Overwatch: Reflections comic out [Hanzo cake obsession and Roadhog's circumcision]

I love Overwatch a lot, its probably my GotY but all this shipping talk is quite embarassing honestly.

If this is what the fanbase is really like its actually quite sad.

It's the fanbase of any property with characters in it.

Welcome to the internet.

Nah theres a subset of those losers in each fanbase but Ive never seen it dominate the discussion as thoroughly as it has with Overwatch.

Step 1 - Create a bunch of attractive and likeable characters
Step 2 - Its a Blizzard game, naturally it goes on to sell 20,000,000 copies
Step 3 - Oh no, people won't stop pushing the Reaper and Soldier 76 dolls together and making smooching noises

Overwatch is a good game but it didn't reach its level of gaming culture penetration off its gameplay alone.

Much of it was fueled by people who fell in love with the characters and for whom the game is little more than a vehicle for them to interface with said characters.

Losers eh?

What would you call people obsessing about virtual characters hooking up?

The shipping talk was cute at first in the fanart and OT thread but its been a snowball effect thats gotten out of control.

I like the dynamics and character interactions between the characters but people have taken that and perverted it. Echo chambers are a dangerous thing, a little perspective goes a long way.

Shipping Wars are perfectly fine as long as its just people having fun with the established fiction. Over the top speculations are entertaining in a funny way. It's the people who take it too far and care way too much about it and take it seriously that are really cringeworthy. Overwatch has plenty of those types like everything else.

By people do you mean Blizzard? The community aren't the ones making the Witch Mercy skin or the Widowmaker highlight intro. They also aren't the ones making comics and then saying "oh yeah Torbjorn bangs all the time lmao"

Your on a video game enthusiast forum, don't think your on the high ground to throw stones.

Fans? I mean, have you seen people talk about Harry Potter?

Another great example. I was a huge Harry Potter fan growing up, read all the books several timea but once again I just dont get the shipping talk.

Maybe its just me being overly cynical, I apologize for using the term loser, that was uncalled for.

If the shipping never started this game wouldn't produce nearly as much fan art, and the game as a whole would suffer for it

tbh most people who get into shipping and whatnot are not really serious about it. You occasionally get people who get a little too obsessive with pairings, but the vast majority is only into cute fanart.

If you want to see real salt, go to livejournal or any hyper focused community. Those places can get heated. Anyone remembers when people fought over who Katara should be with?

This stuff just wasn't prevalent in the 2000s. Yeah, we joked about shipping characters and whatnot but we weren't serious about it. Times change and so does fandom interaction now with the importance of sexuality. Some people are really into characters finding love. I'm not but it doesn't bother me as long as the creator isn't being too influenced by fandom decisions.

Man i still laugh about it even now.

Actually some took it way serious then and even earlier (you had stuff like Avatar and School Rumble, etc where there will be many discussions from groups pushing their ship and whatever fallout when the creators actually decide or not decide) but as you said its gotten more serious with the age of representation.

How are echo chambers about shipping dangerous?

Is Overwatch actually a bomb were all ignoring because we're looking at fan art of characters kissing?

You don't remember the great flame wars. Shipping forums raiding other shipping forums. Kamikaze accounts. Fanfiction dot net as a colosseum where there were no victors.

You obviously weren't running in the right fandom circles. This shit's been ingrained in fandom going all the way back to Kirk/Spock.

I was too busy spreading rumors about Goku turning SSJ4 in the school playground than caring about internet flame wars.

You make it sound like the gameplay isn't enough to carry it.

I'd honestly feel less attached to the game without the fandom's incredible output. It's a cycle, I play the game, want to see what cute things people make, seeing the cute stuff makes me want to play the game.

I feel this was the other side of the coin in those days along with versus arguements (aka Goku vs Superman)

Also seeing the uncensored versions with bleeding and shit, then bragging to your friends LOL

Tracer liking girls isn't all that surprising to me. I guess the question now is that the only way she swings? Is she bi? Omnic-human relationships are a thing, maybe she's into that. These are the true issues.

Torb having a large family also isn't that surprising, people always underestimate the engineers.

Thats not what I meant, let me explain.

Example: In the fanart thread shipping talk is rampant to the point it dominates discussion and most of the fans are happy to talk about it. The few who arent comfortable with the discussion will slow down and then eventually stop being a part of that community if they dont like where the discussion is going.

If someone who is curious about that popular Overwatch fanart thread decides to click on it and is greeted by shipping talk are they going to say "HOT DAMN SHIPPING TALK JUST WHAT I WANTED" or "err this doesnt feel right, maybe Overwatch isnt for me and I dont really belong here"

Everyone inside is happy to talk shipping meanwhile an outsider will look in and wonder what the hell is going on.

Not everything is going to be for everyone.

I saw devil mercy with her tits hanging out all the time and stopped visiting for a while cause it got boring. I only came back to see the responses to the comic. Devil mercy's tits are still hanging out as far as I can tell.

That's okay!

There was a lot of TF2 fan stuff. Only difference is it didn't have women.

More then that its just the characters are fun and watching them interact is fun. There's an element of cross cultural stuff in each games along with the more defined relationships in Overwatch. Both games also really lend themselves and embrace the (non-erotic) fan art communities and the like.

Its not like they are deep characters or anything, but its the same feeling you get in a Street Fighter game where you wonder how R. Mika and Zangief would react to each other.

pretty much all the females have some bs reason as to why they're old but look 18

mei is 31 but got frozen for a couple years, mercy has her healing which makes her look young despite being 37, tracer has her timey-wimey stuff and idk the reason behind Sombra being 30

She is heavily augmented.

Sorry for derailing the shipping hate talk (Gency/Emergenji for the win!) along with the Ginny hate but does anyone know why the Overwatch Reddit site is "Not Found"? Or is it just my Internet?
