It appears Super Mario Run will require an internet connection at all times

This isn't a problem at all imo, everyone has access to mobile data and wifi... so what is the problem lol?

You wouldn't have a phone without mobile data, that's just silly...

No doubt. This is one of the most active SMR thread's I've seen. So much concern for a game that's on a device that is online ~100% of the time for most consumers.
For a 10 dollar mobile game, It better be offline playable. There's very few mobile games at that are at that pricepoint and the ones that are I expect to play offline because like others sometimes my connection isn't as good as it can be or I may want to play it when I am out of a connection area but for the price I will not buy it at that price for an online only mobile game.

some might just be complaining for the sake of it, but personally I haven't commented in most of the other threads because I was waiting to see how it turned out.

I was likely going to buy it day 1 to play at work, but now that is out so nintendo won't get any money from me until it goes on like a 90% off sale as I have better games to play at home where is the only place I could regularly play this.
Exactly. I maybe posted once in the first Super Mario Run thread but I don't keep regular track of it until I saw this thread and it went from a day one to when it's on a big sale price. I am glad they got this information out.

Well, thought I'd post my quick impressions instead of the "LOL I JUST SAVED MYSELF $10" shit-posting like the last 11 pages. I swear, some of you are so.. I don't even know what the word is. It's beyond entitled. Yes, maybe this isn't ideal for everyone, but it won't affect most people most of the time, and I don't see why this would be a deal-breaker for such an excellent game (especially a Mario game @ $10). Unless some of you LIVE on a plane, they won't prevent you from enjoying the game in almost all situations.
The only thing entitled is the posters like you saying that we should just accept this. The game may be great but for the price they are asking than it's not worth it when you can only play it with a connection.

Haha. My eyes are rolling to the moon at some of those posts.

Anyway, thanks for the quick impressions. I'm real excited to have this on my phone.
Smh posts like yours really are embarrassing.

The game is £8, $10.

You can play it at any other time you have a connection and still enjoy it. The game is supposed to be superb.

A superb game is a superb game so play it when you can, home or away.

There is no stipulation that says that because it is mobile then it must be played on a commute. If it's such a good game then play when you get home just like your console games.

EDIT: Splatoon is coming to Switch. It's a multiplayer game. Will you be angry because you can't play it on your commute without an internet connection?? Or will you just play it at home? Because the same applies to Super Mario Run.

Just suck it up and play the game, connection or not!

What the hell?

I ride metrorail every day in DC with spotty connectivity. That's about an hour a day total, the time when I do most of my mobile gaming.

On top of that I'm not using monthly data for a single player game.

Great job, Nintendo.

Pass.

Baseline expectations for hardware/data usage on the platform is not entitlement.
Seriously doubt checking uses much data. It's not downloading shit. It's pinging to a server. Those are minimal.

That's going to be horrible news for my daughter.

She has an iPad and spends multiple hours in the car on the weekends I have her, so that rules it out for those trips.

How can anyone be ok with this? It's a fucking running simulator for chrisstsake. This is intrusive DRM for a paid mobile game. I was gonna buy this but now? No way.

People who commute underground. I take the subway everyday to work and 90% of the trip doesn't have any phone signal at all.

This is a game I was looking forward to playing on my commute, but it doesn't like that will be possible now. I'll still buy it, but I'm annoyed because there is no reason for it to require an internet connection.

Also anyone who wants to play it on a plane will be unable to do so.

This is two different things. It doesn't apply Splatoon still can be played without an internet connection or at least the Wii-U version could be. If you want to play it multplayer than of course you need a connection.

There's no sort of choice here with Super Mario Run and yes for the price on a mobile game. you better believe I want a choice.

...hate me...
For the iPhone, Super Mario Run plays on:

iPhone 5C, 5S, SE, 6, 6S, 7 (and the Plus variants). Are people using these advanced phones without a data plan in their own country? Maybe.
Does it really support the 5C but not the 5? How?

Splatoon also has a single player mode that you can totally play with zero internet connection. Try harder.

Did you read any of the posts about people with no connection or a spotty connection while commuting? That's when a lot of people play mobile games.

God forbid people expect what they pay for.

If I pay for a game, I expect to be able to play it with no restriction-- that includes the demand of constant connectivity. Internet connections go down. Cellular service doesn't have 100% coverage. My cellular data plan isn't unlimited, nor is my home internet access.

If a game is free to play, I am willing to accept restrictions if I download it. That includes constant connectivity.

Super Mario Run is a premium game purchase at $10 that I would have easily made, but it violates my expectations. I may try the free portion, but will never pay for it as long as the requirement for connectivity remains.

And, yeah: If I buy a cheeseburger at a restaurant and order it a certain way, you're damned right that I will march right back to the counter and demand another if it's not made to my specification. I don't make a scene, but I do make it clear that the food that I paid was unacceptable.

The post I quoted was "Overreaction: The Thread."

That's, uh, still going on here.

I really think you can do it, GAF!

I really believe that you can exhibit the modest amount of baseline intellectual maturity and subtlety required to understand that this will be no problem for some people and a significant problem for others. You can do it. You can do it!

Well looks like I'll never get to play it then. I do most of my mobile gaming in the subway on my way to work. Hopefully they'll remove it.

Remember Sonic Runners? Yeah that game. That game has closed its servers and the game is now unplayable.

Nintendo are asking $8 for a game that may not work 3 years from now.

Pair of jokers.

I'm completely ok with this, because I know the price is a steal for the quality of the game and the hours of enjoyment it will provide, based on my time with it.

According to this thread, you are:

(a) a liar, or
(b) confused about your own circumstances, or
(c) an idiot, or
(d) all of the above.

Take your pick!

Uh, how many people are playing the same game (especially a mobile game) 3 YEARS after purchase? I'd say a tiny, tiny minority. So yeah, not that outrageous, even given your hypothetical, fictional scenario which has no chance of coming to pass unless Nintendo goes completely out of business . Some of you are reaching really, really hard to try and pretend this game is "overpriced". That's the joke.

Bro you just posted how magnificent the game is, if it really is as good as you're saying, of course it's possible I could want to play it even years later.

Though with Nintendo the chances of them shutting down the servers so soon is probably close to zero.

So to answer the question who plays games in flight mode: Those of us who actually fly.

Today I learned that the only time people ever play mobile games is when on an underground tube with no internet connection

I don't know how you can be so glib. This is quite literally the only mobile game in existence, period. There will be nothing else to play in that tube. Lives have been ruined.

It's possible you are also (e) beyond entitled or have (f) considerable life issues

Yes. Pointing out one's disappointment that one won't be able to play (or get much use out of) a game that one was looking forward to = entitlement and/or considerable life issues. That's very plausible! You sound like a very reasonable person and probably one that is fun to be with in real life!

Guess it depends how it works, if it's going to boot you out when your connection drops that would be crazy, if it just pings the server or whatever when you start the game up I don't see that as big of a deal.

So you're ok spending $10 on something that stops working in a couple years when the appeal to me is singleplayer?

A company can shut down servers without going out of business.

Yeah let's just see how it works.

Being how unreliable mobile connections can be I doubt it will be constantly battering it. More like a quick ping in between games/levels.

If you are worried about a mobile game not working 3 years from now you might never buy one to begin with.

Nintendo has nothing to with Sonic Runners or how Sega handles their mobile games - so what the point of this comparison ?

I doubt I was ever going to buy it but, IMO if you can create a game without restrictions that keep it from being used most conveniently, you probably should. I would be interested to know why this title in particular has to have them.

I'll buy it and put it on my wifi iPad, but, weird I'll need to tether it through my phone if I want to play like on a commute or in a place w/o wifi.

It's hilarious to see people policing others' disappointment, questioning their motives, and so forth.

I have owned every Nintendo console since I got the NES in 1986. The only system I play these days is the 3DS. I am about as dedicated a Nintendo consumer as one could expect from a grown-ass adult.

But having this game online-always is total drag. As someone who (a) does 80%+ of his gaming while commuting and (b) spends just about his entire commute without mobile or WiFi access, this makes the game borderline unplayable to me. And until learning this news last night, I was anticipating that I would dump countless hours into this game. So it's a huge disappointment.

If you have a different setup and different needs, then it might not affect you at all. And that's great! Maybe you don't play games while commuting. Or maybe you commute on the bus, above-ground. Or maybe you do all of your gaming at home. That's great. But for those of us with different arrangements, this can be a complete ruiner. No need to question our motives. (Never change, GAF!)

Well said.

Not everyone has a smartphone + (well working, fast enough, etc.) internet connection everywhere they go (like abroad or on the road in general). I think games need to stop enforcing this, console games as well as mobile games for that matter, and at least offer a (stripped down, if necessary) offline mode. Not everyone is as fortunate or wealthy so no need to attack those that are bummed out by this instead of attacking the companies who keep making it harder and harder for some to keep up.

Modestly disappointed that your favorite restaurant is moving to another part of the city, meaning you'll less often be able to dine there?

This thread: "There are other restaurants near you! And why not just take the extra 20 minutes to go out and eat if you like it so much? Why are you so entitled?!!?"

***

A little sad that you were planning to go to the park today, but it's raining?

This thread: "There's nothing to complain about! Do something else instead! Or go in the rain! I love being in the rain anyway so I don't even know what the problem is lol. Who doesn't own rain gear? You're just complaining to complain."

***

No longer interested in buying a particular food processor after learning that it comes with two fewer blades than you believed?

This thread: "LOL lots of food processors only have that many blades! You're not going to use those extra blades anyway; no one uses them! What entitles you to those blades?"

-Yeah, it's great!

-Great?! You have to be online to play, I'm not going to buy that. Nintendo is for kids anyway. *cries internally*

This sums it up for me and my situation. The majority of my play time was going to be while commuting ... on the subway...

Huge bummer. I'll still give it a try as it looks quite fun and polished. But my ability to put more time into it has been a bit neutered.

Well, i take the subway everyday to work for about 30-40 minutes and when i'm in the subway, there's no Wifi and no reception so for me Mario Run would be unplayable.

And not everyone has access to mobile data, it costs money and not everyone pays for it and Wifi, well there's no Wifi when you walk and change places all the time.

Hopefully, Nintendo patches an offline mode because i'm not getting the game.

You don't understand, it seems... hacked versions are never online for obvious reasons and people will obviously pirate the game within days. They're not doing it specifically to avoid this feature but as an overall necessity.

Yes, I understand that, but what I'm saying is, are they rewriting the game logic to cut out the online checkpoints so the user can get into and out of a level without checking in online?

It's a mobile game, so I kinda expected this.

Most my mobile games don't require internet. Tbf though I haven't really bought many mobile games for the past few years (once I got a relevant console again. I went a while just gaming on my phone before I got a ps3 cheap a few years back).
