Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

Since when can't you connect Bluetooth to your phone? Lol stop man. We're all talking things through.

How is asking if your phone will connect wirelessly to your headset DC?

Funnily enough, the new phone I got for Christmas can't connect to my current pair of bluetooth headphones, so I have to buy new ones. And stop what? I answered your question, Nintendo has not said ANYTHING that would allude to us being able to use voice chat through the Switch itself. So how about you stop making excuses for their boneheaded moves, because it realllllllllly isn't helping anyone, and it isn't something worth defending whatsoever.

Anyway I think there is clearly something missing in translation here. There is no way they are walling matchmaking and chatting behind an app. When a new console is revealed you often get little misunderstandings like this
But he said exactly this?

What if the app is supposed to replace miiverse? Every smart phone has a touch screen. What if the app replaces miiverse, messaging, and friendslists all at once?
And why can't the console do that? You realize how insane this sounds right?

I feel like people are taking his comments with far too much weight.

I maintain my stance of simply waiting to see what they have online before i complain.

How many people will actually have bluetooth headsets?

The fact that they did not pack in a mike in every unit means this is DOA. Fragmenting is baaad

edit - this = online community not Switch...which I think will sell horrible outside of Nintendo's core but for multiple other design decisions on top of this

What? Say what you want about any of this, but I don't think not including a mic means that a console will be DOA.

The launch of the Switch has been such a massive undertaking, and this year it was particularly challenging to pull everything together to make it happen. But, whenever I was in doubt, what kept me going was the belief that Nintendo had to be back to give him a moment he was robbed of. Of course, I'm talking about Reggie. We often talk about great consoles on Gaf, but I wanna take a minute to talk about the great man behind those consoles. Last year Reggie's world was turned upside down when the Wii U flopped. We all have tough times to go through, but the true test of one's character comes in how we react to those moments we don't control. When judgments are made, or when decisions are rendered upon us by others, we sometimes cant comprehend. I think what happened to Reggie is a tragedy. But, he never complained. He just sat in an isolated room for months, looked inside himself and focused on his art. He hoped his love of entertaining us would carry him thru the darkest days of his career and I thank him for all that he went thru. You know, when I've questioned things in my own life over the past few years, I've drawn strength from seeing first hand how Reggie dealt with this inflection point in his life. He is one of the most principled, loyal and ethical men I have ever met. For most of the past year, I have tried very unsuccessfully to give Reggie the respect he rightfully deserves. I soon found out why. He is such a principled person, that eventually word came back to me, that Reggie just said, "I cant have that blood on my hands". He had to move on. And today, Reggie is rebuilding his life and Nintendo with our support. As far as I'm concerned, Reggie is a Goddamn legend. Reggie, its finally time to give you the respect you deserve. Your one of the most deserving men to have it. You have always been there for me and have never disappointed me. On behalf of My family and Myself, Thank you for everything.

If there is also matchmaking and voice through the console when undocked, this could be pretty good. The phone+earbuds would be your voice headset (since joycons would be impractical) when you're on the couch. Hopefully you can still do lobbies and everything on the console when docked.

There's just no way it can be phone-only online when in handheld mode. There's no upside to that at all.

The bulky headphones argument is dumb, but if the app pairs with the Switch in a cool way, I could at least see this functioning.

Say you're at a coffee shop (with a hot spot) and you get a notification on your phone (that you currently have your headphones/phone-mic connected to) that your buddy just joined a lobby in Mario Kart 8, and shortly after you get a party invitation.

Go to the app, accept party invitation, and you're talking to him. He's like "hey come play", so you hit "join game" or whatever and bust your Switch out of your bag.

If the app pairs with the Switch well, it boots MK and joins the guy's game while you're getting it out. You proceed to play, talk to him through your phone, and you can flick a "game audio" thing on it if you want.

It's not simple, but I could see it. Shrug.

Since when is "connect a Bluetooth headset to your phone" not relying on a phone
When did I say that? Lol

Funnily enough, the new phone I got for Christmas can't connect to my current pair of bluetooth headphones, so I have to buy new ones. And stop what? I know you're mad, but you can relax lol. Either way you use the smart decixe. It was made clear voice chat is only able to work if you log into an app on a smart device.

People said "what if I want to use my phone?" So I was saying maybe after you log into the app on your phone then, hopefully, you can connect a headset to the Switch so you can use your phone to do whatever else.

You know we did this to ourselves. How many of you actually used your video conference app with a friend on your Wii U? What's that... you didn't even know it existed? They looked at the telemetry for that app and funneled development resources to alternate divisions.

More like 3 years ago. Cool meme but some inaccuracies are present.

Completely possible that normally-OS-level features are being handled like this, tbh. This also gives Nintendo some wiggle room in regard to some of the toxicity that can come with these things.

Game-level stuff will prolly work normally.

The Switch is looking like the Frankenstein monster of consoles. Body built with the worst parts of a home console and a handheld, head powered by a completely separate device.

I didn't even think about the game audio needing to play through a phone when you're using voice chat. That's such a huge oversight that I'm kind of in shock they'd ever think this was a good idea. Then charging on top of it is totally nuts. Nintendo either has some amazing benefits of this that they aren't sharing yet...or they've totally lost their mind.

So what about Switch users without a smartphone?...

Like any kid under 12?

They seriously designed an entire system that cuts children out of the picture.

Between the heavy and fragile body, easy to lose JoyCons, expensive accessories and ridiculous paid Online app that requires a phone.

Insane. And they are charging for online services that require a seperate device to use.

huh?

The details on this are so vague that I would advise posting certain doom for the sake of your GAF posterit--

Oh, who am I kidding? No one will remember this thread once Fire Emblem becomes a MOBA.
What's vague exactly? Reggie seems to make it pretty clear that certain online functionality, such as voice chat, requires a smartphone for no particular benefit to the consumer. That seems pretty bad by itself.

And if you think we need to wait for more information, that's fine... but that's kinda what all the "outrage" is about to begin with: to make sure that Nintendo actually KNOWS and gets the message LOUD AND CLEAR that people are confused and to clarify their messaging. If people are happy to wait and do nothing until launch then Nintendo similarly has no reason to clarify ANYTHING until then. The only way to MAKE SURE that they clarify it is to make it clear that our purchases depend on them doing so. Otherwise, why would they give a fuck at all? They have no reason to.

So if that's how you feel--that we need more info--then you're really on the same page as those posting certain doom, as that's the whole point of such posts: to make sure this stuff is either cleared up or changed as soon as possible, so I don't see the point in actually deriding such posts as that wouldn't seem to be to the actual benefit of anyone in that case.

Between the heavy and fragile body, easy to lose JoyCons, expensive accessories and ridiculous paod Online app that requires a phone.

Insane.

Perhaps that was intentional. Maybe it was to stop pedos?

Yikes.

Everything about this console is sounding like a right disaster.

I'd have easily paid more money to get a better piece of hardware, but now they're telling me i need to waste my phone battery too just to play online?

Good god

Then don't pay for it. I'll see what the trial is like and if it's not good then I'm not getting it. I don't know the details.

Why would I pay for an app to talk to people when Skype and other apps do it for free?? But yeah I'm damaging controlling by talking things out.
So your response to crtisism is "don't buy it" lol. How about Nintendo gets its act together and creates a competent online infrastructure instead of trying to be different for no good reason? The overwhelming majority of people in this thread think this is a stupid idea.

Nice try with the Skype comparison but that's disingenuous

Added.

I still don't think this app thing could possible be true but seriously this system has sooo many negatives at the moment it's ridiculous.

Nintendo never gets asked the tough questions and they've been fucking things up royally for years.

An interview with Nintendo is just a marketing spiel from Reggie. Ask a real question? LOL.

"Sorry, this interview is over"

I guess this is shitty either way if they really don't have matching making through console.

Either they keep dedicated fans confused until launch or let the shitstorm coming right now.

But if they DO have the option of build-in match making, I don't see why they just say so.

Online community will be DOA

Lack of voice chat hasn't affected Splatoon, Mario Kart, or Smash Brothers online. I guess they're happy keeping that amount of people playing and don't want to increase it much?

Whatever, this whole thing is baffling. I can't wait for Nintendo to completely explain how their online works. That day is going to absolutely bonkers if any of this is true. I've got my fingers crossed that we're just getting half the picture.

You guys do understand what he means by using the word "Matchmaking" in that sentence right? I'm under the impression that some people here think they won't be able to find matches without the app, when we are talking about text and voice interaction.

This is honestly one of the most bizarre posts I've ever read in my entire life.

Nope. It's not disingenuous. All other apps are free so it's stupid you even have to pay for voice chat from Nintendo through a phone when you have all these other services that offer voice chat for free.

Yeah...log into the app on your smart device and connect your headset to the Switch so you can use your phone for other things. It's all cumbersome from the way it sounds.

I think this is Nintendo's idea of a solution to embracing online mp culture but trying to preserve their family image.

AFAIK, there's no widely used app by either Sony and Microsoft that links people together through an app that integrates with either of a console. And the entire point is you can't take that with you anywhere you want with any previous console. You can literally take both the console and the console's social experience with you by using your phone as an access point.

The question is more whether or not Nintendo made a social experience worth taking around with you.

go to bed.

How, on any possible world, is 2 more elegant than 1?

The only other solution that got past the prototype stage involved an app that was like the Looking For Group feature on Xbox but it was even better because it put everyone in touch with local travel agents so you could quickly get a flight/train/taxi to an equidistant location and play 1, 2 Switch together like God intended.

Nope. It's not disingenuous. All other apps are free so it's stupid you even have to pay for voice chat from Nintendo through a phone when you have all these other services that offer voice chat for free.
Yes it is and you are conveniently ignoring all the other people calling you out. No idea why you are fighting so hard to defend this bonehead move and then make some bizarre Skype comparison.

I think this is Nintendo's idea of a solution to embracing online mp culture but trying to preserve their family image.

I don't mean literally. I meant the system is clearly designed and targeted for adults and is very un-friendly towards young children. It goes against everything Nintendo has ever done.

You can use the vita to organize parties with no need for a phone, you can even use the damn 3g version that no one wanted.
You can use the playstion app to send message, receive invites,or play the games with it.

It's holding them back. It's a facade anyway. Nintendo allows violent games and games with partial nudity.
