Horizon Zero Dawn | Cinematic Trailer

Thanks. It looks so good!

wow

Hmmm...this is increasing my worry that as the game progresses it will shift from hunting robo-dinosaurs to fighting other humans. If so, that's going to be a real big disappointment. The fewer humans in this type of environment, the better it will be I think.

I also don't like the appearance of the more fantastical robot design at the end. I really liked the robots patterned after existing/previously existing creatures. I don't want to fight just big randomly tentacle-y monsters.

Looks amazing. I really really hope the story and the characters don't suck. I like the female protagonists design. They changed it a little no? I think her hairstyle changed a bit.

People shouldn't expect Naughty Dog quality facial animations in a huge open world game

People shouldn't expect Naughty Dog quality graphics from a huge open world game, but here we are.
Not to keep ragging on this but do we have an example of better facial animation in another RPG with dialog trees? First Mass Effect and now this. People are obviously bothered by it. Someone will have to come up with better solution than what is being used currently.

Why Fallout 4 of course!

^ Pretty much this. I can't think of a game that does open world animations really well.

I don't work in animation, but my main issue with character animations open world games is that they don't really convey emotion like they would in a scripted scene. My guess is that it's relatively hard to have dynamic animations for body language, so most conversations end up looking really dead.

So much of what we communicate in a conversation is through body language, and I think the industry as a whole doesn't have a great way to do that on the scale of an open narrative.

Horizon is the best you'll get in an open world action RPG. I can't think of anything comparable.

Just to be clear, I am still looking forward to the game...but there is certainly something up with the animations. Hoping it does well.
Infamous: Second Son has the best facial animation I've seen in an Open World game. Watch Dogs 2 is also really great. Horizon is shaping up to be awesome too.

The last two AC games, Mafia III, WD2, Infamous Second Son.

Is it just me or do those character designs look like trash? they seem so tacky and toy-like. I dont buy that as a cohesive world at all. I'm I alone in this?

If this game gets good reviews it's going to be a monster, their next big hit. It's already in the top 20 on Amazon US and it's over a month away!

You'll have to better explain what you mean. Starting off by saying they "look like trash" isn't going to make for good conversation or replies.

This releases the day before my BIrthday, Nier Automata is 9 days later and then Mass Effect Andromeda is 13 days after or the like but but but then Persona 5 hits very early April.

Sweet Baby Jesus

Grand Theft Auto wasn't bad for a last gen game too. But I think there's a distinction between an open world RPG and and open world game, the dialog can often change in RPGs depending on your choices or what side quests you did or skipped.

The amount of NPC's with dialog in those pale compared to an RPG. Nor do they have dialog trees.
True.

Mafia has got some great facial animation.

But I would like to point out that it's actual gameplay animations are pretty damn bad. It's like two different games.
Most games have really bad facial animation outside of cutscenes, regardless of genre.

Oh yea if we're talking about RPGs the closest point of comparison would be ME:A and Witcher 3.

I think the writing will feel better in more context during the game. It's difficult to convey a good story and dialogue for a massive RPG in a short trailer. These are one liners plucked from larger conversations so they'll sound a bit corny and out of place.

I still think it won't require 45 hours to complete 100%. Definitely more.

I was not that impressed somehow. The hair constantly moving is fake looking and distracting and there's a lot of clipping, pop-in and artifacts. I think it's a case in which it looks much better in stills than in video.

Most single player games have issues pulling this off, not open world games.

You're right. My bad. I guess what I mean is that a lot of the design in that trailer contribute to the feeling of a believable world. Many of those character designs feel toy like in a world that is supposed to be grounded. They're execution on their "robot parts meets tribal dress" shtick feels really shallow to me i guess? The designs feel overwrought and ridiculous in a way that is not at all self-aware. I just don't buy into the world.

these are the ones i'm talking about in particular. Not the main character so much but all the other characters in these images. This is just a slice of what i'm talking about. im I crazy?

Personally I love it as the combination of random pieces of left over tech, metals and other elements with the tribal aspect looks really cool and is not something we see very often as a lot of post apocalyptic games are much closer to the actual apocalypse.

Some of that facial animation during dialogue looks a bit weak. I think my biggest concern is that everything about the writing looks generic and boring as can be. I don't mind having some kind of very archetypal man-machine-corruption story, but I do mind that everything sounds so bland and so poorly written.

I can't believe how good this looks. I really hope it doesn't disappoint me, because I could easily get lost in this world for hours
