Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

In other news, Silent Hill Homecoming (which isn't great and I think has a bad PC port if I remember correctly) is at an all-time low price by far, $5.99 (85% off). In previous sales it never dipped below $10, then this October it went to $8, and now $6. Not sure if this indicates they're planning to pull it, or if they're planning to actively take part in Steam sales going forward. Maybe keep an eye on it if this is an important collector's item for you.

I might as well buy it since I already hate myself.

Since the Judge Dredd game was brought up earlier, is there a list of games most likely to be removed from Steam after this sale?

No there isn't really, getting notice like that is not super common.

The Removed Games Collectors group maintains this list of "potentially at risk" games; including licensed games, annualized games, and others:

And continued discussion here:

Some of that is out of date (i.e. the first listing is for Tale of Tales' imminent shutdown, which they announced in like beginning of 2015 and they've continued to work on projects and I think release games since then so they obviously aren't actually going to shut down), some stuff is missing, but following those threads is probably the best resource out there. But there's no silver bullet.

How about this?

Hundreds of hours of game here.

I approve.

I just used Steam Tile. Works pretty good! What about tiles from Origin and GoG? They are small and not as nice as the rest. (Gwent/TF2/Diablo III)

Anything for those?

TileCreator. Again, it's more annoying to use than the other programs. Make things easier by putting all of the shortcuts to your games in the same folder as the tile pictures so you can link to them more easily in the text file.

Okay, I think I will just leave them small icons in the start menu then. That is annoying. Well, at least all the Steam games look really nice.

In before 66% is new 75%
yeah, I know it's 30 something pages already

did I miss any price errors?

I've checked my wishlist, many games have no discounts of any kind, and many of those not discounted aren't new

did I miss any price errors?

Hitman Complete at GameStop for $14.99 was a price error. Besides that, I don't think anything on Steam proper--I think Wok said some bundle-completion discount for some random games was set up wrong temporarily but nothing anyone was excited for.

The only price that seems a little high is Civ 5 Complete. A lot of what you're paying for there is the DLC. I haven't played enough to know if the DLC is worth it over the base purchase price.

The Brave New World and Gods & Kings expansions for Civ 5 are practically requirements at this point and buying them separately with the base game would add up to roughly $23. Civ 5 Complete is really the only responsible way to purchase the game. Plus getting all the extra countries and scenarios is just icing on the cake. It's honestly a great deal, even for people who already own just the base Civ 5, and I don't see the price dropping substantially anytime soon.

Those looks like pretty solid purchases. They all have pretty good sales, they're all recognizes as being great games within their genres, none seem immediately likely to be cheaper. The price for Life is Strange is especially good. Good job. The only price that seems a little high is Civ 5 Complete. A lot of what you're paying for there is the DLC. I haven't played enough to know if the DLC is worth it over the base purchase price.

Add in a few hidden gems at $1-2 a pop and you'll have a year's worth of games or more for the price of one AAA new release.

Thanks for the detailed feedback! Civ V is definitely the highest of the bunch but I figured it's not such a bad deal with all the DLC included.

Ys 1 and 2 are way too cool to pass up imo

Absolutely loved them both

Thanks for pointing me to those, I may have to consider adding them! The only Ys game I played was the Vita one (Memories of Celceta) so I figure now would be a good time to branch out and try some of the other ones.

The only game that's striking me as seeming a bit high is Sonic All Stars, but I'm not sure about it's recent price history

Not sure on that either. All I know is I've been craving a kart racer lately, so I'll shell out the $10 if I have to.

Life is Strange is amazing. /post

That seems to be the consensus. I only ever played the demo of episode 1 (back when episode 1 was new), so I'm looking forward to seeing what the fuss is about!

I must say I don't particularly like how steam award nominees turn out, some make so little sense, like test of time - Skyrim, or Whoa dude all category looks like a joke with those nominees, etc.
Also Mini Metro is "sit back and relax"? Maybe people who nominated it for such an award played 5 minutes or something, it's a very stressful game. btw.

This has to be the first time there were no price errors at all, unless I forgot.

As someone else said, you really do need the DLC to make Civ V worth getting. At this point I'd say with the DLC it's better than VI, although I think VI might end up being better in the long run.

I have a spare key for Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed from an old Humble Bundle if you want it. Also you might want to consider getting the GOTY version of Borderlands 2, it's only $3.50 more and if you decide you want to get the DLC later on it'll cost a lot more to get it separately.

Might take you up on that spare key. I'll shoot you a PM. And thanks for the heads-up, I may have to look into the DLC too.

Borderlands 2 GOTY is a ridiculous amount of content. It doesn't give you every piece of content for the game, but you get a great bunch of add on levels + "stuff". Well worth it.

who is "oderso" on steam? There's noone with that name on Gaf.

damn you people and your different names in different places

wow, blew my budget with dark arisen, hitman and highrise

I think I'll get more for dead rising in a bit

I think there might be one called pin everything, but I didn't feel the need to use it. Maybe it costs a few bucks.

Repeatedly feeding a pig its own shit until it bleeds, producing toilet tomatoes was the grossest for me. The blueberries were the only thing I missed, so I assume that's what you get from electrocuting the bird.
I beat the game though

The fact he kept eating it, I was like, lmao. Alright, guess it tastes fine to him. Dude isn't remotely fazed about it, just keeps asking for more. And yeah, the blueberries are where that's about.
I beat it as well, just recently. I liked how it went. Gonna buy Rusty Lake Roots this sale, I think, just to see how it goes.

I fell asleep reading that.

Are they literally lumberjacks

They are. Ironwood and Ironborn.

Thanks for the heads up, there's some things I've regret missing and will try not to make the same mistake.

My retail versions of Crysis and Warhead will not complete installation on Windows 10 due to known issues (a previous Windows Update for the former and I believe Securom or something similar for the latter). I'm assuming the digital counterparts install/work fine?

You could, if you didn't want to buy them again, try to have them activated on Origin as they're EA published titles and the Origin FAQ say it's possible.

Bought some stuff and will definitely get more, but I can't bring myself to click anything that isn't Rimworld and then play until it's way too late. I know it isn't discounted at all in this sale but the game is so amazing that ya'll ought to buy it.

Witness is good for $20 but hmm. I've held off this long... $10 would be better.

Joyous Yule!

(anyone spare an Ori coupon?)

Anyone played Rambo The Video Game: Baker Team?

Hard to get a feeling of the game quality when most negative reviews are simply complaining it's a on-rail shooter, which I see as a positive as long as it's a good on-rails shooter (Steam doesn't has enough of those, where's my House of the Dead?).

So with the new way Steam Sales works, Doom is unlikely to get any cheaper? I mean the price is great already, but every little helps after buying everyones presents this year .

I got it for under $16 on a Black Friday deal. Wouldn't be surprised if it goes to $15 by the Spring sale. There's the inevitable GOTY version too but IDK if that's worth it unless you like the MP since I think that's all the DLC content is for.

Yea it's shitty how CDPR punish people who bought Witcher 3 without the DLC. The DLC costs nearly as much as the game + DLC....

Season pass is $4.50 on G2A right now, I just bought it.

I bought the DLC on GoG (since my version is a GoG version) for $19.48 which came with the upgrade to the GOTY version last month when they had something going on. Also got my copy of Witcher 3 for free as part of an NVIDIA promo, someday I'll actually get around to playing it, if I ever finish W2.

Urgh, this is a dumb first world rant but I'm getting pretty tired of these sales. I'm having a hard time being interested in gaming at all these days and the only titles I legit want are always stupidly expensive even on sale, only going 20% off or less for the last few steam sales. I mean come on.

I know it's petty considering it's only $20 but that's way too much for gambling on something I "think" I want only to possibly get bored a few minutes in.

House of the Dead Overkill is on Steam as a bonus mode in Typing of the Dead Overkill, which is also great. There's also Blue Estate, which seemed pretty crummy from what I played. I do own Rambo (it looks like it's going to be removed soon -- the base price went from $20 to $3 which is never a good sign) but haven't played it yet.

I bought FFXIV (already owned windows version) so I could have it linked to my steam and now I have an extra code.

PM me if you are interested in the code. It would just be for the game (not steam).

iirc Giantbomb absolutely hated Rambo when it came out

Edit:
Just rewatched their quicklook, yeah it's full of very long cutscene/QTE/cutscene/QTE events, which are somewhat easy to fail and you only have 5 retries per QTE scene, and then the game devolves into shooting cops, with bonus points if you can injure them without killing them. Definitely does not seem too good.
