Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

Is Kentucky Route Zero worth it at 50% off,$12.49?
What about Banished at 66% off,$6.79?

Thank you!

Both are worth it, although one note: Kentucky Route Zero is an episodic game. If you buy it you will get all 5 episodes, but only the first 4 are released so far and they are taking their time. It'll probably be another year or 2 before the 5th episode comes out. And they put the game 50% off on every sale, so if you're going to wait for the last episode to play it, this discount is standard.

Anyone have an opinion about the difference in performance between Deus Ex MD on PC vs PS Pro? I recently bought it for PS4 for something like $16 from BB, but with it down to $20 here, I'm wondering if I should just eat the extra $4. For some reason I recall people saying PC performance was pretty rough (I'm on a 1080, but if the last few months have taught me anything in PC gaming, it's that nothing is a given.)

Are you planning on playing all of those in time for the Summer sale? If not, I would consider buying just one or two then waiting for subsequent price drops.

If anything, they will get more expensive with time.
FF7 and 8 used to be routinely 75% off, then the discounts slipped to 66%, now everything is 50% or less.

So...

Ethan Carter for $3.29
Virginia for $6.29
Abzu for $6.59
Firewatch $13.19
Inside for $13.85
Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishment for $16.49

Do these all seem like good deals?

I mean, what do you consider a good deal? For many of us if anything isnt at least 50% off its not a good deal, and most of those arent. Only you can know if its a good deal, since youre the one that knows how badly you want to play those games, or if you can wait until later.

Dusk Golem, your game has got me a little shook.

So I get to a point and I see this, 'cause it seems I've taken an L and got caught out by this suited fella. And this ghost
that tbqh reminds me of Boo from Mario Party games
shows up and hits me with:
unknown.png

Y'know, internally, I was nope. Said yes, though. Never have I ever been so glad to see a screen like this, since I lost the game:

Q_Q So I went through again, this time another way. And
Starry
goes missing on me when leaving the area you find her in. Go into this door. See the guy. Nope.

Thumbs up to the atmosphere and sound effects. At first, the reverb(?) effect on the voicing was weird to me. Now it just has me out here, wussing out a bit.

E: Okay, so I deliberately got caught out by the freaky dude to get sent to that ghost looking deal, and said no to the game. That isn't fleshed out either, but man, oh man. Feel wise, you've got me. You're hitting the right notes. I also want to say I really love the intro music for when you're first starting the game. Thumbs up.

This is my first Steam Sale (and my first real foray into PC gaming)! Looking to clean up on some of the FF games (IV, VIII, maybe X?) and hoping to grab Civ V Complete, among other things. Always open to recommendations too, if anyone has any!

Question: Would you guys agree to give up on Steam Refunds if it meant we got dailies/vote specials/flash sales back?

Kinda sounds like shooting yourself in the foot twice imo. In the grand scheme of things being able to see the specials for the entire sale is way more consumer friendly than impulse buyers.

So another question for the crowd here...

Elliot Quest or Environmental Station Alpha? Both are about $5 at the moment. They're both kinda similar, so looking to only pick up one this round.

I would set a budget and pick a bunch of games you think you're going to play before the next major sale. A lot of stuff is on sale in every major sale, so there's no rush to get any one game, and there are lots of other ways to get cheap games including bundles which are around $5-6 for anywhere from 5-10 excellent games. There's so much great stuff to try out across all genres, so I think it makes sense for you to stick with popular stuff you find interesting and branch out from there as you continue to stick with PC gaming.

I have a few keys to give away, would this thread be a good place to do so?

They are Technobabylon, The Beginner's Guide, Spaera and Railroad Tycoon 3.

Elliot Quest is an excellent game in the vein of Zelda 2, really amazing. I put 20 hours in and still didn't beat all the hidden bosses. On the other hand, there are some minor bugs, controller support is sometimes iffy, and the game has no achievements, no cards, no cloud saves, and doesn't support mac or linux. The developer just released this amazing game and then abandoned it, which is totally the opposite of what you want to do to get sales long-term. I was really disappointed when I played it that almost no one was talking about it, and then I figured out why. It's a pity, because it is honestly extremely good at what it sets out to do.

Any place is a good place to share games with friends. As the OP suggests, if you want a secure and accountable way to give away game keys with very little effort, you can use ModBot to do so, although you're welcome to manually handle them via PM or just post them in thread,

Virginia @ $6 any good? Anyone here dig the game?

I haven't played it but among the artsy crowd the game has been getting a lot of positive end-of-year buzz and has made a few top 10 lists. I know it's considered short, so whether or not $6 is a good deal probably depends on how many hours you hope to get out of $6.

Question: Would you guys agree to give up on Steam Refunds if it meant we got dailies/vote specials/flash sales back?

I would. I still haven't returned a single game on Steam.
I don't see how the two are related. Valve didn't decide to stop flash sales and daily deals because of refunds. They stopped them because they found that people actually spend more money when everything is on sale at once instead of at certain times.

May just wait on KRZ, it would go into my backlog. Thank you for the info. Another question for anyone that would know. Would ABZU run well on a 960M? Or would I be looking at having to run it on low-medium?

Anyways, $10->$5 is my "consider it" price, and <$5 is my "ok probably buy" price, depending on the original price of the game. Hoping to clear out a chunk of my wishlist.

Is this better/worse/the same as the autumn sale, for the most part?

I think the refund system is important but I wouldn't be opposed to situational disabling of it if it encouraged publishers to sell games more frequently at 75%+ off again.

So if I buy Costume Quest 1 + 2 it says I only get 2 if my I buy for myself.

Shouldn't I just buy as a gift then redeem 2 for myself and have a copy of 1 to gift?

Or is it a single-key activation bundle?

I would imagine that's a single key.

Which of the following should I buy to play next week, with the defining characteristics being 1) is a good game 2) there is enough time to finish it by the 31st given a couple of hours per day and some more on the weekend.

I Am Setsuna
Quadrilateral Cowboy
Tyranny
Seasons After Fall

It looks like a 960M is somewhere between the minimum and the recommended specs so this is definitely a good question to ask. I don't personally know, hope someone can help you.

Unturned is $3.74

It's a neat little survival game with simple and clean graphics, it even has a free to play version to try out, I recommend it if you have friends to play it. It was also made by a very talented 16 year old kid who continues to work on it.

Seasons After Fall is a good little game, but it's really quite simple. If you're looking for something more meaty then you can probably get through Tyranny is 20ish hours. Just be prepared to read a lot of text.

Well, I can log in and all, but it asks for my login again after wanting to purchase. Then Steam tells me I have a incorrect login, but I don't think so Gaben. Ya'll don't want my money?!

Edit: well, now it works. Complaining on Gaf = Success

I've heard really positive things about all four but haven't played any. Setsuna is considered a short RPG, but I think it's around 15-20 hours. I believe Quadrilateral Cowboy is more like 3-5 hours. Looks like Tyranny is around 15-30. Seasons After Fall around 5-10. None have great discounts in this particular sale so I'd probably hold off or get Seasons After Fall, which is the cheapest of the four.

SQUAD is currently on sale for $25. Its a team based FPS that plays similar to ARMA or Rising Storm. Its still in early access but there's plenty of content and more to come. It has Russian, American and Militant forces with the British currently WIP. It has complete mod tools which will see community weapons, vehicles, maps added to the game.

Finally picked up Undertale. Any thoughts on Axiom Verge?
I've beaten the main game and I'm working on getting 100% of the map and pickups.

For $10 it's a steal. You don't get many games that scratch the Metroid itch quite like Axiom Verge. It has really nice pixel graphics, solid soundtrack, and lots of fun weapons and abilities to use. The controls are nice and tight.

Buy it at the very least to support Tom Happ, who developed the game entirely on his own.

I think Ill just play the Final Fantasy games on the Vita.

Might get Mekazoo. Was interested in this when i saw a trailer a long time ago. Didnt even know it released though.

Hoping Superhot drops a little more. The Witness on sale is $20. Still seems like too much for that game.

Song of the Deep i could get, and maybe Talos Principle Road to Gehenna, but overall not a lot for me that Im seeing.

This kinda offended me lol. The Witness is certainly worth 20, since it's definitely worth the launch price of $40. Besides being one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had, there's at least like 40 hours of content just to "beat" it. 100 % will take much longer. I feel like all the complaints over the Witness' price are from people who never played it...absolutely ridiculous.

I'm overwhelmed by 75% of my wishlist being on sale, I'm going to grab Final Fantasy VII, Tales of Symphonia and Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut for sure though.

I've never left a KRZ episode feeling anything but satisfied. There's continuity between each episode, but it's never such a cliff that you feel cheated or played.

I think of it a little like waiting between seasons of great show, as opposed to episodes of it.

It's possibly the best written game I've ever played.

Question: Would you guys agree to give up on Steam Refunds if it meant we got dailies/vote specials/flash sales back?

No way. And I don't even care about Steam Refunds.

Flash sales always made me feel pressured to buy something I might only be mildly interested in because of the tiny window of opportunities. It was a pain in the neck to check in on Steam every 6 hours. The whole scene just stressed me out. In short, I shouldn't have to work so hard to give someone my money.

Good riddance, Flash Sales.
