Overwatch wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2016

it's funny how Uncharted 4 didn't even win Action\Adventure game since the series is known for it's amazing action, but if you played Uncharted 4 you will realize that it's no longer an action game like the 3 previous games in the series, it's a walking\climbing simulator with a bit of action

your overrated studio that Gaf worships, lost 2 awards against a game that is exactly the same as the first one(Dishonored 2) and a MP only game( Overwatch)

Thank you Blizzards for making the greatest MP game of all time

good on the guys who decided Overwatch's win, no room for overrated games, we had enough of TLOU

I wish I cared for multiplayer only shooters. I feel so out of the loop with this game. I played the beta and it was alright, but nothing to keep me coming back to it. Just an unfulfilling thing to me.

For how its taken over gaming its deserved, but I would have liked to see any of the other nominees win personally, as I've played and beat the other 4.

Worst gameplay, no story.

Games have come to an end.

The fact that a game with minimal story won is a good thing. This is retribution for Witcher 3 winning 900 GOTY awards while everyone talked about how boring its combat was in the same breath.

Let me get this straight, Blizzard make a sexualised version of Team Fortress 2, and enjoy and profit of the porn and sexulisation of their female characters... And they win GOTY??

SMH

I don't really love Overwatch but I can 100% understand it's popularity and critical success. Can't really argue against it being GOTY although I personally would've gone for DOOM or Titanfall 2.

Congrats Blizzard.

A Team Fortress 2 reskin would GOTY?

Congrats to Valve, they're still managing to innovate the industry even if they don't release any games.

Is this some sort of epic meme

When you got Hitman,Doom and Uncharted 4 on the table..@$!# ass anime lookin fps gm gets the prize..@$!# lol.

Your opinions on games means jack shit if you're going to dismiss one for being "anime lookin".

Yes, they enjoy porn and sexualisation of their characters so much that they issue DMCA takedown notices to people responsible for them.

Fucking hell, I respect people thinking it's not deserving of GOTY because they don't think it's as fun as some other game(s), but some of the arguments you guys are making are irrelevant at best, and fucking stupid at worst. Overwatch is enjoyed by a huge number of people, is still being updated with new content for free (the only paid content is aesthetic skins, which are entirely optional), and many of the people playing it have put in hundreds of hours. Maybe you personally don't like it, but is it so hard to comprehend how such a game could win GOTY?

Congrats to Blizzard I suppose. They took the world by storm (once more). Haven't even played it yet, but all I hear is praise (well, most of the time) so they must be doing something right!

Well it got my vote, granted the only other games I played in the category was Doom and Titanfall 2 but I highly doubt Uncharted would have swayed my vote.

Overwatch is fucking outstanding, is still being updated with new content for free (the only paid content is aesthetic skins, which are entirely optional) and has plenty of people playing and loving it, many of which have put in hundreds of hours.

How many people have played Hitman, Doom, or Uncharted 4 for hundreds of hours?

Played Uncharted 4 for hundreds of hours. Uncharted 4 is still getting free updates.

Seriously, are those your criteria for GOTY?

Good game but was the last game this year I would think deserve game of the year. Especially since this year has been such a strong year for games.

Let's hope this is the one time a multiplayer only game gets game of the year or else the industry is going to go down the shitter in terms of original ideas.

Did ND/UC4 kill your puppies?

Congrats to Overwatch.

As someone who played UC1-3, loved 2, and found some of the stuff in 3 silly enough to make a thread talking about it, and who has no PS4 and hence have not played UC4, I find all this shade really weird. Like, why are people so vindictive? It's fucking Uncharted, how different can 4 be to make people this mad at it. Lol.

Well deserved, personally fallen away from it but great to see this kind of game win. It's really taken the industry by storm. It's the one game I keep hearing get talked about on various podcasts etc.

All of the games deserved to be recognised, really been a great year for games I I.

maybe... just maybe... they also do not own a PS4..

I have the game and got bored of it after a week or so.

It basically highlights lots of bad things about "gaming" (dumb character designs, waifus, microtransactions for random rewards) while doing nothing new (it's a TFC copy at its heart).

I don't get it.

I know this is highly subjective but even if we're looking at multiplayer shooters, I think Titanfall 2 and Gears 4 are both better in every way and have campaigns.

It also has great gameplay, unlike U4 MP. Something that is pretty important.

UC4 multiplayer actually has level design and choices in its gameplay, unlike Overwatch's two teams going in a straight line and smashing their heads together.

Far more fun and interesting to play.

Deserved, the most fun game this year and that's what it should be all about.

Uncharted is great but I wouldn't give them 1st spot even if it's just for that awful tall grass stealth mechanic which is beyond dumb.

As this you celebrating Overwatch's win over UC4?

Sure sounds like it...Damn.

Overwatch is an outstanding game that has managed to completely engage millions of people in a sustained fashion by virtue of good design and good support. It's a goddamn masterclass in how to produce a product people want.

Say what you will about Blizzard being a "me too, but better" company, but they usually are actually better. Overwatch is not just better than most, it's become a standard. You remember when the term "WoW killer" became ubiquitous? Same shit will go on in regard to OW for some time. Opinions aside, when your game is the go-to for comparisons in a genre, you have won.

That doesn't seem to be it from the sort of shade being thrown at it in this thread. Almost feels a bit like MGSV backlash. Which is weird to me, since I don't think UC is as different?! Maybe I'm wrong?

I wouldn't really agree with that months ago. However, that new Arcade update just rocks so much. The new 3v3 and 1v1 offer much variety from the base game. On top of that the weekly free chest when won number of games just kept pulling me back into it. Just Awesome.

My fav game so far this year is Uncharted 4 but I'm glad Overwatch won simply because their was more at stake with that game. it shows a message that a game can be mp only and still be worth a purchase, a developer shouldn't be forced to include sp just like they shouldn't be forced to include mp.

I have my issues with multiplayer only game with so little content winning GOTY, but more power to the fans.
It's not a bad game and I always come back for few weeks when new content is added, but definitely not a GOTY, that would be Xanadu Next.

I think it's just AAA fatigue. Uncharted 4 basically does nothing new in terms of what it offers to the gaming landscape.

It also might not be super evident because it doesn't really come up much but I think I've always seen a weird sort of animosity between people who are primarily single-player people and people who are primarily multiplayer people. I've seen the former not really "get," the latter and think only games with strong narratives can progress the medium, and I've seen the latter accuse the former of basically wasting money on disposable products that they forget about a year later and fail to really delve into any game mechanically at a level other than surface-deep. Both of these are huge generalizations that aren't really true for most people who play video games, but I've seen both attitudes expressed before and I think we're really seeing them bubble up here because this is the first time a game focused so heavily on multiplayer has won GotY from a large outlet, at least in a very long time.

I'd argue it was largely the same as before really, and that's why I found the boundless praise upon launch rather ridiculous

Man, some of you guys are getting overly defensive over your favorite game here. It's the VGA's, who gives a shit who won. A new IP being this successful is a great thing.

It really is strange... I like UC4.. one of the best games for me this year. Overwatch is fun game.. but nowhere near as polished and fun as some other releases this year..

Seeing people come in here and say that Overwatch is "still getting free updates and only cosmetic DLC", is just so strange.. UC4 is also getting free updates and the DLC is (as far as I know) only cosmetic..? so why does one game do it better than the other..? Didn't Overwatch get some complains about it taking to long to release new stuff? and that stupid long ARG had a lot of people pissed.. but still it gets praised for the updates..?

It's a far more contained story with a lot less "Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap!" moments (though it still has quite a few, and memorable too IMO) and it's also slower paced (the first half ). So some people weren't quite happy with it as they wanted far more dare devil moments like in 1, 2 and 3.

They introduced a lot of stuff used in TLOU (stealth being the BIG one) but since they were kinda tied down the standards of the previous 3 games (which had stealth moments, but not full on stealth mechanics) it was kinda half-assed. By that I mean, it wanted to do proper stealth and at points if felt like some levels were meant for it, but given there were no silent weapons (besides melee)+ hiding spots (besides cover) were always tall grass.... it always felt off. You can also do full on stealth+pacifist levels (some, not all, and even then just sections of said levels as the game requires you to fight a lot because plot) but it requires kinda cheating the game at points, abusing the detection stages and that sort of stuff.

Then there was the actual story, which I guess didn't sit well with everyone. I like it, it was a fitting farewell to the characters IMO and perhaps the best ending the characters themselves wanted, but it definitely had a lot more "serious" moments (per say) than previous games, which embraced the cheese with open arms (to good effect!). So you know, long time fans felt they got something different than what they were expecting given the series standards. And they did, though I don't think it was necessarily all bad.

It's a good game with flaws, I wouldn't give it GOTY either, but I wouldn't dare call it bad. The gameplay is the best it's ever been in the entire franchise, for sure.

You know, even if a better example exists, it's alright to say something's good.

Guys this game puts gameplay first. Runs at a locked 60 and looks great. This should be gafs goat.

I've been playing this game every day since it released. It would be pretty daft for me to say it isn't my goty.

Well deserved blizz

blah blah dumb youtuber tries to be game designer

Overwatch lacks objectives, pick ups. There's no choice where to go. You go find the enemy and shoot.

Go play Unreal Tournament or the good ol' arena shooters and see how level design really works. Heck, you can even play League of Legends and see it done beautifully.

Don't be a dick extra credits isn't a dumb YouTuber I'm pretty sure he's a game designer and regardless I know many game developers that watch his stuff.

Also overwatch isn't ut the things it lacks in comparison doesn't make it a worse game. It would be like me sitting here sayng unreal is worse because it doesn't have characters each with unique movesets abilities and gameplay.

Because for many people the core gameplay loop of Overwatch is simply sublime. The act of playing the game is so fundamentally enjoyable that the flaws don't detract from the experience. For me, personally, I haven't been this engrossed in a shooter for the actual gameplay as opposed to the level up grind of a CoD since Unreal Tournament.
