Overwatch: Reflections comic out [Hanzo cake obsession and Roadhog's circumcision]

Tracer is a safe pick. They'd get more credit for her being queer and on the cover if it actually came up when the game released and you saw Tracer promo materials and not 8 months later, long after the relevance of those promo materials, and mentioned only in a web-only comic book.

And the fact that it's a relatively attractive and feminine female character who kisses another relatively attractive and feminine female character means you avoid upsetting an audience that expects the male gaze to be catered to. If you had a similar scene that ended in giving a gift and a kiss between Junkrat and Roadhog, the reaction from retrograde jackasses would have been off the fucking charts because not only is it addressing queerness in the game but also it gives no sexual satisfaction to members of the straight male audience, unlike doing the same with two very attractive and feminine women.

With this step, they have done The Least They Could Do after having been pestered with questions. If this is a first step in the right direction, great. If Blizzard thinks this is the end and they've done it, then we have a problem.

They 100% didn't pull off the bolded. People pissed themselves on twitter all day and their forums are scorched.

Respect to your post, I really don't think it's all that safe. They're taking heat right now.

I'm just annoyed that Tracer yet again eats up the spotlight. She seems like the most uninteresting character that gets all of the attention. Hell, at least Reaper makes me wonder why he turned.

There isn't such a thing as a safe pick when it comes to minority representation. It doesn't matter how low key, how obvious, how unimportant or important in the game or industry, how theoretically acceptable something of the nature of that should be, there will always, ALWAYS, be a backlash against its minority inclusion.

With the staggering and seemingly limitless player base that blizzard has, their in the unique position to be able to tank whatever hits this results in, but developers will always have to answer for why they gave into the liberal agenda in the eyes of many.

Tracer is the games mascot and Reaper is the cheesiest thing in the game, which the game is very self-aware about.

I agree that Reaper is cheesy. But he still has more personality than Tracer. And this game doesn't need a mascot because it has a huge roster of interesting characters.

For many people Tracer is one of the most interesting characters in the game. People have different opinions on subjective topics!

That kotaku article is terrible. Is it a deliberate piss-take of what right-wingers think social justice people talk about? I'm a gay man and it makes me angry.

There's some good ideas in it, that are worth discussing and looking at, but I think the authors should take a step back and re-read it. It really comes across as incredibly entitled and derogatory.

They're both in a love triangle with hanzo?

Widowmaker has a "let them eat cake" line.

While the male gaze argument still holds weight here, it's naive to think making characters attractive makes their queerness acceptable to homophobes when the new wave of reactionaries have clearly shown they hate women - especially queer women - regardless of their appearance. Often, being typically feminine is just more fuel.

Blizzard making Tracer queer may seem like the safe choice, but I don't think there's such thing as a safe choice at the moment.

I honestly don't think that making the iconic, main character of the years biggest game is that 'safe'. As they have said themselves, Tracer *is* overwatch - she features in more promos and art than any other character.

Personally, I was worried they were going to make Zarya a lesbian, which would have been at the same time both really easy to do and catering to various bad stereotypes as their sole 'LGBT' character.

Let's be honest, how many AAA, potential game of the year contenders have an LGBT character as their main lead and box art cover?

Let's be even more honest - how many AAA potential GOTY contenders have a female character as their main lead?

The comic is fun. Tracer's characterisation and sexuality are good.
Those butthurt comments on the Blizzard forums...
That Onion quality Kotaku panel debate... sigh.

Do we think that the guy in Soldier's picture might be a lover/ex-lover?

Too soon?

Haha.

Seriously tho I could see him and Ana sort of being those two people who everyone thought they would be together at one point, but due to their jobs (and Ana having I assume a boyfriend or husband since Pharah was born), they didn't.

That just sounds really sad. Especially when you take that comic panel into play. Wonder of there is still something there.

Actually, seeing Soldier 76 and Ana just moping in that house reminds me of when Harry and Hermione were depressed after Ron left and they were just laying around listening to the radio.

At least Jack and Ana didn't dance haha.

The shit people who are whining about any inclusion were always going to whine. This is your core "keep politics out of games and also my politics don't count as politics" crew. There are sadly a bunch of them in the gaming scene. Fuck them.

The audience for the male gaze is much bigger than them. There's an audience who doesn't care so much about the queer thing but still at least gets some titilation out of seeing two attractive and feminine women kissing. There'd be more people upset if the gay kiss was Zarya and another butch woman, because there's less there for the straight male audience, and if you made it two dudes kissing it'd frustrate even more people (both because of the total lack of male gaze pandering and how men who are insecure in their own masculinity and sexuality get triggered by depictions of gay men).

If having Tracer as a lesbian is causing such an outrage, I can't imagine how people will react when Blizzard will announce that Mercy is actually trans.

And imagine if the queer character was one of the male characters? The shitstorm would be way bigger.

The Overwatch xxx scene has been so robust for so long the entire cast has been pretty much every sexual orientation/sex for as long as the game has been out. I'm not sure Blizzard could even come close to rivaling the controversial Overwatch content already everywhere online.

Soo.. What's the canonical plot of Overwatch. I get that there are these guys who are in a faction or something... And they fight. But why are they fighting each other?

Is it like Mortal Kombat, where the gameplay makes no sense in regard to the plot (good guys fighting and murdering each other and no one seems to actually die in the canonical events?)
