Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

Reggie knows exactly what he is saying here and is carefully choosing his words (and his spin). People need to accept reality. You guys are living in a fantasy land of denial.

More like some people are picking out a meaning that suits their opinions and intentions for yet more negativity and smugness about the system.

I don't think Reggie intended this statement to be the official company line on "Nintendo switch matchmaking"

So The Wii U is a disaster- lets rethink our approach...

What if...

We make an underpowered system...

With shitty battery life...

And we price it out of market....

And we did the same to the accessories...

And we provide next to no internal memory in order to discourage digital purchases...

And by that we lessen the appeal for 3rd parties to join in...

And we then charge for online...

But then we half-ass the online concept by making an iPhone app for it instead...

And did I mention fuck 3rd parties?....

And what if our launch lineup was absolutely abysmal?

And we'll trickle out information in a unpolished manner so as to confuse and be overlooked by the masses?

Meeting adjourned!

This is messed up so i'm going to have my phone plugged to the wall as well? So the hand held mode pluged to the wall while playing in my bes, not only that, i will need to have my iphone beside me... then plug my phone to the wall... so it doesnt die on me all while having headphones coming out of the phone...??!! Thats a shit load of wiring. Especialy that my iphone recharge cable is short as hell.

I'm 1 more bad news from canceling my pre order of switch and zelda. This is getting ridiculous.

Allot of people call me on my phone how will i be able to even chat.

To be fair, we don't know this will be the case. Does this idea sound dumb as shit? Yes. But it might not be constantly-juggling-devices dumb.
It's not our fault Nintendo is vague and completely fucking obtuse when it comes to the most basic shit.

Guys, the sad part is that—according to Reggie—Nintendo "reads the boards" and even if they're second-guessing their decision based on the blowback (and not just here), it's too late to go back to the drawing board.

Not even the most pie-in-the-sky, amazing experience of an app is going to save this decision from the fact that you HAVE TO SWITCH BACK AND FORTH.

WHY DO I OWN STOCK IN THIS COMPANY?

Hence the name! Brilliant!!

I wouldn't rule out Apple making an exception for Nintendo.

The NFC thing is for amiibo.

I'm guessing that the Headphones/Headset connect to the Switch itself and it relays the voice chat data to/from the Smart Phone, and game sound natively goes to the headphones/headset through the same sound chipset as the voice chat.
If it did this, why use a separate device as it would still tie up just as much resources on the Switch?

NoJ console decisions

... are made like this?

He's the company spokesman.

Based on their decisions the only board Nintendo reads is GameFAQs, aka the site where Nintendo could murder a child on Direct and they would still sing their praises.

Then you are the one picking out what you want to see/hear. To anybody looking at this objectively, it's clear where Nintendo is going here. If Nintendo were going to offer standard matchmaking/voicechat/party features integrated into the console, A) why wouldn't they have clearly mentioned that by now and B) why the fuck would this app need to exist? You are in straight up denial. Search your heart, you know it to be true.

Console launches always bring out the best in the internet.

Wow, hope it's optional, otherwise a really stupid decision.

This is almost certainly the OS-level solution, the OS for this machine seems to do very little but handle the games and sleepmode.

Software will have its own matchmaking. This is about the Switch having a lobby/matchmaking system in the OS, that's almost certainly not happening.

Wii U had matchmaking, so I simply don't believe I'll have to purchase an app for my smartphone in order to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Splatoon 2 online.

Reggie knows exactly what he is saying here and is carefully choosing his words (and his spin). People need to accept reality. You guys are living in a fantasy land of denial.

NO, completely not what you're saying. You think that people buying Mariokart 8 Deluxe in APRIL wont have any way to play online whatsoever until the free trial of this app launches this summer?!

thats just plain wrong. he used the term match-making in this case only in the context of putting together a match for a particular game within a private lobby of registered MyNintendo friends.

ITS NOT GENERAL RANDOM ONLINE MATCH-MAKING.

Do you people honestly think this company would take such a giant step back and have to completely change the core code of their biggest online games to gate random online play (that is not entirely random as youll be grouped with those with a similar online rank)

For all the bitching here, it's not like we don't all have smartphones. I highly doubt most people picking up a $300 console don't own a smartphone.

It's something we haven't seen before, I'll wait to see and than commence bitching.

A lot of people aren't bitching because they are incapable of using this solution. They're bitching because somehow Reggie is identifying it as "elegant", when the current standard (I.e. Games/lobbies/voice chat on the same device) is clearly superior. This sounds like a cumbersome device-juggling alternative.

So...don't listen to the actual words coming out of the mouth from their main spokesperson?

I think some people might like to see concrete details before they completely lose their shit.

That's part of the problem, Nintendo needed to be crystal when it comes to the clarity of the Switch's online features right after they announced you have to pay for it now.

Instead, we're getting chunks of info from Reggie and it only seems to reaffirm how out of touch Nintendo is.

lmao, so anyone that doesn't have a smartphone or doesn't have one handy when they are playing is SOL and can't play online or anything?

AND you have to pay nintendo money to simply use it on top of this?

Nintendo needs to learn the Kiss rule.

Keep it simple stupid.

It makes absolutely no sense to require users to have to whip out a phone to use multiplayer on a game system. It's just red tape and another hoop to go through that isn't needed at all.

Now having this on TOP of it? Sure, if people want the added use of their phone for whatever, but requiring it? Absolutely stupid decision imo.
"Keep It Stupid. Simple."

Are these not concrete details? They've had an entire reveal event and multiple official statements since then. What more could they possibly need to give "concrete" info.

I haven't seen the UI in action. I haven't seen a webpage explaining the system. That's concrete.

The reveal event didn't talk about it at all. Reggie's statement is the first we've heard and it doesn't preclude any functionality within the system itself.

We're still not 100% on the Switch not including these features, right? It'd be interesting to push these features with only the mobile app. I wouldn't put it past them. It'd be nice to have a desktop version as well, frankly.

LOL at the people who keep saying "Wait and see! Wait and see!"

Yep and it happens with every move.

Wii U might be dying, but just wait and see the Switch lineup will be amazing. Droughts are over.

Switch launch line up is a little sparse, but just wait for E3. Then they'll unveil the megatons!

Not exclusive to Nintendo fans as you point out, but it bothers me more because I'm more of a Nintendo fan than anything else.

People buying MK8DX in April won't have a way to play with their friends. Not ok.

For real?

That's it. I'm fucking out. The Switch is permanently off of the list of things I'll ever buy.

There's no fucking way I can support this bullshit.

The statement is totally general and not specific enough to make the conclusion that this is the one and only way one form of online play or another will be managed on switch.

The smart phone app that we’re creating, that will be part of our online service,

Note the bolded.

They made an app with matchmaking for one game?

As someone who never uses matchmaking or voice comm, I really couldn't care less about this stuff, but it is pretty mind boggling how Nintendo is trying to convince people that this is anything other than ass-backwards. I really have to wonder how they came to this decision, and whether they really believe they're being clever by implementing it this way. Like, is it really a PR spin or are they being earnest in their belief that this is a good system? If it is a spin, why would they back themselves into a corner like this? Did some tech designer forget to include voice capabilities when designing the Switch and they never noticed until the last minute?

Like, how did this come to be?

Hey who doesn't have a smartphone these days??

Why put a feature on the Switch when you can just offload it to the phone? Why not just put the games on the phone as well then we wouldn't need to exert the switch at all. The switch would have 100% of its resources free then.

Well, that's... an interesting idea.
I'm not going to lie, that sounds pretty awful. Willing to see it in action before I reject it completely though.

I think some people might like to see concrete details before they completely lose their shit.

Yeah even if this turns out to be the only way, it's probably best to see how it's implemented before freaking out.

I personally can't possibly imagine there being no option to do this on the console itself but so far everything Reggie is saying is suggesting that's the case... But hey, I also couldn't possibly imagine launching without a web browser or Netflix support so what the hell do I know.

I'm trying to be optimistic and hoping that what this means is that for talking and matchmaking with your friends you have to use the app but with random people you can do it through console just like the Wii U. Its still shit but not the "all online features are through the app" doomsday some people are dreading

I'm going to assume that this is optional, or you only have to use it to play with friends. You've been able to play with random players for 10 years, I don't know why the Switch wouldn't be capable of that.
