It appears Super Mario Run will require an internet connection at all times

But it doesn't mean it doesn't, either. Your logic cuts both ways. The fact that other people have made games marginally similar to SMR that do not require persistent online really has nothing at all to do with SMR. We don't even know exactly what "social features" means with regard to SMR; "social features" does not mean the same thing in every game.

Well what social features could SMR have that other games don't have that requires SMR to be always online?

Leaderboards, multiplayer, ghosts, unlocks etc. are all available without making your game always online.

Ties to player's optional MyNintendo accounts (which they will probably hint at heavily or push once or twice in the early game) may also factor in to the persistent online. idk though. this doesnt matter to me much until it's out on Android. It concerns me more as an investor, but not too worried

I already mentioned persistent chat. What else could it have? I don't know, why don't we wait and see instead of going all Chicken Little and assuming the big meanies at Nintendo are just out to rob us of our fun?

That isn't needed to be always online either. At best Nintendo is making some online features mandatory while gimping their overall product leading many people to become dissatisfied with the end result. Doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

I'm just going "chicken little" because my reason to download the game was completely snuffed out lol

Literally the only time I play iOS games is on airplanes. This is a huge disappointment.

If I had Internet, I'd be juggling Twitter, e-mail, Slack, and GAF. Games are for when I don't have Internet

Wait does the game have microtransactions because that's the only way this makes sense, even if this is a $10 game.

This is beyond stupid. Like others said the only one who'l be effected by this is paying customers. Even if the game comes to Android as long as an internet connection is required I'm not buying it.

Wonder how severe the always online aspect is.

I've been playing Hill Climb Racing 2 and the way it seems to just throw you back to the main menu, no progress saved, for absolutely no good reason whatsoever if your connection cuts for even a second or two is fucking frustrating. If it's like that, I'm gonna have to skip.

e: oh it's 10 bucks? I don't think I'm gonna pay for an always online game

Oh please. If your reason to download the game was predicated on playing it offline, you must not download very many mobile games to begin with. As I've said, many of them do require persistent connectivity... especially newer ones. One thing the games you mentioned share in common is that most of them are five years old or older.

Anyway, I'm going to wait and see rather than assuming the sky is falling based on incomplete information.

I'm not assuming the sky is falling, I'm assuming there's no reason for me to personally purchase this.

And you're right I don't play mobile games often, but being newer still isn't a valid excuse as to why always online is needed.

I like Nintendo games and I thought it would be a fun platformer to play on my various commutes. Guess it wasn't meant to be.

Lots of people in here only play mobile games on planes or in hospitals, I guess.
If I'm at home I'm going to be using my console or pc 99% of the time.

If I'm driving I can't use my phone.

If I'm on a subway I don't have internet.

If I'm on a plane I don't have Internet.

If I'm at work I don't have the free time to play a game.

Additionally I'm a student who has to pay for his own phone bill so I try to go easy on my data and not use it when I don't need to.

How is this so hard to understand for some people?

I wish for anyone that has complained in this thread to bump it when they actually experience a significant usability issue due to the online requirement. See you never.

Hello there! :)

I already have. I have a limited data cap and I also work retail in a store with garbage internet. It's definitely not convenient to bring my 3ds or vita since I wont have anywhere safe to put it, So I usually rely on my phone for entertainment in these cases. When the data runs out, finding out the games you paid money for (Stay far, far, away from FFIII on mobile devices). isn't working is never any fun at all. I make it a policy to never keep, let alone buy games that are online only unless they offer gameplay in a unique way I cant quite get anywhere else. Unfortunately, It seems like I'm skipping this particular Mario game.

I'm out.
I feared this might be the case but was holding out hope it wouldn't be the case because of Nintendo, but alas.

Guess not. But that doesn't mean the game doesn't have any valid reasons for requiring internet.

Whenever something requires an internet connection, everyone on NeoGAF is a train commuter who spends all their time underground.

?

People take mobile devices places where they don't have network access and they expect their games to continue working unless it's a online multiplayer game.

Subways, Subway stations, airplanes, long road trips.

jesus christ. Don't leave home much, do you?

You could try reading the thread, or even the page you're currently posting on.

Is the mobile reception situation in the US really that bad?

There's rarely ever a situation when my phone has no reception, let alone it happening JUST at the time I happen to want to play one of the 20 or so mobile games on my phone.

Hopefully this is a big deal and people don't buy the game and Nintendo moves away from mobile and just focuses on the Switch.

For you.
Personally my reason to download it is to have fun, which is certainly not snuffed out. What is yours?

A bit hard to have fun if you can't boot game, i'd say.

I already mentioned persistent chat. What else could it have? I don't know, why don't we wait and see instead of going all Chicken Little and assuming the big meanies at Nintendo are just out to rob us of our fun?
Unless the game has magically became a MMORPG when I wasn't looking, there are exactly zero reasons it needs to be always online.

Over two fucking hundred paid mobile games here. Not a single one has prevented me from booting them offline.

I'm on Verizon and have pretty much no Internet connection at all on the NYC subway system, in addition the train I take in to the city goes under a tunnel and I lose connection for about 2-3 minutes.

Then there's also the problem of airplanes and data limits. Also my iPad doesn't have data at all but to be fair I barely use it.

Makes the entire game near useless for me then, because I was looking forward to playing this on my iPad mini while commuting.

For fuck's sake Nintendo.

A. I live in the rural US, like millions of people. I leave the town I live in, even Verizon goes away or is reduced to 1x.
B. I barely have any data, because I can only afford the smallest data plan. Sorry not everyone has unlimited data. I keep 4g off unless I absolutely need to turn it on, because I will run through it in a day (not exaggerating).
C. There is a chance of a server crash, especially when one first buys the game. Wouldn't be the first time it happened, and then you're shit out of luck for who knows how long.
D. Regardless of whether it impacts you or not, one must realize this is a stupidly anti consumer move that should never be encouraged.

Make sense?

A iPad mini while commuting? Oh man, i'm sorry to say, but according to the real genius below, you have severe life issues
I suppose so, considering you're experiencing considerable life issues at that point.

hopefully there's more to it than that... there must be an offline mode? there's no way i can guarantee i'll always have an internet connection while playing

Nintendo protecting their IP.
Might be a good idea for games on Switch as well, seeing as most Nintendo consoles get hacked pretty quickly.
Good one, I almost thought that you were serious.
