What is it?
A VR Zombie shooter for Vive and Rift with touch.

Why should I care?
  • It has a full campaign of 4+ hours, as well as a replayable horde mode.
  • Both modes can be played either in single-player or in online coop (2 players for the campaign, 4 for the horde mode).
The campaign coop is a major reason I am excited about the game.
  • It seems to have pretty good production values, and it's neither a shooting gallery, nor a minigame, nor in early access.
  • Impressions seem good so far, see below.

My memories of playing the game feel more like I visited this place and vividly recall getting lost in the mines, scared for my life. In this way, it’s much more than just a simple video game. By crafting a full campaign mode that lasts several hours, Arizona Sunshine effectively transports you to this other world in such a convincing way that you feel what your character feels much more so than you would in any other traditional game.

Playing the campaign in multiplayer offers the exact same experience, but increases the difficulty in just as many ways as it decreases it. While you have a second pair of guns and pair of eyes in the world, you don’t have twice as much ammo to go around, forcing you to share and ration out each stash. The dark levels also require immense teamwork as only person is afforded the use of the flashlight. You better trust whoever you’ve asked to watch your back.

  • They released a "VR trailer", which is basically a non-interactive executable with two premade sequences. Somewhat novel, and not a bad idea given the differences between seeing something on screen and in VR. There are 360° videos of both sequences, which obviously lose the positional tracking, scale, and some fidelity.
  • First person gameplay trailer. Standard "you can't really show a VR game in a first person trailer" rules apply.

And some minor tech talk to make this is a Durante thread
  • I didn't find it specified anywhere obvious, but this is clearly a Unity 5 game based on the files included in the "VR trailer". That means that getting good IQ at 90 FPS is unlikely to be a significant issue, compared to some other larger games based on previous versions of the Unreal engine.
  • Funnily enough this game appears to be sponsored by Intel! While I doubt the effects shown in this trailer are impossible on an i5, anything that gets Intel to throw money at VR devs is a good thing in my book.

So ready for this. Wish my friends had VR too. :(
I'm really lucky in that the friend I mostly play coop games with was impressed enough after trying my Vive around launch to also order one.

Not too much coop stuff out there yet, but Raw Data and QuiVR are great fun.

The game looks pretty good and seems more fleshed out than other VR offerings. Glad to see it's not just a shooting gallery.

On another note I don't think I've ever seen Joshua trees and saguaros in the same area before. Dumb nitpick, I know.

In on this one. Just not sure which platform I'll be buying it for yet.
Is there any reason not to buy it on Steam? Even before getting into general Steam features (or the hopefully not necessary refund policy), that version supports both VR APIs, the other one doesn't.

(Edit: actually, a reason not to buy it on Steam, at least mine, is to buy it on GMG for less money :P -- though that's a tradeoff which kills the refund option)

Too much blood for me to play, especially considering this is in VR. Shame, because I've been clamoring for higher-production-value VR games that feel like complete experiences.

I just noticed an error in the OP. I wrote:

Obviously I meant "Unreal" there in the last sentence rather than "Unity" (referring to the fact that Unreal got a VR forward renderer only very recently).

A polished motion-controlled VR game that isn't Early Access is pretty much inherently appealing to me. I'll have to try this out at some point.

Can't wait to pick this up when I get paid on friday. Its looking like just what I wanted from a VR game. Been playing alot of the Doom3 BFG VR mod since I want longer single player experiences and this seems to be doing just that!

I'm definitely grabbing this in the inevitable shitload of cash I spend on VR games today. Looks fun as heck, love seeing the campaign playable with another player!

Heh, sorry :D
Quite excited for that one. It sure looks a lot like Dead Island which I really liked.
Aw man I really want a good Dead Island (VR) game. Not that parcour open world crap :(

This looks so damn good. Unfortunately I'm so damn broke (house repairs from hurricane damage, new A.C. being installed)...but soon, soooooo I shall slay zombies in VR with the best of em

If I can score some Oculus Touch controllers at Best Buy tomorrow, I'll grab this. Otherwise gotta wait until they're available...somewhere.

Any impressions on Vive vs Rift versions? I haven't been able to get my Rift to work well with Steam VR, so if the Rift version is good enough I'll buy on the Oculus store as I much prefer the comfort and setup of Rift/Touch vs Vive right now.

Are Oculus and SteamVR versions compatible with multiplayer together?

Oculus Home is such a better experience than SteamVR so I'd prefer to get the Home version since I have a Rift.

I checked out the "VR Trailer" since I missed that the first time. Very cool! I hope more devs consider doing something like that. I'll admit though, I got pretty terrified. I hope there's not a whole lot of levels where you play in the dark with only the flashlight. :P

Maybe for Native Oculus support and not through the SteamVR Wrapper?
I really hope i can decide which API i want use. Space Pirate Trainer does this and it is great.
The SteamVR Version of SPT just does not work for me without Tracking issues. And i honestly don´t know why

But besides that, i hope the Game will be good

27 dollars?

It's 24 British Pounds for me (I do not live in the UK):

27.29 euros. I don't know the USD price, but it's probably similar.

Going by the icons on the store page, the Steam version should have native Oculus support.
(Unlike some other company, Valve doesn't prevent people from using any API on their store :P)

GMG now provides the Steam keys for the game - the deals (both on Steam and GMG) should still run for 3 or 4 hours.

You get VIP prices if you have an account there - so it's just an incentive for you to create an account. I think they have just lowered the price even more, now its 20 pounds. Weird. I'm glad I did not buy it yet, but now I probably will.

I am certain that it was 24 pounds before, 20 now.

I won't be playing it before tomorrow or maybe even Thursday since i want to do so in coop and it's not always easy to schedule ;)

I'm downloading it now. The is one of the first VR games that I've felt looked good enough to justify it's price. Hope it doesn't disappoint!

Looks like the checkpoints are far apart.
just got kicked back to the bridge from messing around and getting killed by a surprise zombie at the start of the mine.

I said I wouldn't play until tomorrow, but I couldn't resist giving it a short try.

Performance and settings look good, nice to see a VR game with large levels and good quality dynamic shadows (at 4 cascades). Also, the detail on the vegetation is surprisingly high, and the wind effects look awesome on the ... I have no idea what they are called, the somewhat tree-like deserty things.

In terms of gameplay, everything seems quite polished so far. And ammo is scarce even in single-player!

Can't wait to try this out!

Online co-op is a huge plus, since the friend I primarily play with recently picked up a Vive.

I'm so fucked if there's a zombie apocalypse. I wasted so many bullets, aiming is hard. Online was a lot of fun, some of the player animations gave me a good laugh. Matchmaking also seems a little flakey right now. I was only able to find one lobby with 3 people after many failed attempts.

I want to be excited about this game but it looks like another zombie wave shooter no? I understand it has a story, etc but ultimately the gameplay seems to be stand shoot and move on but esentially the same thing we've seen in raw data, etc. REALLY getting sick of these wave based shooters. Tell me I'm wrong on this one.

From what little I played of the campaign it's just wave based shooting with walking parts inbetween.

edit: Lot of crashes.
