Would've picked DOOM but Overwatch is really deserving. It held our attention for such a long time while other games on the list only held it for a month or less. A true game of the year is one that keeps itself around all year. The other games on that list simply didn't do that. Uncharted 4 fell off into irrelevance very quickly for a ND game. And as someone who loved Doom, it too went into irrelevance after a month. Titanfall can't really be looked at from this angle yet since it's only been less than a month. Inside held its ground, though. Overwatch stayed in the spotlight and never left, and won't for years.

It simply deserved it.

going in by yourself you generally dont coordinate well with others or the others don't coordinate will with you.

This is a team game first and foremost and it is much better when you play it with a group of friends.

Uncharted was just slightly above average for me. It had everything, the graphics, the performances, the action, etc but the pacing was so damn bad at times and there was way too much mindless traversal. It was kind of disappointing for me. The set pieces weren't as good as U2 and 3 either.

Forgive my ignorance but bar possibly the Pharah skin (the name of which I can't remember)...what in Overwatch is "offensive" in that way?
 
Overwatch actually represents different peoples with its really diverse cast. I think that's a really cool part about it. We have a black Brazilian, Chinese, Korean, Indian, Egyptians and you get very little representation of these ethnicities in video games. Its not really appropriating anything.

I don't understand why you're exempting Pharrah, the devs don't even know the difference between Egyptian and Native American. To them it's some brown person in an exotic cool looking dress, which is the definition of cultual appropriation.

I wasn't trying to exempt Pharah, I just couldn't think of any other examples off the top of my head. Sorry if I worded it that way :/
 
Battleborn was robbed.

Seriously though, I enjoyed Overwatch but it just didn't have the lasting gameplay appeal that Battleborn did for me.

Congrats to Blizzard though, it's been a year of tough competition for that top spot.
 
Awarding Game of the Year 2016 to Overwatch is like awarding Game of the Year 1994 to Street Racer.

It's a TF-clone, MOBA which had a giant marketing push and loyal Blizzard fanbase. Nothing more.

It absolutely boils my blood that it gets critical and commercial recognition over R6 Siege.

Siege actually revolutionizes the genre, but you need to play it to understand how, yet trying to get friends and peers (outside GAF) to play the damn thing is a met with dismissive cynicism.

I believe that poster is alluding to things like the Pharah Native American skin. I think stuff like that is tacky personally, but it's not egregious.

They also apparently don't know the difference between a Swede and a Scottish dwarf. But I guess any blond and beardy man will do.

First off, that's not cultural opprpriation.

Second, why isn't pharah of native descent in that skin? Symmetra has one where she's white for a vampire (and one where she's blue but you know, that's a little out there).

From the top of my head, Roadhog has some pacific islander ones that are problematic.
Symmetra has the Hindu Goddess ones, but I don't consider them to be problematic, she's Indian, after all.
 
I really wish I enjoyed Overwatch more than I actually do, I gave up on it pretty quickly. Still a cool game though.

Yeah, same for me. For someone who's never been into FPSes on the Multiplayer side much I have had so much fun with it. 140ish hours.550+ wins and so on, my fun with it has lasted far longer than I expected it would.

If Persona 5 had come out this year that could have stolen it but the wait in EU goes on.

No.. Blizzard fan boys didn't make Overwatch big as it is. The game itself appealed to many non-Blizzard fans. And the game isn't a MOBA. Stop calling it that.

Can you explain the mutual exclusion in knowing the difference and it not affecting their decision to implement their designs anyway?

Dude chill out they're just fun costumes. Pretty sure Blizzard just thinks of something cool first then implementing. Overwatch has some of the best diverse cast in video games

Yeah, it's the first Blizzard game I've bought in my life (not the first one I've played though, a friend lent me WarCraft II and StarCraft back in the day but that's it).
I'm not even into FPS usually and certainly not multiplayer games... but I've been having a blast with two of my buddies for the past weeks. GOTY for me, first FPS multiplayer game I'm addicted to, after having tried tons of them.
