It appears Super Mario Run will require an internet connection at all times

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
I live in a really bad signal area (signal is especially shite when on trains) so yeah this pretty much rules it out for me

I know this feeling. At home I had to use wifi for my Vita or any mobile game. Could barely use my mobile phone for calls, had to have a house phone. Using my phone in the house for calls I had to be in specific areas.

Playing games out n about was like a scavenger hunt for a signal if I needed one.
I moved and even know....its hit or miss in the house with mobile data.

I get tired of playing the 'which service works the best in my area' game. Add to that some phones just dont work as good as others and it can become a real issue.

My point still stands, some of the complainers I've seen in this thread haven't been in the other Super Mario Run threads, so I'm wondering if there's just a little bit of Nintendo hate going on which has caused this thread to span 14 pages already.

I'm surprised there were even people that wanted to play this game. All I remember were people shitting on it en masse when it was revealed because it was:

1) A mobile game
2) An Auto-runner

It's even happening here with people hearing for the first time being baffled that you don't get killed by goombas but that was known a month ago with a video which showed you don't need to jump to avoid them. And hell there were even impressions from media like IGN that got to try the game back when it was revealed in September that would have said that you don't have to do anything to avoid getting hit by goombas.

Luckily, the rules driving Super Mario Run are simple, and it’s built to be played in portrait view on your smartphone. Mario automatically runs across the screen from left to right, but he’s also smart enough to hurdle over small ledges and shorter enemies.

No doubt. This is one of the most active SMR thread's I've seen. So much concern for a game that's on a device that is online ~100% of the time for most consumers.

Oh, is there a pirate version that's better?

No, didn't think so.

Yes, there will be - one that doesn't require internet access. Its typical, consumer gets punished with this shite while the problem people don't have to deal with it.

Would you say you're an expert?

What ?

I know since I'm Parisian myself .

Nintendo is very popular in France.

And many Parisians tend to play mobile games while traveling in the metro, where there's no internet .

So it was a really poor decision , at least from a Paris point of view .

So people will hack the game and disable the feature and then float it on some fake app store?

These people aren't going to get that any time soon, if that's the case.

For the iPhone, Super Mario Run plays on:

iPhone 5C, 5S, SE, 6, 6S, 7 (and the Plus variants). Are people using these advanced phones without a data plan in their own country? Maybe.

I love Nintendo and was really looking forward to playing this on my commute. A one handed Mario that doesn't require microtransactions sounded perfect. Now I find out that it won't work in the subway. I understand their piracy concerns, but it's blocking me from buying it. 3DS is still great and switch will be amazing I'm sure, but it bums me out that their mobile games won't be good for me.

I shouldn't have to post in a circlejerk news thread to express my disappointment. I saw the initial reveal, and considered buying it. Now that I know I wouldn't even be able to play it when it's convenient for me, I'm just not going to get it. Pretty sure this is true for a lot of others too.

This isn't Nintendo hate, it's people discussing the negative points of Nintendo's DRM. You'll see what you want to see.

got a 5c here.
and a very small data plan, only to be used in emergency situations.

some might just be complaining for the sake of it, but personally I haven't commented in most of the other threads because I was waiting to see how it turned out.

I was likely going to buy it day 1 to play at work, but now that is out so nintendo won't get any money from me until it goes on like a 90% off sale as I have better games to play at home where is the only place I could regularly play this.

here we go again with the "lost" sales.

Would you care to elaborate, because lost sales are an issue. May not effect a big behemoth like Nintendo, but it sure does affect day to day mobile developers trying to make a living. On one forum i post on, a supposed dev says that for every one sale of his game, it was pirated 10'000 times. (Put that in context of Super Mario Run, that is £80,000 a sale)

Piracy is a real thing. It not some fictional made up story. Online DRM may not be the best way to go, but it is something that needs combating.

I'll save this post for the inevitable crow.

They are lost sales plain and simple.

Right, right. You convinced me there.

edit: i would elaborate, but my experience is everyone is very fixed in their views concerning this. you believe what you want to believe. In the end, DRM is what it is and ultimately a disservice to the consumer.

lol

The only reason I was interested in this game was so I'd have something to play during downtime at work where I get no internet connection.

"If you want to play Mario on a plane, we have a product for that. It's called the Nintendo 3DS" - Miyamoto

The thing is endless runners on mobile by design aren't always online. Maybe, the game actually lets you play as a Goomba or a Koopa, one with the goal to stop a Mario from reaching his goal. This all ties in with Dark Souls on Switch, Nintendo inspired by their invasion mechanic.

In all seriousness it must be nice if you're connected to the internet 24/7, but in reality, not everyone is. People will #dealwithit in their own ways: some will buy it, some will skip it, others will pirate the inevitable offline version. It's Nintendo's call. In the end, they'll reap what they sow.

I get that this sucks for the single player mode, but here's a question:

Does anyone own any mobile title that includes online multiplayer which doesn't have to always be online?

Hopefully they can work around this for the single player mode.

Just caught wind of this and I can safely say that it doesn't bother me at all. Unless I'm on a plane, my iPhone always has some kind of internet connection. I really don't think this will impact their sales all that much.

Who uses airplane mode besides on airplanes? This isn't a big deal at all.

Well, it means I'll be skipping it, since 90% of my playtime for this type of stuff is in buses/subway/etc and my iPad is Wifi only.

Today I learned that the only time people ever play mobile games is when on an underground tube with no internet connection

You're being sarcastic but this is absolutely the case for me, yes. Mobile games are merely a distraction on my way to and from work, that's it.

You can quote me on that later if you really must, I'll be more impressed than surprised if people are doing that to games just so they don't have to be online. Seems like an awful lot of leg work.

I don't have it installed anymore so I can't check right now, but I'm pretty sure that Sonic Dash 2 : Sonic Boom was playable offline, despite having a separate online mode with leaderboards and all.

This isn't a dealbreaker for anyone. You guys mean to tell me you somehow use a smart phone for anything besides connectivity?

You don't understand, it seems... hacked versions are never online for obvious reasons and people will obviously pirate the game within days. They're not doing it specifically to avoid this feature but as an overall necessity.

Ah, gotcha. I personally haven't seen any games with online that don't require a constant connection, but it's good to know there are some. Hopefully they change their decision for the single player mode, as it sounds purely like DRM right now.

Maturity, bitches.
Not damage control.

But being realistic.

As I said in the page before, I'm a daily London Underground commuter, yet this hasn't prevented me from pouring 100's of hours into the online only Clash Royale.

I've been playing Love Live School Idol Fes and Cindy Gals Starlight Stage for over a year/two years now, both of which require internet connection, so I'm not new to the concept.

However both of those are stamina based f2p titles, so I'm not even going to be playing them much while on the move since I don't spend money on them. They're not commute games.

Mario Run on the other hand would have been a nice game to play when I'm out and about. I don't have a great data plan and free wifi isn't that great in London. When at home I'll probably find myself playing my other Mario titles. Basically I only saw myself really getting this as a backup title if I didn't have my 3DS on me.

It's disappointing, but I'll live.

This isn't a dealbreaker for anyone. You guys mean to tell me you somehow use a smart phone for anything besides connectivity?
I use one to call people. How 19th century of me.

Well, my smart phone is an android device. Have an iPad for apple exclusives but it's wifi only. Besides me there's all the people who already posted who'd be playing during commute but cannot due to lack of signal.

It's a dealbreaker for quite a bit a people on this thread, it seems.

Well, thought I'd post my quick impressions instead of the "LOL I JUST SAVED MYSELF $10" shit-posting like the last 11 pages. I swear, some of you are so.. I don't even know what the word is. It's beyond entitled. Yes, maybe this isn't ideal for everyone, but it won't affect most people most of the time, and I don't see why this would be a deal-breaker for such an excellent game (especially a Mario game @ $10). Unless some of you LIVE on a plane, they won't prevent you from enjoying the game in almost all situations.

Played through to the 1st castle:

- Looks gorgeous, colorful, and super smooth
- Extremely repsonsive. Always jumped exactly when I wanted him to
- Level design seems to be fantastic so far. A lot of alternate routes
- Difficulty ramps up pretty well. Non-goomba enemies need to be stomped
- It FEELS like a Mario game. The fact that he runs automatically kind of fades away and becomes less relevant. It's all about timing, same as any Mario game.

Never been so excited about an iPhone game. I've played HUNDREDS, and some fantastic ones, but this one has instantly jumped to the top of the pack based on my 10 min of play. Can't wait to progress through. Nintendo has a massive hit on their hands and I hope this does super well for them. I would definitely pay IAP for more worlds in the future, ie. $0.99 each.

What the hell?

I ride metrorail every day in DC with spotty connectivity. That's about an hour a day total, the time when I do most of my mobile gaming.

On top of that I'm not using monthly data for a single player game.

Great job, Nintendo.

Pass.

I swear, some of you are so.. I don't even know what the word is. It's beyond entitled.

Baseline expectations for hardware/data usage on the platform is not entitlement.

Haha. My eyes are rolling to the moon at some of those posts.

Anyway, thanks for the quick impressions. I'm real excited to have this on my phone.

That's dumb. I'll be ok Nintendo if I can't see leaderboards and the like. Went from day one, to whenever I feel like it now.

Was really liking the idea too, but I do a lot of traveling and eating my data is a no go.

I think the reason it's always online is because the coins you collect in single player are used to buy stuff in multiplayer.

It's hilarious to see people policing others' disappointment, questioning their motives, and so forth.

I have owned every Nintendo console since I got the NES in 1986. The only system I play these days is the 3DS. I am about as dedicated a Nintendo consumer as one could expect from a grown-ass adult.

But having this game online-always is total drag. As someone who (a) does 80%+ of his gaming while commuting and (b) spends just about his entire commute without mobile or WiFi access, this makes the game borderline unplayable to me. And until learning this news last night, I was anticipating that I would dump countless hours into this game. So it's a huge disappointment.

If you have a different setup and different needs, then it might not affect you at all. And that's great! Maybe you don't play games while commuting. Or maybe you commute on the bus, above-ground. Or maybe you do all of your gaming at home. That's great. But for those of us with different arrangements, this can be a complete ruiner. No need to question our motives. (Never change, GAF!)
