Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

Even if that's true

EVEN IF THAT'S TRUE?! what, you think all these games that are coming at or a month from launch suddenly cant handle their own matchmaking?! Like somehow they're all going to have to communicate with an app which isn't even released yet, and once that app is released every single piece of software gets auto-patched so the online multiplayer is locked out unless you navigate through an app?

Is my life as a gamer better because I'm required to use my phone and use two devices to play Mario Kart? The user experience of this thing better be fucking award winning.

for goodness sake, you wont need to use two devices to play Mario Kart online. you'll only need to bust the phone app beginning late summer with the trial version if you wish to get a bunch of Switch console levels friends together in a private lobby, launch in to Kart with that party and chat throughout

do you people really have THAT low of an opinion of Nintendo and their approach? All it takes is one big wig using less than great wording in an interview and a Gafer deciding to create an alarmist negative vague thread based on incomplete info which suggests a situation which is beyond absurd?

We do know that nothing is really final with their online service and they're just kind of winging it until its official launch in Fall.

But like with the rest of the system there's still more questions than answers, and the answers we haven aren't satisfying.

Here's to hoping they'll backpedal by then. I've used up all of my piss and vinegar for one day.

You could be kicked from custom out-of-game matchmaking and prolly all voice chat, yes.
There's no way in hell Nintendo could be this dumb to think this is a good solution. They're already alienating people who don't even have a smart device if we take this at face value. I mean maybe in the grand scheme it will work out great and casuals won't care since they use their phone, but man they can't keep us in the dark about this. Shit should've been detailed from the start. This company no matter who's in charge will always be a rollercoaster.

Shouldn't we know everything about their online service by now? I mean, the Switch comes out in like 43 days. If not the subscription price, at least the functionality and exactly how it works.
I mean according to them the network and app won't be ready until the fall so they might not even know everything.

I kinda doubt you will need a phone to enter matches.

That's likely true. I figured if it's needed for matchmaking it may be needed for the match itself, but you're probably right.

You could be kicked from custom out-of-game matchmaking and prolly all voice chat, yes.

Jeez. I'm waiting till the fall to jump in, but I'm definitely going to watch and see how this all works out in the meantime.

What Reggie's saying sounds to me like you can go look for online matches independently of what your Switch is doing (i.e. you don't have to have the game running before starting to get into a multiplayer match) In other words, trigger the same functionality as game invites on other consoles, only you're inviting yourself into the match. That sounds pretty cool to me.

It is really truly shocking that an idea like this could make it out of a single meeting, let alone become the new system standard.

I don't think we have usage statistics that we've ever seen, but if you're talking anecdotally, than I can say yes.

I use the PS apps all the time (it's super boneheaded that they split the message app from the main app but whatever). It's super quick to reply to a message, and it's an easy way to check if my friends are online before I turn on my PS4 or go do something else. All in all it's a serviceable app that nicely enhances my experience and pairs well with the OS-level functionality. That's exactly what any smartphone app should be.

Lol, this from a company that told a developer they never used PSN or Xbox Live so they needed more details from the dev about those services to help the dev try to get online supported like those services do it?

WHO LET TINGLE DESIGN THE NEW NINTENDO? :joy: :joy: IM SCHLEEEEEEEEP CUZ

Y'all love to overreact, lmao. Nintendo will be fine, this will come down to options. That's all. The ride into March 3rd is going to be insane, lol.

Dude you can place hopes on that, but as it stands Reggie's wording leaves no quams that this app is going to be the only way to use these online connection features. I honestly hope he mispoke and it gets clarified, but I just don't think so based off of how he said it.

The fuck man

That's just going backwards as fuck , yes I have my phone on me / next to me when playing games but I don't look at it constantly

If we have to go to the app to get online play with randoms my mind will be blown

They need to sort this out quick, DS/3DS wasn't like this, Wii / Wii u wasn't like this, what the hell

Remember when Nintendo launched a new system in 2017 with no online functionality because they still don't see online as a priority?

I'm sure it's definitely going to be great, eventually. Definitely.

Why should I buy a Switch at launch, again? I have a Wii U with free online.

See, I don't know if it's idiotic yet even if that's actually what happens. You're right to distrust Nintendo but funelling people through a social media app, while completely a dick move, could be worth it for Nintendo if the app is actually good.

For the record, I don't think that's really likely, I'm just writing fanfiction like everyone else in here.

It IS idiotic because if the online functionality is this fucked up then I'm not going to pay for their online service.

If I'm not paying for online, I can't play online multiplayer.

If I'm not playing online then I'm not buying Mario Kart, Arms, Splatoon 2.

If I'm not going to get any of those games then why should I buy a Switch when I can play Zelda on my Wii U?

I'm not going to be the only person thinking like this as well. There's no upside to this approach.

I'm also one of the dozen people on earth still using a Windows phone so I'm going to need to buy a new Android device to even use the app :(

It is also the most "casual market".

Say what you want but kids now would like to do anything on their phone.

That's why this could be the best move they've ever made because it ties the casual market to their system.

But still tell us everything dammit.

I don't know how you all use your phones but when I speak to someone when I use mine I hold the phone in my hand and speak into it, how do I hold a switch controller and a phone at the same time?

Or I'm going to sit in a Starbucks right, raping their free internet shouting into the handset while it's sat on the table in front of me while I play mario kart with my mates? As that seems to be what he's saying.

I don't even care about the MM. It's BEYOND stupid voice chat is not built into the OS. This has been done on consoles since 2005. Why couldn't they just do it like xb1 and ps4? They are marketing this as a home console first right ? So when did they ever think people would want to voice chat through their phone?

As much as I dislike this as an enthusiast, I do still think there is a chance that this could be spun as a positive if the features and functionality are there.

I mean goddamn, GAF. Critical analysis is a good thing, but leave a little wiggle room.

Shame to see a cool system like Switch be marred by this. I don't like their non-App approach. I wanted a Spotify app for custom soundtracks, too. Its 2017.

No, we have to speak up. It is up to Nintendo to pay attention, or convince us otherwise.

This is weird, but I don't really care too much as long as mp is there. It'll be nice to be able to use my iPhone headset w/ volume controls I guess.

I really hope they can implement this basic function on the console on the future, i dont want to use my phone all the time for this

Why is this a bad idea?

I don't play games online. Can someone enlighten me?

1. Not everyone owns a smartphone.
2. You are relying on an external device that may not always be available (lost/stolen/broken/in a repair shop = no Switch online for you).
3. Phone runs out of battery mid-game, you're probably booted out of your online session.
4. Many people install iOS/Android public betas, the app could potentially be broken on these beta OS's meaning these users cannot play online for months...
5. They are putting themselves in the hands of others - Apple's App Store goes on lockdown in like the last 2-3 weeks of December, and that's when there's most likely gonna be a problem if Switch (somehow) gets massive holiday sales. So they could be in a situation where they need to release an emergency app update and all the App Store employees are on Christmas vacation or whatever.
6. This ties up your phone. If you answer a phone call, it'll almost certainly end your online session (or at least the voice chat aspect).

Then there's the logistics of this...
7. You're not gonna be able to hold a cell phone to your ear while both hands are clutching a controller. So this leaves two options, headset or speakerphone.
8. Headset - the lightning earbuds included with the iPhone 7 block the charging port, so you are going to run into issue #3 (battery dying mid-game). Unless you buy a bluetooth headset, but then you run into more issues (hassles pairing / re-pairing the BT connection, another device to purchase, another device you have to monitor the battery levels of, etc.)
9. Speakerphone - is what most people will probably use and that sounds crappy. Since the phone is most likely going to be sitting on a coffee table or the other side of your couch, voices are going to be garbled as fuck, you're gonna hear the game noise on top of that, etc.

This is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard, not a single thing about this setup sounds the least bit appealing or convenient.

Nintendo probably doesn't want kids on voice chat.

I thought so too in the previous thread, but looking at Reggie's justification it's pretty clear that no one in Nintendo's top brass has ever used XBL, PSN, or Steam to play a competent online game.

Either you have your phone on speaker for voice chat, you're horrifying those around you at your local hotspot, or you plug in headphones...which is pretty much the same as using a headset. And would potentially mute game sounds if you have to plug them into your phone. If you plug them directly into your Switch, why do we need the phone for this again?

do you people really have THAT low of an opinion of Nintendo and their approach?

Yes.

Edit: Just FYI, if the console ships with no matchmaking/voice chat features and the plan for those to run completely through phone apps, there's a very small chance it will ever change as they'd have to change their OS RAM/CPU allocation which could break any games that released before the change.

I'll say again, the only reason that makes sense to me is that they want as much processing power for games as possibe, and I would be fine with that, I want my metroid
lel
to look as good as possible. And IF the app is well made and has all the functionality it may not be as big a disaster as people think it will.

#bulkyheadsetgate can't be the real reason, and I just wish they'd trust and be more open with their fanbase

It's just based on the fact that it would make absolutely no sense, especially from how Nintendo has been advertising this as a home console. I assume Reggie was implying how it's for those "on the go" situations where you take the Switch. And I literally can't imagine Nintendo releasing a console in 2017 with an option for lobbys/etc on an app, and not their actual device.

This is just misinformation on a feature that hasn't even been discussed in detail yet. Just chill out, tbh. The only response anyone could say is, "Because Nintendo." and that shouldn't warrant all this commotion.

Oh well.
