmm, well the first one I started it was too much, I really couldn't make it. It was a radioactive planet but I just couldn't find the materials to keep my life support online, it was frustrating. I had to RUN out of my little base, try to find what I could, then run back before my protections went offline.

But I started a new one and it was much better.

I think its always *possible* to survive, but that doesn't make it fun or viable, my advice, try it and if your first planet is too stupidly difficult, try again. Scanner is your best friend when starting in survival mode, fix it first.

Spend ca. an hour setting up shop on a stormy lush planet. Ocean view included and riiiiight next to a worm whole.

Figured instead of searching for that perfect planet I can already do all those little fetch quests to get the blueprints. Especially the ones now needed to mine some of the resources.
The extra storage options are appreciated as well.

Won't go to deep/decorative until I find really the perfect base spot. Mostly need iron so next time I can build the base super fast.

actually - i think you get all your shit back when you move bases. so no worries about even farming iron. i haven't done it yet though. my first base planet turned out to be pretty damn good.

Yeah I saw that console for the resources of the previous base. Could also mean the resources you store in the storage containers though. As those would be lost I guess unless transferred to a freighter etc. before.
I would also like to know if the previous build bases just disappear.

The one change I wish they'd make is making it so even turning on/off v-sync required rebooting the game in the PC version. It's such a pain in the ass to try and find the right mix of pretty/performance and having to restart it every time. Took me about 30 minutes or so.

Wow, thats so cool, what's the limit on base heights and size anyway?

Are all planets changed? Or are planets we've already been to locked to the old ways? I've been wondering how they might try to both improve things without breaking what's already there.

Exactly the same here. They're pearls so I'd think they're supposed to be underwater but I just don't seem to be able to find them.

There needs to be proper diving equipment with upgradeable propulsion because swimming isn't fun and I always avoid it.

I don't know if all places are the same but that's already as high as it would let me build it.
The long hallway is about half the diameter for the build-able area (basically the green grass area).

That could make for some pretty massive structures if you used all of it :0

yeah i wish they'd tweak swimming. let me at least tread water to get air back. i mean, i've got a spacesuit. roll the air supply into life support where it belongs and change the O2 upgrade into some kind of aqua mobility upgrade.

oooh - give me a buildable version of those things divers use where they hang onto a little propulsion unit-light.

and a buggy that transforms into a submarine.

and a space pony
