Double Dragon 4 (PS4/Steam) teaser trailer

This looks pretty cool but lol the Double Dragon series is going to be so confusing to people who hadn't followed the series. "Why are there two Double Dragon II's, and two Double Dragon 4s?" "How many versions of the first game exist" "Is Wander of Dragons even officially licensed?" "How did Wander and Neon exist at the same time."

What a crazy series.

Gameplay wise it's not bad. I still prefer the Genesis Contra Hard Corps, but the art style actually ruined it for me. I kind of hated that generic anime style. I liked the super masculine contra style from the 80s-90s.

I couldn't get into Uprising, it felt slower and more complicated than it should. I am a fan of Hard Corps on Genesis.

I like the 8-bit throwback. I think 1 and 2 arcade have aged better than 1 and 2 nes tho. 1 NES is still fun to play though.

This is blasphemy
There is only one Double Dragon 4 and it was super and it was on the SNES and it had one of the greatest soundtracks ever

when i read the thread title i thought "huh, Super Double Dragon is coming to PS and Steam?"

but looking back most people tuned out after DD3 so it makes sense. in retrospect its amusing how they went ahead and named that crappy cartoon tie-in "double dragon 5"... even weirder considering most people didn't know "double dragon 4" even existed prior

For those complaining about the title, as far as I know, the SNES version was always just "Super Double Dragon" and people just attached part 4 to it unofficially.

Double Dragon V was the first Double Dragon game that had nothing to do with Technos and Leland Interactive Media decided to call it 5. It had nothing to do with the previous games and was based on the cartoon.

This is appropriately part 4.

since you asked, DD2 NES came out in 1990. you were 10 years old then, you're 36 now.

Right now anyone actually planning to buy the Switch is someone already in Nintendo's ecosystem. This is what it looked like on the WiiU.

86% under the age of 35, meaning they weren't around when that game launched- or were at best too young to actually play it. Put a 5 or 6 year old in front of that game and they're not getting very far.

I'm sure you could dig up some stats on the 3DS if you were so inclined, but if i had to take a stab at it I'd say handhelds-at least in the US- skew even younger than consoles do by quite a bit.

If those fans are still gaming, they're likely on PS4/xbox/PC.

Check out the Genny version, I'm almost certain Sakimoto arranged this version.

Neon version da bess.

Double Dragon Neon has rather easily the best soundtrack in the series, my favorite from there is Final Palace. Out of the original games, DD2 takes it, with its final boss theme as my favorite.

I always liked the arranged version due to that smooth jazz sax solo at the end:

The arcade sprites are junky compared to the NES games. Especially Abobo if he's in this game. I hope to God Abobo is in this. He's the series mascot in my eyes.

Arcade Abobo just doesn't do it the same.

I always thought it was a guy made of rocks, like the rock guy in fantastic four

But it was just a black guy?

jesus christ this is worse than saying Fighting Force 64...

Naa, I like Gekido, similar to how I like the Die Hard Arcade games and Zombie Revenge on Dreamcast. I don't really think ANY 3D BEU's hold up all that way to the 2D games (they feel more like an offshoot genre, rather than progression), but I definitely enjoy them on their own.

I'm just glad Fighting Force didn't become the SOR sequel it almost was, heh.

And yet no one talks about it, and even the devs go back to older DD for their references and licensing. Much like how SoR3 is closer to "modern" games, but people still think of 2 more than it.

I'd like to see AKSYS make a BEU that's a bit more modern, but I just dont' think it's time for the groups they bring together to do it. Guilty Gear Isuka tried in a similar way, but it's gameplay was a mess. I like the idea of them starting off with making more solid classic-based gameplay, and then evolving that as time goes on.

Arc does amazing hand-drawn 2D, so seeing them going the 8 bit style is wicked disappointing.

Yet for Kunio-Kun they did this for PS3 and PC:

I'd like to see more stuff like Hard Corps. Uprising (or better yet, with hand-drawn background also), but games like this don't mean they won't eventually happen.

If anything, I hope they would use some of that GGXRD tech on a BEU one day. Their low frame, very anime-themed animation style would fit a game with an army of characters even better than it does a fighter.

The worse thing about modern BEUs is that they're always 10 ~ 20 dollar games, and no one places higher-level full releases for them, like Dragon's Crown. They're games that demand a lot of mechanical depth and unique characters and stages, but they get small budgets that don't even allow them to reach for the stage and character variety of the 90s games... If something like Rayman Origins can get an AA-ish release, I'd say a modern SOR or such should be able to demand the same, personally.

I do. I hope they never stop making 8-bit styled games. Just as well, I hope they never stop making 16 or 32 bit style games and so on.

yup... "neo 8-bit" games (mega man 9. odallus, ect) have a feel you can't match with hi res sprites. i'd hate to see it just be a fad, or shrugged off as one.

Is there any game of this genre in the last couple years that surpassses Scott Pilgrim .vs The World? that game its a masterpiece in the beat em'up genre.

The gameplay feel of "HD" versions of so many classics just doesn't match evenly. The need to use more buttons and add complexity because people don't' take the time to LEARN a game anymore, but instead want everything to either level up to make it easier, or work just like another game in the genre, forces differences that have no place in many of the classics.

I also love how such Hi-Bit games allow new devs to start off at the same place as the contemporaries, giving them a chance to see what it feels like for, say, one man to make the cast of a game, rather than each character being designed by a different person. The consistency of sprite games can often be more solid, since less artist can render the artistic vision of an entire game that way.

Considering hot everyone loves Scotty P, sure! I thing "Dragon's Crown" beats it, for one. Also "Phantom Breaker: Battlegrounds" combat is better to me, in the end. Double Dragon Neon is similar in my heart.

As far as things like Dungeon Punks, Viking Squad, Zombie Vikings, Mother Russia Bleeds, etc... hm. I don't have as much experience with those, but they seem to have their fans. Visually, they generally seem to be like "Castle Crasher, but worse", and that has kept me from a few of them.

I also have platinum in Dragon's Crown, but i think that game is in a different category. Its so well done and all around good that i usually forgot its just a simple beat em'up. Im talking something more, you know...

Doesn't matter if they were better games, nobody from that era didn't know what the arcade games looked like, the arcade game of Double Dragon got way more exposure than the NES port. It was one of the most popular arcade games of the era, which is why it got ported to every home system known to man, including Atari 2600, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amiga, Sega Master System, Atari Lynx, etc. I don't know how anyone could think that people didn't know it was a port of an arcade game when Sega even ran commercials comparing the NES version to the Master System version, showing its superior graphics and two-player gameplay.

In Europe the Amiga and AtariST ports of Double Dragon 2: the Revenge were of the most popular beat-em-ups.
Very good arcade ports too. No one bothered with the NES version.

I dont'know, i feel the game actually looks like too retro. I usually complain about adaptations being too different from original games. I admit there are beat them up i prefer over Double Dragon, like Streets of Rage, Two Crude Dudes, and Renegade

Did some researching and found out that Double Dragon 3 arcade had you paying for power ups and moves too. Woah thats pretty scummy.

I gotta say I love the series on the NES but never tried the Arcade versions. (got the gameboy port actually which was fun but almost impossible). Yeah that shot with the elevator looks damn disgusting but if it plays nice I am willing to forgive fore 10 pounds/dollars

Gotta admit fan prosject looks more visually pleasing:
