Is should say Elegant Courage

Haven't seen it yet but that was an answer from Reggie that almost sounds like he doesn't believe it either. Wonder if this is tied to the dismal battery life and the poor location of the usb c connector to use a power brick while in kickstand. Trying to stay positive because we have not seen it yet but that was not a good answer. oh nintendo.

I have two main question

1) what happens when you get a phone call
2) what about the game sound?
This is pretty bad. Basically if you are using your phone / headset for chat you have to have game audio come through the speakers? Pretty poorly thought out.

I still don't believe it.

I think they want us to focus on their app. I don't think Reggie knows more than 'focus on the app'. I don't think Reggie knows much at all. We see his bullshit PR speak, we see how horribly he played Smash Bros (it's like he had no clue).

I just can't believe it. Nobody has straight up asked 'can the Switch itself handle voice chat without a cell phone? An ability consoles have had for over a decade?'

They just want to put out attention on their app, which I'm sure does other things with the MyNintendo account and friend swapping and crap, but these features are way too basic to not be included in the base console. Wii and WiiU handled friend matchmaking for christ sakes.
I mean at this point voice chat has been mentioned several times by Reggie or the official website and it's always been in relation to an app. They're supposed to sell this system, there's no way they wouldn't have mentioned anything OS-based by now if it existed.

There is no earphone/mike input on the controller, so voice does not seem to be physically possible when the thing is docked (outside of bluetooth), I don't see how any software update would solve that.

Plus you are horribly fragmenting the audience needing a phone or maybe bluetooth if added. Which is why the XB1 on PS4 come with headsets for each console sold. I can image even using a phone that the communication in game will be sparse

I could add a friend on Wii and WiiU and see if they were online and join their game at the very least. Well, at least a couple games supported this.

That's what I'm trying to say, the games just see which friends are online and let you join that way. No sort of matchmaking was happening at the system level.

What the app supposedly adds are lobbies like you get in the party chats on PS4/Vita and Xbox Live.

OK, question.

Can you still do matchmaking through console?

Like how is this NOT clarified in the article? That reporter didn't ask this exact question to Reggie immediately after he said all that? Like how did you NOT ask such an obvious question??

This also applies to that voice chat thing.

This whole thing makes no sense.

The launch of the Switch has been such a massive undertaking, and this year it was particularly challenging to pull everything together to make it happen. But, whenever I was in doubt, what kept me going was the belief that Nintendo had to be back to give him a moment he was robbed of. Of course, I'm talking about Reggie. We often talk about great consoles on Gaf, but I wanna take a minute to talk about the great man behind those consoles. Last year Reggie's world was turned upside down when the Wii U flopped. We all have tough times to go through, but the true test of one's character comes in how we react to those moments we don't control. When judgments are made, or when decisions are rendered upon us by others, we sometimes cant comprehend. I think what happened to Reggie is a tragedy. But, he never complained. He just sat in an isolated room for months, looked inside himself and focused on his art. He hoped his love of entertaining us would carry him thru the darkest days of his career and I thank him for all that he went thru. You know, when I've questioned things in my own life over the past few years, I've drawn strength from seeing first hand how Reggie dealt with this inflection point in his life. He is one of the most principled, loyal and ethical men I have ever met. For most of the past year, I have tried very unsuccessfully to give Reggie the respect he rightfully deserves. I soon found out why. He is such a principled person, that eventually word came back to me, that Reggie just said, "I cant have that blood on my hands". He had to move on. And today, Reggie is rebuilding his life and Nintendo with our support. As far as I'm concerned, Reggie is a Goddamn legend. Reggie, its finally time to give you the respect you deserve. Your one of the most deserving men to have it. You have always been there for me and have never disappointed me. On behalf of My family and Myself, Thank you for everything.

Obviously, this is all in preparation for Nintendo's eventual transition into mobile gaming.

/s, or is it...?

What a gross design decision.

How do you guys know the voice chat HAS to be done only through the phone? What if it's like you log into the app and now you voice chat through the smart device or you connect your wireless Bluetooth headphones with mic to the smart device or Switch tablet?

Because literally every single piece of information Nintendo has put out says otherwise

Unless their new Apple friends convinced them that Bluetooth headphones are the way to go and you can use them with the Switch while it's docked.

What a complete about-face Nintendo has done in the wrong direction. Their rhetoric used to be all about inclusion: "No one has an an HDTV, so we made Wii SD." "No one has broadband so we don't focus on online." "No one has $600 for a console so we made it $200." Some years later here they are telling everyone to buy a hugely expensive second device to use basic core feature that have always been built into the games or console. To bad they didn't do an about-face on the hardware and instead built an A73 Tegra X2 clocked to the limit.

I'm still getting a Switch, but if there was ever a Nintendo console not to early adopt, it's this one.

For real. I was so pumped up for the Switch in recent months but was disappointed by the reveal like many others. I still preordered anyway for Zelda, but the never ending stream of dumb as fuck decisions that have come out this week is making me question whether I want to wait instead. So many boneheaded decisions by Nintendo, which is frustrating since I want to see them succeed. Fuck

This is the most retarded shit since the Virtual Boy. Like, wtf? Why would I want to burn mu cellphone's battery to play a videogame?

We are going off the information Nintendo has given us and you are speaking in hypotheticals which comes off as damage control.

Since when can't you connect Bluetooth to your phone? Lol stop man. We're all talking things through.

How is asking if your phone will connect wirelessly to your headset DC?

The details on this are so vague that I would advise posting certain doom for the sake of your GAF posterit--

Oh, who am I kidding? No one will remember this thread once Fire Emblem becomes a MOBA.

Ok, gotta ask; is this a meme I'm unaware of? If not, that's touching but tough life as an exec thanks to shepherding a sales failure platform in your region doesn't explain away very strange and frankly boggling decisions such as this.

Reggie says the phone app does "matchmaking and lobbies" but that sounds crazy. How would the app know the matchmaking algorithms for every game? Seems more likely he just meant matching up with friends.

The little time I spent with online on Wii U was just with randoms and no voice chat. If I can do that on Switch without the app (I know you still have to pay, I just mean not busting out a phone to play randoms in Smash) then I don't care about this.

What if the app is supposed to replace miiverse? Every smart phone has a touch screen. What if the app replaces miiverse, messaging, and friendslists all at once?

This app will teach you loyalty. And you will pay. And you will love it.

I'm still stoked for my Switch but this is hilarious.

You're ignoring all the information Nintendo has given to hold out hope that their online isn't going to be as terrible as it looks like it will be.

This is either a technical issue to prevent any RAM usage from the OS while playing online multiplayer. Or Nintendo figures by making matchmaking and voice chat a phone app, this will solve being outside without internet since you'll need your phone to play online anyway. Just create a hotspot and play online. Genius!
Fuck you Reggie!

Unless their new Apple friends convinced them that Bluetooth headphones are the way to go and you can use them with the Switch while it's docked.

How many people will actually have bluetooth headsets?

The fact that they did not pack in a mike in every unit means this is DOA. Fragmenting is baaad

edit - this = online community not Switch...which I think will sell horrible outside of Nintendo's core but for multiple other design decisions on top of this

Does the switch come with a smartphone then?

Suddenly the price would make sense if that were to be the case.

That reporter didn't ask this exact question to Reggie immediately after he said all that? Like how did you NOT ask such an obvious question??

Nintendo never gets asked the tough questions and they've been fucking things up royally for years.

An interview with Nintendo is just a marketing spiel from Reggie. Ask a real question? LOL.

"Sorry, this interview is over"

More like 3 years ago. Cool meme but some inaccuracies are present.

--------

Anyway I think there is clearly something missing in translation here. There is no way they are walling matchmaking and chatting behind an app. When a new console is revealed you often get little misunderstandings like this

You're ignoring all the information Nintendo has given to hold out hope that their online isn't going to be as terrible as it looks like it will be.
Then don't pay for it. I'll see what the trial is like and if it's not good then I'm not getting it. I don't know the details.

Why would I pay for an app to talk to people when Skype and other apps do it for free?? But yeah I'm damaging controlling by talking things out.
