It appears Super Mario Run will require an internet connection at all times

Kind of a deal breaker for me. I mostly play phone games on the metro where my internet connection cuts out. I was hoping since you can outright buy it, it would be offline compatible.

I keep forgetting how many people in the world, and specifically in the US, don't have a proper mobile data plan while buying high-end devices. In France you can easily get 20GB/month for 10€. We're lucky.

Obviously always-online becomes a non-issue in this case.

I hope it's internet connection requirement is front and center so the millions that want to play games on the NYC train system don't bother with this game.

"We wanted to be able to leverage that network connection with all three of the [Super Mario Run] modes to keep all of the modes functioning together and offering the game in a way that keeps the software secure."

the fuck does that even mean?

"We care more about stopping the minor amount of piracy on iOS (less than a fraction of a percent) than giving you the freedom to play your game without an internet connection."

I work deep in mobile. This has been my experience with them constantly.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
Remember Sonic Runners? Yeah that game. That game has closed its servers and the game is now unplayable.

Nintendo are asking $8 for a game that may not work 3 years from now.

Pair of jokers.

Good point. I mean gaming on PC and console it has happened but mobile....the entry price is smaller but still.

Uh, how many people are playing the same game (especially a mobile game) 3 YEARS after purchase? I'd say a tiny, tiny minority. So yeah, not that outrageous, even given your hypothetical, fictional scenario which has no chance of coming to pass unless Nintendo goes completely out of business . Some of you are reaching really, really hard to try and pretend this game is "overpriced". That's the joke.

Me and I believe many others out there.

I still play HR Battle 3D to this day. I still fire up Angry Birds. Plants vs Zombies.
(Made a mistake earlier about HR battle. It still has an offline mode but its crippled because any IAP you made are locked out of offline mode. Cant remember about any gold balls you won and used for purchases.)

Just like using an app I paid for if its updated and still available and usable, of course I still play it years later.

How do we know that folks like me and him are in the minority? Many of us got smartphones in 2009, 2010. As long as the game is updated... And one reason I still play older games is the size of newer games has gone up drastically.
I just dont have the space like I want. Between games and apps they have gotten fatter.

And someone mentioned earlier about who has a phone with no data plan? Some of us with kids that wanna give them a cheap mobile gaming device with as lil cost as possible. Get a phone off eBay, use wifi while in the house. When I was in between jobs I did this. Someone gave me a phone and the place I was staying had wifi. Or I could use it while in school before and after class.

I'm looking through my iPhone games and not a single one requires a network connection at any point after install.

Oh, so at least there's a good reason for this -

Oh. Never mind, it's just another company deciding to screw over its regular consumers to combat a relatively-negligible amount of piracy. Good, good. Carry on as usual, then.

It's such a damn shame, this could have been a good game and I would have almost certainly picked it up, but now I have no interest whatsoever. What's the point if I can't play it on the bus?

Why wouldn't you be able to play it on the bus?

If you have 4g you can play it?

I don't understand the issue?

Our phones have internet access all the time?

My bus commute goes through areas that I do not have a stable internet connection during, and besides that I would rather not use up my rather small data plan, which I keep primarily for emergencies.

We don't know how much data this spends, it's likely a neglectable amount.

This. Needing a constant connection is unrealistic for me. I lost connection multiple times during my commute.

Where do you live where you have Internet access all the time?

First part doesn't make a lot of sense (because I don't know how the game works), but the second is basically anti-piracy.

How it will likely work is that if you lose internet connection during gameplay, but you get it back by the time you finish the level, everything will be fine
Doesn't solve playing in places with no internet at all, though

This seems like a really bad move on their part. The only time I play mobile games (other than Pokemon Go) is when I don't have an internet connection and can't just be surfing the web.

This. Many times during my commute I technically have LTE but no data came come in or out. This game is basically useless I unless I'm playing at home.

There are other ways to deal with piracy.

On par for the course for a lot of mobile apps, not surprising, but disappointing. This is why I stick with Pokemon Shuffle on 3DS, despite the fact I'd rather play on my phone. I mostly want to play on my commute.

I play mobile games in place where I DONT have internet connection, otherwise I would be surfing the internet/Gaf.

:(

I understand Pokemon Go being and online game and all that, but this is freaking Mario!

Seriously, the only times I play mobile games is when I don't have access to the internet. This is dumb. 😑

We don't know how much data this spends, it's likely a neglectable amount.

Miitomo downloaded a SHITLOAD of data, though. Like, insultingly more than it should. Plus, the pre-load is 9MB. There's no way that's everything. That means the game, just like Miitomo, has updates that it handles itself inside the app.

I guess it doesn't really matter to me. I always have a few iOS games loaded on my phone and iPad so if I'm in a situation with no internet I'll just play a different game.

No way I'm paying for this unless they fix it. Almost all my mobile gaming happens in airplane mode (either to spare data plan usage or battery life).

i can see why that sucks for some people, but overall I doubt it will have much of an impact on the success or failure in terms of purchases. If it didn't really hinder the Pokemon Go launch I doubt it will do so here.

Honestly the price tag will probably serve to be the biggest hurdle for mainstream numbers. IIRC 'higher' (relatively speaking) prices on mobile tend to be tough sells.

Play it at home? At work on your break?

Also piracy, particularly on Android is not relatively- negligible. It's Rampant, have a look at some of the figures on the various website. There are games where there is 1 sale to 10,000 pirated downloads. That is not relatively negligible.

Isn't this game hitting iPad? That alone makes the entire 'hurr durr wh cares cuz it's on mobile' argument completely moot.

I don't like playing games on a phone. I have a nice tablet for that.
Yep my iPad doesn't even have data. Fucking genius Nintendo.

Even if you have an unlimited plan you still lose connection in some areas, most notably during commuting which was the main draw of the game for me.

But then again unlimited plans cost a shit load here.

Also some tablets don't have data at all.

It's so when they introduce the gacha system they won't have people complaining that they can no longer play the game on the train.

This is a minor inconvenience for me but I can see how many others will be affected by an always online requirement. Hopefully Nintendo will backpedal on this if enough people raise a stink. I mean, we got DRM removed from the Xbox One so why not here? If you're upset make your voice heard on twitter or write in to Nintendo. I think those are the best ways we as a community can voice our displeasure.

I don't play many mobile games but I remember getting on a plane with my Android tablet about a year ago only to find out that almost all the games I put on it required a network connection. I guess I've expected it from mobile games since then. Sucks for people that are on planes or subways a lot though.

Doubtful this means "always - on" in the way it would mean for consoles/PC. More likely, like pretty much every other mobile game I've played, online is needed at menus but once you get into a level it functions perfectly fine. Not as much of a problem for intermittent connections (lrt) but does prevent airplane gaming.

suddenly everyone turns their data off when playing mobile games, just like suddenly everyone started to hate bezels...
Are people really this ignorant to the notion that people prefer edge-to-edge screens or at least screens that get closer to that goal?

I just got a bezel-less OLED 4K tv, and the lack of a bezel is great.

An equal problem is that an always online game means Nintendo can shut off your game at any point they decide to sunset the game servers. You paid 10 bucks, but next year maybe Super Mario Run 2 comes out and sorry, thanks for playing! Please understand. Or you want to play and heyyy the online check doesn't work because their server is down for maintenance.

I can't believe how many apologists there are for this practice.

'Our' phones being split across different countries, data plans and transport networks (some of which being underground), I think you are casting the net a bit wide to suggest everyone is in the same boat.

Makes you wonder where people live and their daily doings that they never deal with a blackout area.

Even the largest cities on the planet, places that have the best of everything, finding dead zones is common, and forget it if you ever use a subway

Even on the overground part of my commute, there are three black spots that wreck any attempt to play an always-online mobile game.
