Super Mario Run 10M+ downloads Day 1, over $4M revenue, biggest Appstore launch ever.

They will never, ever get Wii + DS sales, again. That people is happy playing on their phones.

It's totally possible. I mean, the Wii wasn't a complete outlier that almost outsold the aggregate sales of every other Nintendo console in history and handhelds are surely not a shrinking market. It's definitely possible!

Wow why does every thread about Nintendo being successful send out some sort of troll bat signal? Why is it so hard to be impressed with the success of this game right now, being the biggest launch in app store history?

2.85 million downloads on day is the biggest launch of the app store? That's it? Is that just for the US or is that worldwide? If I'm not mistaken, don't AAA games easily sell more than that in 1-2 days in a single country?
Mobile games generate mad money because people will keep downloading the game on the long run thanks to, hopefully, favorable word of mouth and a fraction of those people are going to invest into the game buying special currency, unlocks, etc...

Numbers can look small at the beggining but is all about dem legs~

Pokemon GO is a big anomaly, I think, so I don't think is fair to compare any new game on mobile to that one.

Is asking for an Android version considered port-begging? Because I want this on on my phone :(

It's already announced for Android. It will arrive later.

Difference is there is no GameStop shelve space to compete on, there is no used market. AAA games can make A LOT of money in the first week. After that they are in free fall unless their name is GTA or Nintendo.

Both markets have their pros and cons. These numbers for Mario Run are great. Nintendo makes a lot of money (not limitless money like Clash of Clans for example but still good) and people either downplaying this success or shouting for Nintendo to release their games on every hardware from now on are fools.

There's two types of people in this world

People who love Nintendo, and people who love to hate Nintendo

Time to update the OP:

“Super Mario Run,” Nintendo’s first-ever game for the iPhone, has already generated more than $5 million in revenue during the first 24 hours after its release Thursday, according to estimates from mobile app store optimization company Sensory Tower.

The game has also been downloaded more that 5 million times during that time frame, according to Sensory Tower. It is currently leading Apple’s download charts in 80 countries, and is the top-grossing iPhone app in 32 countries.

The beauty of Super Mario Run or any Nintendo game on a mobile device, at some level, is that it is forever on that device.

A kid born today might get his parents to buy it for him 5 years from now. That isn't far fetched.

That's weird logic to me.

I wouldn't not buy a PS4 just because my PC could theoretically house all the games. I don't buy it because I'm either not interested in the library or I'm satisfied with what I have already.

Perhaps that's what you meant? That you don't find value in Nintendo ecosystems since other platforms satisfy well enough

What I'm saying is that while I like Nintendo's games it's becoming harder to justify the cost of yet another box to put under my TV or another handheld to lug around just to play their games on.

What do you mean? you do not think it is connected to Super Mario Run? Please explain.

Just to clarify, when Pokemon Go was released the stock went up mote than 100% in 2 weeks (investors did not understand how much money Nintendo would get from the deal). When Super Mario Run release the Stocks is down almost 9%. To just explain that with "Markets are complicated" seems strange. It is obviously connected to Mario Run so it would be interesting to know what analyst was guessing.

No, Super Mario Run is but one factor in its stock price, it's connected but it's not the only thing affecting the way the stock has been trading since its release. You can't look at a stock price at one point in time or even a day or two and make too many connections about it.

Also, all analysts are guessing. Welcome to the stock market.

Uh no. Apps that don't get updated to recent versions of the iOS APIs eventually get delisted. iOS app backwards compatibility only goes so far.

Above 10% of people who downloads the game buys it. That's a good result Nintendo should be happy about. Hard to say whether one should expect that number to rise or drop. One could argue there might be an inflation of big Mario fans playing on the first day and that they are more likely to purchase the game; at the same time it's also possible that not all owners who do end up buying it do so right away, and that such a thing impacts the percentage positively in the long run.

the real challenge is in the conversion rate imo.

Any bets on how many people make the jump to the full paid version of the game?

Well, it's currently the #1 grossing app in the US.

Thing is, Nintendo's main goal with mobile is to drive awareness of their overall brand. So, to them, I would assume they're quite happy the game is being downloaded, period, as well as users signing up for a My Nintendo account.

Congrats to Nintendo. They've still got it.

Next up: Switch. Gonna' be big.

Yup! This only confirms that Nintendo IPs are still highly recognizable and popular, if they keep up this pace with the Switch and the upcoming themed parks, plus more mobile games, Nintendo could take their sweet spot like they used to enjoy back on the Wii days.

NSMB Wii popped back into the Amazon top 100 yesterday after this launched :-P

Not on Wii U. Wii

But is Nintendo really making any money from those sales? Surely those are copies Amazon had left over in their warehouses. Is Nintendo even manufacturing new copies of NSMB Wii anymore?

There's also this estimate from AppAnnie

http://www.polygon.com/2016/12/16/13985380/super-mario-run-downloads

Super Mario Run is off to a running start with an estimated 3.5 million people downloading the game in the U.S. alone on its first day, according to business intelligence and analyst firm App Annie.

Those downloads in the game’s first 14 hours of availability are surprisingly strong compared to Pokémon Go’s first 24 hours of availability, which saw 4.7 million downloads in the U.S. on Apple devices, an App Annie spokesperson told Polygon.

I started playing a little bit of the game on my sister's iPhone 6 yesterday. We're both hooked. We passed the phone back and forth while waiting for Rogue One to start just to see who could best who in a game of high scores. If this were on Android, I would have bought it in a heartbeat. Super Mario Maker 3DS is a decent compromise all things considered and will hold me over.

Im one of these but this is not the case.

Well the friend codes are just retarded, as always, and now im just scared to see them in Switch.

It's what has avoided me from buying this game because of the online only part. I was already to buy it but for a 10 dollar IOS game that soured me on it especially after playing the first three levels I just can't justify it.

That's a mobile thing. There are other methods of adding people as well. It's merely an alternative to those.

So 5 million dollars, not counting ridiculous in app purchases (which I'm sure is a significant % of it) is ~500,000 sales?

1. Plenty of mobile games use "friend codes". It's completely normal.
2. "Friend codes" aren't the only way to add people in this game. It's one way. It's not the only way.
3. Wii U doesn't use them.

Stop being scared.

It's just a really bad system. I think if Nintendo goes universal account system with the Switch it will help alleviate the conception that it's "just another Nintendo console".

Nintendo seems to be onto a great start showing how a mobile game can help move other forms of the same
IP. Intergratiom with switch and more games to come bodes well for them going forward...

I doubted go having a impact for Pokémon, yet the numbers outside of japan speak for themselves... it's not far fetched mario and animal crossing can do the same.
