Does anyone feel less interested in gaming when Nintendo goes under-powered?

First, there's more to video games than Nintendo.

Second, I don't need power I need good games. And the world is full of those.

Nintendo hasn't been properly powered since the cube era, even then they undercut themselves on what parts made it in to dolphin/gamecube for practicality/profit and pure performance.

I don't play Nintendo games for graphics. If I want super ultra HD 4k 144 Hz there are other options

You do know that 144hz vs 60hz provides a smoother image regardless of the game fps? The irony is with switch on my screens of that nature I get to reduce pixel persistence slightly than looking at the display they give. 4k is another matter though.

What?

In any case Nintendo doesn't realize that hardware improvements help gameplay as much as graphics. Look at the stuff they can do with the world and the physics in Breath of the wild.

If we are being honest Nintendo fell behind in gameplay with the wii. The results weren't noticeable until the wii u which has almost zero classic games made by Nintendo.

One could easily argue that only hardcore games buy Nintendo. PS4 and Xbox are the 2 most mainstream products in existence.

I'll buy the system to play Nintendo games and whatever third party does bring over. The PS4 Pro (and whatever the Scorpio will be) does jack for me, so I really don't care.

The only reason power interests me is because I want third parties to port as many multiplats as they can to Nintendo hardware, and giving developers hardware which is more capable of doing that lowers the barrier for ports.

Beyond that I could not care less if Nintendo stuck with Wii U level power for the next 20 years.

You say Nintendo goes underpowered

I say the others go overpriced

How much do you think a Switch will cost?

Grew up on Nintendo consoles starting with NES in the 80s. Owned all of them in release year, most of the time on release day.

Felt burned by Wii and haven't bought a console since.

I don't need ace graphics, just decent 3rd party support...not "a dozen good titles" with 8 of them being Nintendo

I don't think that the current Nintendo could make a Super Mario World, regardless of the hardware
New Super Mario Bros. U is nearly as good as Super Mario World, and exceeds it in some ways. People just can't past the BAH BAHs and mediocre graphic design. It's a fucking excellent game.

Anyway, I have a PS4 Pro and an Xbox One and a powerful PC and a Vita and I basically just play Splatoon and games on my 3DS so uh, no I guess?

Not me, but Nintendo hasn't been my primary platform since the SNES era.

PC and playstation have long since replaced them as necessary platforms.

I still get there systems because A. I'm an idiot and B. they will put out things I like, but they are not important to my enjoyment of games as a whole

A waste of talent?

I've never heard anyone argue before that Nintendo's talent was rooted in "cutting edge" hardware.

I'm not sure if any of their systems actually ever were the top hardware of their time, in regards to power.

Maybe OP is from another timeline.

Graphical power doesn't mean better games.

Just look how many sequels are being lambasted for being worse than last Gen or the large number of remasters.

I love Nintendo but less than 10% of my gaming time is on Nintendo consoles. Big first party Nintendo games always run great so I'm not worried and I'm definitely not less interested in gaming as a whole.

What lol

No, I buy systems to play exclusives. I have a PC for the other stuff and get it dirt cheap from sales there.

No.

I'm less interested in gaming as a whole when Sony and Microsoft have went this long without a single game (aside from Last Guardian on the PS4) that I feel like I must own. I've completely ignored these two consoles and I could care less about power. Nintendo still makes the games I like to play so I buy Nintendo.

Nintendo and Indies are the only games I'm interested in at all these days.

Nah, as long as they keep making good games I'm fine.
Zelda isn't the most anticipated game of 2017 because it looks cutting edge.

Mario Maker
Smash 4
Mario Kart 8
3D World
NSMBU
Tropical Freeze
Splatooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon

Well optimised Wii U games look and run better than most PS4 games so I don't see it as any sort of issue. I did feel it towards the middle of the Wii cycle when there was a notable difference between HD and SD games.

well not being beefy enough is the reason nintendo became my side-dish. sure i'll eventually buy a switch, when i can find some nice deal.

member that nice first zelda trailer?

By the way, underpowered doesn't mean "oh you're a graphic whore go play pc the hurr durr", it means being just a little futureproofed for supporting the 3d engines too. you know, they move forward and if your machine isn't up to the task...good luck then

My most played gaming device this year is going to be the NES mini and 3DS.
I touch my ps4 to play DarkSouls2/Bloodborne and NoMan'sSky,
my WiiU is a Zelda/MarioMaker machine.

I could give less of a shit if the next system is less powerful than a toaster really.
If anything feels like they have to focus on making the game play well rather than look well.
Then again NMS is one of the games I play on ps4 so that may taint my view...
Also I actually play NMS more than TLOU and Uncharted 4 that are at my disposal, boy why is ND so boring these years.

DS was the best console from Nintendo, and the Wii is easily top 3.

So...no.

Also this by quite the margin too.

Some people would like to see what Nintendo can do on a system that is up there for a change. In a world of frame rates and resolutions, I'm not sure why that's a crazy thought to understand.

Not only that but I don't have the money to blow on multiple consoles, and if I could buy a Nintendo console that not only had the great Nintendo exclusives but also worked to scratch my Online MP itch (and I'm not quite Splatoon's demographic) then I'd be in pig heaven. As things stand my time for gaming is limited and I tend to only want to spend that time gaming with friends. Hence why I have an XB1.

I haven't given a shit about Nintendo games (The lame (imo) mascot stuff) since the N64. The things I enjoy the most from their platforms are the more niche side stuff, like Advanced Wars, Fire emblem, Xenoblade, The Wonderful 101 etc.

The 3DS has a wealth of great games due to it's limited hardware (cheaper cost of development) rather than the other way around.

Some would argue that's pure rethoric, but I do value gameplay over graphics every day! 3DS specs are bad, yet there are games I still enjoy way more than most PS4/XB1 games.

My favorite Playstation and Xbox games are on par with my favorite Nintendo games, it doesn't matter the graphics.

Good graphics is a nice plus. But nothing more than it... a game can be amazing and look stunning, it may also be even better but graphically out dated.

High end graphics are a good way for the performance of a video game to be bloated, and take time away from development where they normally could focus on the fun factor. So no.

I don't like the nickle-and-dime thing they do where you have to buy things like power adapters separately or things like New 3DS where older models couldn't play some games. 3DS also has a hideously cheap and low res screen on it. Likewise the region lock thing was complete bullshit.

I don't mind a less powerful console if it is good to play on and the games made for it run well and there's enough of them for the platform.

Nope. Games like Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, SM 3dworld, have gorgeous artwork that IMO will age much better than some of the 'realistic' stuff being put out by higher end systems. Breath of the Wild is going to still look good 5-10 years from now, just as something like Windwaker did even before they remastered it.

If this thread is on the heels of the running thread about Digital Foundry's report on specs, then I'd say that a machine moderately more powerful than the Wii U at an attractive pricetag is fine by me, because I was perfectly fine with the Wii U from a visual fidelity/performance standpoint. This does make me leery of how much third party support the Switch gets, mainly because of the importance of third party in facilitating mass system sales, but in all honesty the vast majority of third party games I'm getting on PC or PS4. The Switch will be my Nintendo exclusives machine, same as always.

Not at all. Wii U still more engaging game ecosystem right now over the other 2 if you ask me. Nintendo still delivers on their big titles and has some great software on 3DS and Wii U that will never come out on other consoles or PC. Plus their performance and art style is always on point. If anything it's made it easier for me to lean more towards PC + ninty over poor console ports of more tired open world third party copy and pastes.

I am just sick of having to shell out way too much money for the tech level present in these nintendo devices. Withered tech for apple prices.

Me.

Also, anyone who don't care because they think nintendo wouldn't do better games with current gen tech is just crazy.

Such a shame when i read the DF thread this morning..

They were on SNES, N64 and GC era, but the fact that they "downgraded" and still put out quality games just shits on that premise. Nintendo is wasting no talent.

Totally disagree

Didn't have the charm at all

SMBU felt recycled, SMW felt brand new and exciting

Did you play it? You purposely deleted the part of the post that he said it had shitty art direction. It looks like a rehash, but it feels like something else.

What?

These threads always bring the best people, the ones that can be easily proven wrong

I've always wanted to see their first party games running on the most powerful hardware, but I have come to not expect it ever. I know they will be great games but I would be cool to see them on more capable hardware.

I'm much more concerned by the quality of the content Nintendo will put out - both from an "expanding the universe of the games" perspective and from a "fun, challenging, and replayable design" standpoint - than I am about the specs of the system.

2D Mario hasn't felt like a truly challenging or creative series since SMW. NES Classic Edition was a great shot in the arm for giving me a reason to play through the old games again and realize how unsatisfying the new ones are.

Zelda keeps getting bogged down by tacked-on bullshit that detracts from the meat of the game and dilutes the potential for meaningful side content.

Metroid is focusing on all the wrong things lately.

None of this is stuff that consolidating dev for both handheld and console on a single system will fix, none of this is stuff that a more powerful system will fix.

Thankfully, Breath of the Wild gives me hope, Mario Kart and Smash are as good as ever, Pikmin 3 and DKC:TF managed to be great sequels, and Splatoon makes me excited about the future of new IP on Nintendo platforms. But I'll need to see that same attention to The Right Stuff across all their tentpole games before I'm really bullish about Nintendo's fortunes again.

Looking just at the hardware, I'm excited that Switch is trying to light a real fire under the idea of a game console that emphasizes mobility. I think Japan is a forerunner of the rest of the world in terms of how mobility will transform the typical use case for video games, and it's great to see a major console company embracing that trend. I'm not underwhelmed at all by that prospect. I hope it does well; I hope that's where game consoles go in the future.

The Wii and Wii U completely turned me off. I'm pretty much done with Nintendo for now. Interested to see how the Switch turns out. It looks like it could a huge hit. It's just not for me.

lol no

Don't buy Nintendo platforms for third-party games, just like you haven't been buying them for third-party games for a long time now.

I almost prefer Nintendo to keep it this way. The Wii, Wii U and 3DS have all been sobering reminders that graphics aren't everything, and don't need to dominate the conversation the way they do now. As long as the games run well (which Nintendo games usually do), I'm happy.

I'd like to see what Nintendo can do with a genuine supercomputer.

If my video game system fits in my living room, it's too weak for my tastes.
