It's not anti piracy, it's anti cheat. By forcing the app to connect whenever any scores or other things are counted/sent, it prevents people from building memory altering cheat programs.
But who cares? Because of leaderboards? There is no major competitive aspect.
It is because of microtransactions is why, so they want to prevent cheating so you can't hack your way to getting whatever you want, it is so you pay to get whatever you want.
Don't most major public transits have wi-fi? I know Amtrak does. This seems like it might be a minor inconvenience for some people, but it really isn't a big deal.

Ok, you beat me. I don't get this reference.

Miitomo downloaded a SHITLOAD of data, though. Like, insultingly more than it should. Plus, the pre-load is 9MB. There's no way that's everything. That means the game, just like Miitomo, has updates that it handles itself inside the app.

??
There are no microtransactions though... Also one of the game modes is all about 1 on 1 multiplayer...
I assumed it had microtransactions because pretty much all mobile games do. Is there confirmation there isn't?

Some people have commutes that spend a lot of time in tunnels or have to take plane flights frequently for work. Some areas of the country also just have bad coverage in general.Do people not have 3G on their phones? The ability to go online at any time is the biggest feature of smartphones to me.

Really this thread is just these two groups of people arguing whether this is a big deal. I spend 90% of my life in areas blanketed by wifi and none of my time underground or in a Faraday cage, so to me it feels like a total non-issue.Some people have commutes that spend a lot of time in tunnels or have to take plane flights frequently for work. I could imagine how this might suck for people with spottier cell coverage, but I just have a hard time believing that this is a large portion of cell phone gamers in this day and age.
Basically, it's a big deal to some people, but in the grand scheme of things, I don't think it is
Let's revisit this in a year or two when Nintendo decide to shut off the servers to force you to buy Super Mario Run 2, and suddenly your $10 game is broken.

3G isn't perfect everywhere. Around here it's pretty spotty at times so it's really painful for a paid mobile game to be online-only, basically means I'd only get to play it at home or work.Do people not have 3G on their phones? I'm not going to be worried about $10 I spent 2-3 years ago.
It's like the virtual console was built for you then.I'm not going to be worried about $10 I spent 2-3 years ago.

Can't believe this is still a "news" in 2016. Even more unbelievable is there are people who complain about this for a mobile game.
It's like complaining about an Xbox One game in 2016 to have online multiplayer only and no split screen.
Email and messages come in and get sent when you have a connection, making them perfectly fine to use when your connection is spotty. This presumably stops you from playing when it can't get a signal.I cant imagine in this day and age not being available for Whatsapp, push mail and others for any relevant parts of my day, feel really bad for people out there. Thought otherwise with Pokemon Go being such a runaway success.
I guess its a privilege thing. I have cheap unlimited 4G, the game could stream in real time for all I care.
Is it the 15th already? Cannot wait!

I can promise you it's a problem for the millions of people who play games on their phone in New York City.

Yeah, who cares about money or ownership of something you paid for, right? Gotta keep consuming!
It's a mobile phone game. I'll most likely be done with SMR after two months. But you do you and worry about if the iPhone game will be available years from now.
Why? What part of 2016 makes it OK to release a single player always-online game, or remove local multiplayer? Can't believe this is still a "news" in 2016. Even more unbelievable is there are people who complain about this for a mobile game.

Pfft, why are you so entitled? It's only $10, can't you just play another game? Who cares if the game you paid for doesn't work, it does for me, so stop whining. Also, you should be grateful that Nintendo is even giving you the chance to buy this.Wow, some of these people here live in their little bubbles. Not everyone has access to internet at all times, and not everyone has the data to use for a mostly single player game.
