Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

I mean yeah we don't have all the details but so far this sounds absolutely fucking stupid.

If only someone could ask Reggie whether matchmaking could be made through the console too.

Idk, seems like that reporter from the article was in a pretty convenient spot for asking such an obvious question.

I actually don't think it's a bad idea and it's quite strange to see Nintendo doing this first.

These days, it's much easier to chat and send messages on smartphones to the point that these functionalities on consoles are already a bit redundant. My friends already prepare their games using their phone instead of the ps4. It's not something uncommon.

Trying to make a coupling between your hardware and smartphones is good. I just can't see what nintendo will make that doesn't exist already (and better) on phones, rendering the whole idea plainly useless. Also, putting every functionality on it seems a bit too much and some stuff seems a bit non pratical.

But i can only wait and see what they plan to do. For now, it doesn't sound that bad to me, but i don't Trust Nintendo on this.
There is a native PS and Xbox app that does this already... It's just not mandatory.

Only to demonstrate its functions, but anyone with any sense knows this thing is a handheld device. This thing will not be marketed as the place to go for online multiplayer gaming. Even so, it will have some games that do that, like Splatoon 2. Nobody cared about having voice chat with that game, and it will be the same with the sequel.

Switch won't be getting stuff like Destiny 2, Battlefront 2, Battlefield 1, Borderlands 3 etc. It will get stuff like Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Zelda, Pokemon, Shin Megami, Dragon Quest and the like.
Only the second part is right.

The first part...you are assuming A LOT, and they are absolutely marketing it as a portable CONSOLE.

This is too dumb.

On the bright side, if we're okay using the phone as a secondary Switch device we'll suddenly have access to Miiverse, music players, Netflix, Super Mario Run, Pokémon Go etc "on the Nintendo Switch" too. Awesome!

:S

What does being a handheld have to do with anything?

I also love how fans are arguing the merits of the Switch as a handheld or as a home system based on whatever suits them at the moment.

It's better behavior than jumping all over the company when they know the games will have matchmaking, and better than being so damn petty over a feature 90% of the fan base will not use, or projecting other companies' focus and their fans preferences out of place.

The way some of you guys act about this stuff makes me think you'd all prefer to have only Microsoft, Sony and PC all putting out the same games, with the same exact way to play everything.

This device is a different animal altogether. Stop putting other fans and companies expectations on this thing.

So people without a Smart phone shouldn't buy a switch if they plan on ever playing online right?

I finally bought a Smart phone last fall. Not every one wants/can have a smart phone.
Won't they be bad for the poorer countries that can barely buy a switch?

I really hope they plan to update this/it's false information.

What, you're not allowed to expect standard, modern service out of a nintendo system because 'it's different'?

Nintendo invite the comparison with paid online.

Didn't even knew! I guess it goes on what i said "what Nintendo can make that goes against what the phones already usually offer?"

Unless it's something incredible (and i don't believe It will be) why someone would pay for it?

This about sums it up. I'm a bit of a hypocrite since I'll be buying one at launch, but Nintendo potentially has a serious problem on their hands.

Did I mention I'm a hypocrite?

Ditto. I hated the Wii U as a console (the GamePad was just shit through and through) and while I actually like the Switch's core gimmick I have numerous, significant issues with it. But I bought a Wii U day one and pre-ordered my Switch because fucking goddammit, those assholes have to make fucking amazing games. I fully admit I'm part of the problem but until I can get Zelda, Mario, Smash Bros., and Pokémon elsewhere (or until all four franchises die and/or start churning out garbage like what happened with Metroid T_T) then fuck it, hypocrisy ho!

The Bomberman game has online. I wonder if there will be any way to play with friends at launch, or if it's randoms only?
This is the big question because it sounds like you can't from what we know right now. It sounds like you'll play with random people until the beta version of this app releases in the summer.

And Nintendo isn't giving us all the details...

Just make sure everyone has a ps4/xbox/pc then create a party chat with your friends through that. However, make sure you only use one ear for party chat because the other will be needed for the game sound. Or get the Switch App and use two headsets or headphones. Those seem to me like the only options at this moment.

The launch of the Switch has been such a massive undertaking, and this year it was particularly challenging to pull everything together to make it happen. But, whenever I was in doubt, what kept me going was the belief that Nintendo had to be back to give him a moment he was robbed of. Of course, I'm talking about Reggie. We often talk about great consoles on Gaf, but I wanna take a minute to talk about the great man behind those consoles. Last year Reggie's world was turned upside down when the Wii U flopped. We all have tough times to go through, but the true test of one's character comes in how we react to those moments we don't control. When judgments are made, or when decisions are rendered upon us by others, we sometimes cant comprehend. I think what happened to Reggie is a tragedy. But, he never complained. He just sat in an isolated room for months, looked inside himself and focused on his art. He hoped his love of entertaining us would carry him thru the darkest days of his career and I thank him for all that he went thru. You know, when I've questioned things in my own life over the past few years, I've drawn strength from seeing first hand how Reggie dealt with this inflection point in his life. He is one of the most principled, loyal and ethical men I have ever met. For most of the past year, I have tried very unsuccessfully to give Reggie the respect he rightfully deserves. I soon found out why. He is such a principled person, that eventually word came back to me, that Reggie just said, "I cant have that blood on my hands". He had to move on. And today, Reggie is rebuilding his life and Nintendo with our support. As far as I'm concerned, Reggie is a Goddamn legend. Reggie, its finally time to give you the respect you deserve. Your one of the most deserving men to have it. You have always been there for me and have never disappointed me. On behalf of My family and Myself, Thank you for everything.

Haha nice.

Well, since online multiplayer is tied to the same subscription anyone who wants to play Splatoon or Mario Kart or whatever online's gonna have to pay for this useless crap too.

Funny that people are treating the sold out preorders as a huge deal. Everyone is fifty five times bitten fifty six shy by now with how they handle stock. I know so many people who have multiple preorders who have no intention of keeping them all. They're just keeping them to ensure they can get one.

By "voice chat" do they mean "phone call"? And by "matchmaking" to they mean "call your friends and arrange a game"?

Poor helpless trillion dollar company Nintendo. Will somebody think of their feelings??

Everyone, I think Nintendo is doing us a favor because they feel they saved us money from buying another accessory. Thanks Nintendo! #proconsumer

Just look up playstation app, you can send messages, buy games, receive game invites, even use it as a second screen.

This doesn't really solve the problem for people who don't have smart phones if you NEED it for match making.

Splatoon is a pretty much an exclusively online game. Far more than 10% of the userbase will want to play online and will be forced to pay for it.

If I pay for it, I expect more than the barebones online the WiiU offered, but at the very goddamn least I could matchmake with friends in Splatoon on WiiU and play with them without the need for a smart phone.

I think the biggest issue, as mentioned, is voice chat. It makes no sense to have the voices of friends and audio from the game come from two separate sources.

I get the app might be cool, allow me to manage friends, add them and sync with facebook and stuff, but for the love of god, if you can't manage basic friend matchmaking and voice chat at a system level, this is fucking stupid and there will be backlash.

1) 90%? Really? You want to show us some stats, or are you gonna stop pulling stuff out of your ass to defend Nintendo's boneheaded moves? It's not projecting shit, these are basic features we've had for YEARS and Nintendo is apparently to incompetent to be called out for them.

2) Is it super weird to you that X1/PS4/PC do have library diversity between them yet somehow still have online communication features without ass backwards implementation? It must be, since those two things are tooooooooootally mutually exclusive.

3) God forbid we hold the almighty Nintendo to basic standards.

Fuck outta here with that trash, this is dumb no matter how you slice it.

And here I thought I was part of the problem by buying these damn consoles over and over again despite having so many issue with them, but nope lol. This shit is literally the problem.

"It's better to be different, even when different is utterly fucking stupid!"

This doesn't really solve the problem for people who don't have smart phones if you NEED it for match making.

Yeah I realized that after I posted it. They can't be serious with online matchmaking also being attached to this app. That can't be real, that has to be a 4chan troll job. Matchmaking has to be threw the system itself. They can't be that oblivious right?

Is there any way to make Nintendo hear the backlash and confusion this is causing?

There are smart people in the company who make smart decisions.

I still refuse to believe the console level OS can't manage friends and voice-chat. I refuse to believe it. Maybe I'm living in denial, but it's the stupidest decision they could possible make.

You and your cheerleading for Nintendo:
Stw0UPm.gif

This post is presenting such a dumb excuse on so many levels.

The idea that 90% of the fanbase wouldn't use voice chat is absolutely ludicrous when we've seen studies that 28% of teen girls and 71% of teen boys use voice chat. Other platforms wouldn't be continually offering and updating voice chat and party features if they were unused features. They are a set of ubiquitous features that have become an entrenched and expected standard for a reason.

Not including a useful and fun OS feature because you want to "be different" isn't smart approach to design. Sure, make your games different from the crop others are cultivating. Offer unique social experiences like Miiverse* that differentiate yourself from the competition. But offer standard features and QoL additions as well, because otherwise you're being different merely for the sake of being different.

You, and people like you are the problem. Because you have no expectations for Nintendo. Because you hold them to no higher standard. Because you don't ask for or expect better. You just swallow whatever load of cock-and-bull story they feed you under the auspices of "being different."

*Note: it's hilarious to me that Nintendo's big social differentiators, Miiverse and Streetpass, were killed

So how do I voice chat and use headphones for game audio?

This where I think most people are confused about the app, I think the app is integrated into the systems OS, where you connect to the app on the Switch and on the Phone, then you get the sounds from the Game along with voice chat. But this needs to be explained how it works quickly

No one can defend this shit, and reggies spin is on a whole other level. What's elegant with needing a whole other device to play setup chat etc it's not and elegant system would have you know all that ability built into the one device you're using Nintendo do different for the sake of it or by forcing you to use the phone it's somehow making the console cheaper would they need to pay for licenses etc if you are using your phone?.

The question is, will you be able to join specific people in game without the app? Not talking about system wide like party chat, that seems pretty much locked to the app.

This setup raises two questions.

1) How do you use voice chat while docked?

2) Why do you need the phone app anyway?

Apparently yes but don't take my word for it. I'm as confused as everyone here.

I hope and think you are right.

I think it's just badly communicated and I honestly don't think Reggie plays or understands online gaming. I've honestly been on the side that they should let him go for awhile now.

Watch the app actually be really cool.

This setup raises two questions.

1) How do you use voice chat while docked?

2) Why do you need the phone app anyway?

1. Why wouldn't it work? There is such thing as wireless headphones. If the voice chat is managed from an OS level, the Switch being docked wouldn't just stop and cancel that.

2. It might allow you to sync with facebook and you contacts? Send messages about matchmaking as a text? Might have some advanced features like stat tracking, allowing you to see who is online, all why not on your Switch. As long as the OS can support the basic functions of VO and friend-joining, I think a support app might be neat.

This has to be a messaging problem. It simply can't work the way we're all being led to believe it does.

This is not your typical 'Nintendo move', this is not akin to using cartridges for the N64, this is akin to using cassette tapes for the N64.

Someone tell me if this is a work

Wait, where did you hear that the Switch offers party chat?

Here's Nintendo's wording:

"Our new dedicated smart device app will connect to Nintendo Switch and let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games─all from your smart device."

Huh? I thought when this thread was first made we knew that switch has party chat options, or it sounded like that. Did something change or new information get revealed?

I'm not even getting a Switch at launch, but this behavior is nonsense. Over the past week or so, I've read all kinds of false information about the Switch, like people claiming you only get one Joy Con Controller for $80, and that the Wii U version of Zelda BotW was superior to the Switch version, and now trying to claim the games on Switch won't have any online matchmaking without a phone app?

This is getting stupid beyond anything ever seen, even from fanboys. When Microsoft was gonna bend us over and make us connect to the net in order to play Xbox One, and eliminate used games, that backlash was justified. Not this type of Russian fake news of propaganda and lies.

Why all the hate? Because Nintendo wants to make a system that is different from the triplets we have now? Without Nintendo in the market, all we're left with are big budget games that take a decade to make, focus on graphics over content and have little creativity or originality.

Do we really want nothing but bro games and cheap indies, remasters and annual rehashes? Give Nintendo a fair chance is all I'm asking here.

Holy goddamn hell.

Calls out fanboys.

Then spews fanboy garbage.
