Sorry if this is too soon and in bad taste.

So great to see Iwata's strategy for leveraging IP and diversifying their investments work out to such success. I said a while back that it'll be years before we see the full extent of Iwata's plans. Kimishima also said that they're expecting to return to "Nintendo-like profits." They're really just getting started here. New age for Nintendo for sure.

This makes me quite sad. It really looks like Iwata was going to redeem himself in the eyes of sceptical fans had his life not ended so early. Would have loved to see him lead the way into Nintendo's future and see him on stage for the January presentation.

Shit sucks man.

I'd get it, but I'm on peasant Android I guess.
I'm surprised at the lack of Android, but I guess there is some sort of deal going on. That or they don't want the servers to be overloeaded with iOS and Android users...I haven't really followed this game's marketing etc.

Just reinforces that people would love to play Nintendo games, just not on Nintendo's terrible hardware.
That's always been true. The one time they have a 100+ million selling console like the Wii and they begin selling Mario Karts, NSMB, and goddamn Wii Plays at 30 million copies.

Nintendo is the best, most famous videogame company ever but their games are only as successful as their hardware and they suck at hardware.

He has "redeemed" himself really; I honestly doubt all of this was Kimishima's work, the Switch, Pokemon Go, SMR, theme parks, etc were all very much being worked on before he died.

Their hardware is affordable to anyone which definitely does not suck. I know people are jazzed about justifying their PS4 Pro, PSVR, gaming PC, gaming TV purchases, but the market is not theirs in a vacuum.

*Except for all those times they defined gaming hardware

My daughter and I are really enjoying it. I had to pay twenty for it (maybe thirty if wife jumps in) but that's fine. I have paid 60 dollars for console games not getting as much play time as we are putting into this.

$1 is about all it's worth.
Wow, nice burn dude. You got Nintendo there, sick as.

Your $1 price tag might be what you are comfortable with but others are happy to pay $19. This isn't some cheap shitty knock off game, this is a legit full handheld game gone mobile. If $10 is so precious to you then wait for it to go on sale.

Glad to hear it! It's a legitimately fantastic game, and I've been playing it a great deal.

I do hope they kill that online requirement at some point though, it's super annoying in the subway. Would like more levels too!

Mario Kart 8 sold 8 million units, NSMBU sold 5.45 million and goddamn Yoshi's Wooly World sold 1.5 million. Those are numbers most AAA developers would love to see and they happened on a console that only sold around 11 million units. Their games sell well no matter the hardware, because their games are good despite the hardware.

Nintendo games don't go on sale <_<

(It's plenty worth $10 though)

Yeah but his point is that if the Wii U sold well, Mario Kart 8, SMBU and goddamn Yoshi's Wooly World would have sold at least three times what they did. At the very least.

That's also part of why they're doing so many ports on the Switch. These are games that have the potential to sell much more than they did, if it was released on a less dead console.

Nah, tbh I'd rather keep my dollar. Maybe if it weren't always online I would pay a dollar for it.

And no, it's not as good as the full versions of New Super Mario Bros for Wii or Wii U

Wonder how long it'll take to come to android and if i'll still be interested then.

Stole my brother's phone to play yesterday and enjoyed myself, but

Bollocks. Their standpoint with regard to hardware not tallying with your idea of what they should make doesn't make them "shit at hardware". Taking power out of the equation, some of their engineering has been very clever.

Well there's always gonna be someone who doesn't like something. But if you played over a strong wifi connection would you say it was a bad game?

The beauty of Super Mario Run or any Nintendo game on a mobile device, at some level, is that it is forever on that device.

A kid born today might get his parents to buy it for him 5 years from now. That isn't far fetched.

What are you talking about? How is this different from any other mobile game? And since it's an always-online game, what happens if they shut off the servers?

Pokemon GO is a big anomaly, I think

While it's true that few mobile games can have that broad kind of appeal, it is like many others in the fact that it has an in-game currency--purchasable with real money--that can be used to buy consumable items. These games will continue to rule the highest-grossing charts.

Super Mario Run will fall off the highest-grossing chart much more quickly. I'm not knocking it, it's just that people will either buy it or not, and then there is no more reason for anyone to spend money on it. I'm kind of shocked that the game was released in this state, where it's 100% complete and doesn't seem to leave the door open for paid DLC to be added on a regular basis. That's completely the opposite of most mobile games in 2016, especially the popular ones.

Love reading people cheering about leaving behind "pitiful hardware" while playing a game that even in its simplicity had to be dumbed down in controls and structure to fit the hardware. If anything its mobile the "pitiful, overpriced hardware" here.

Hope Switch is a colossal success and they dont need this as a lifejacket anymore.

Where does the 10 millions number come from ? I can't find any source saying that.

Update to the Polygon article:

Update: App Annie sent us a bit more data after this story ran. The company estimates that the game had more than 10 million downloads on Dec. 15 worldwide and brought in more than $4 million. They also noted that the game had 20 million pre-registrations (people who clicked on the Notify button in the app store) prior to its release.

Super Mario Run became the top ranked game by downloads in 60 countries shortly after launch, according to the company.

Have Android so can't comment on the quality. I just hope this success is more deserved than Pokemon GO.
A game that encourages people to play outside and socialize in the world versus an endless runner. Pokémon Go has a lot of flaws, but even with glitches, it still managed to be revolutionary.

These inaccurate descriptions are endless but Super Mario Run ain't.

Its obviously not hurting the sales, plus it's added security. Why wouldn't they do the same thing moving forward?

Because the concept of always-online directly opposes the Switch's play-anywhere concept.

Unless the Switch is a cellular device that requires a monthly subscription with a provider.

If you want my opinion...that would NOT go over well. Also, we've not heard any rumors suggesting it, so it's probably not the case.

The most recognizable video game character of all time has a successful launch right on the heels of the hugely popular mini NES that also features that character.

Shocking...
