It appears Super Mario Run will require an internet connection at all times

almost every subterranean subway in NYC doesnt cut off 3g/4g connections. also dont plenty of airlines have free wifi now?

Uh... no. Actually, I challenge you to find a single one that HAS free wi-fi, besides for people that sleep more inside an airplane than in their own bed, aka Platinum customers.

It's mobile, no surprises. I dont believe there's a ftp game out there that doesn't. I doubt it will be a huge data muncher.

I play mobile stuff on wireless-only iPad. Basically none of my paid games require an internet connection, and I have a *lot*. This is pretty shit but I can't say I'm surprised by the defense force.

Pokemon go: free and GPS is used so 3g/4g made sense

Super Mario Run: not free, 3g/4g mandatory doesnt make sense.

im not saying the reasoning for the constant online is the same, jesus, just that the prevailing issue with pokemon go was battery drain, not data. People still played it a ton, and many still do

So you cant' be killed by running into the goombas and it will always require an Internet connection?

Nintendo being Nintendo.

It is a free download with a paid unlock. You are going to have to be online to at least make that purchase.

The issue is once you make that purchae you still need to be online.

It's ridiculous that a company that has always has awful online support for their games that need it is requiring always on line for a game that doesn't need it at all.

Yeah, it's so easy to dismiss arguments by declaring people as being part of a defense force.

Fuck having reasoned arguments where we can understand where people are coming from and let's just throw condescending remarks at each other like a bunch of five year olds.

Neither of these are true in my experience and I fly multiple times a year and live right outside NYC.

I use the subway very infrequently despite living in manhattan, but last time I was on the Q, the L, 4/5/6, F or E trains I was surprised to find that my data didnt cut off. Maybe it's a Verizon thing?

also concerning the vaulting over goombas, this game treats them as points where you can vault for extra height if you time the tap correctly. other more substantial enemy types will halt your run/force retry i believe

hmm

I didn't know there were so many passionate mobile phone gamers here.

Surely that means you've experienced having to play at least one game that required an internet connection like say... Terra Battle?

Oh man this sucks. I was looking forward to this since I'm not able to find the NES classic. Nintendo makes it difficult to play their games don't they? Like others on here, I was hoping to have this for the commute to work every day but no internet signal in the subway means that wont be happening :(

I guess I save $10 this way. I'm not much of an iOS/Android gamer regardless, but I was going to make an exception for this. Not anymore though.

For you.

What arguments? There are no justification to not have a offline mode for the game. This is not really a discussion.

Bad idea but a few people played Pokémon GO this summer even though it needed an internet connection so I think Super Mario Run will survive this "riot" :p

Wow did they just kill their game before it even hit? Upsetting.

This is Nintendo we are talking about here.

Mario Maker 3DS could be the best 3DS game ever made? Cannot upload levels you just made.

Super Mario Runner could be the best mobile runner ever made? Cannot play while subway commute.

Trust Nintendo to f*** this up. Seemed too good to be true.

Remember people flipped over XBO needing to connect once every 24 hours? Here you need an always-on connection to even play! I only really play mobile games on my train journeys which either have the worst or no connection for most of the journey...how am I supposed to play on them?

A status customer would have complimentary wifi.

That's pretty shit. It's always nice to have some games which can be played without data. You don't always have data, especially when travelling to other countries where data costs and arm and a leg.

I know that when I'm abroad the only thing that I want to do is play Super Mario Run™.

Why. Why would that possibly be a deal breaker.

Definitely. I don't expect this to sell more than 30 million downloads now. Such a shame.

also multi-quote is a thing

Nice try.

The game has features that require an online connection. I bet if this was a game from an indie studio, nobody would even notice.

Nice try? You get mad at people for throwing around condescending remarks yet you did the same thing on the previous page lol

And as previously mentioned, those features have been done BY INDIE GAMES without requiring always online.

You've yet to provide anything. To make it worse, you've been the one with the condescending behavior since your very first post.

So if Nintendo decides to end the service for whatever reason (like other developers have done in the past), the game would become unplayable?

You will stop caring about playing this game long, long before that happens. If you want this to be the reason that you don't play it at all, go ahead.

Not really understanding all the rage and hand-wringing. There are a ton of games on my phone already that require me to be online. Most of Square-Enix's games including stuff like Final Fantasy Record Keeper won't launch if I'm offline. There are others as well.

Yet I didn't see any angry posts about it then. Hm.

That's a bummer. Probably won't end up grabbing this, then - most of my time playing games on my phone is away from wifi, and I'd rather not use up my data excessively.
