Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

Yes, one of us is certainly unable to follow the conversation and is instead determined to make this a console warrior argument, I think you're confused on which is which.

I'm very curious to hear how is this a console warrior argument. Can't wait. Let's hear it. Who's the console warrior?

ok lets try this again

what are you looking for now?

we dont have an answer about whether it can support these features natively in the future and Reggie has gone out of his way to be explicit avout the app doing it all

Wow, you guys sure like to go insane over things...

This will clearly need much more explanation and demonstration to prove either way what is the point of their meaning.

It sounds like Discord but tied to a paid platform. The question is if this is supplemental or the ONLY way to access certain online features. I can almost see the argument for offloading certain social aspects on to a platform that most people readily use already, but I can't qualify it until we see exactly where they've drawn the line.

OK I REALLY don't get it, I mean Nintendo is the last company that should make such a move, they are the most children friendly company out there, a big chunk of their user base is kids, lots of kids don't have a smartphone until they are relatively old (many parents are against it), they carry around basic phones or very old models, why the fuck would you limit them from playing with their friends Mario Kart?

No sense whatsoever.

did you read ANY of the thinks that have been linked for your convenience

they are being beyond explicit on this right now

its actually sad that Reggie doesnt even hint at a brighter future of integrated OS aupport through software updates

they are doubling down on this app shit

Here, you don't need to search too much for information:

Maybe it's done like this to protect the children from voice chat and give parents more control over the internet aspect?

I'm still baffled by the decision, there's got to be some reasoning behind this.

Geeesh.. just wait until we actually know anything about their online plans.. There will be free online trial until the app is released, so all we know is that we can play online free until fall, seems like the app is not needed for playing online then..

You are saying I'm in denial, and playing dumb with Nintendos statements, like I have an emotional reason to defy logic and am intentionally ignoring some obvious fact.

You could instead say, something like, "We never got confirmation that the switch would do apps, and games, so it looks very unlikely this close to launch." or "I don't think so."

Instead, you are attacking my presumed willful ignorance and implying that I'm playing dumb. Even though you don't actually even know the answer to my question, which is not that crazy. Whats crazy is that Im asking these questions because I feel the same way about these potential scenarios as you guys. That they make no sense, and are a dumb decision. I just said a page or two back that if this is true they are morons. Not everyone who looks for reasonable explanations for things is in denial. I just haven't comfortably reached the conclusion that you clearly have.

there were rumors that the switch would support nintendo's mobile games, thanks in part to its tablet form. im asking if we know or not if switch does or does not support smart device apps. i was also asking if we know whether or not switch supports bluetooth headsets, cuz what about gaming from home, you know?

He explained it. There shouldn't be "more explanation" for a console that's just over a month from release.

And my preliminary thoughts on this are that they want to encourage children to interact with their friends...You know, in real life. Switch is portable for a few reasons, that being one of them.

Online appears to be a patchwork to placate those that have become accustomed to playing that way, which would explain why they're (seemingly) going out of their way to distance themselves from certain issues about it (literally).

NoJ console decisions are probably also handled through a phone app.
You know, this is very understated. It took Sony to get the American branch involved to basically make the PS4 opposite of what the PS3 was. Maybe Nintendo of Japan should get some feedback from Nintendo of America...oh who am I kidding? That company is ass backwards and their decisions are baffling all around.

So paying for online and the cumbersome method of for voice chat and matchmaking with friends is actually a punishment from Nintendo for the ones who would rather play online instead of going outside and play? Nintendo is really bad at parenting in this case.

Oh Nintendo - so baffling. No matter what happens the launch messaging for switch is worse than it Xbox one's.

It really is baffling that they would announce an online paid subscription, but not announce price or details, so everybody is confused and don't know what to think and we end up with a retarted thread like this where noone knows what they are talking about and most are speculating doom and gloom, when it might be a pointless fee and a brilliant solution or just the other way around.. this thread should just be closed until more information is available.. all it does is create more doubt in people's minds about the Switch, when we should just wait until facts arrive.. but still the facts should have been provided right away by Nintendo.. Baffling move indeed!!

lets be honest

they clearly dont have software engineers with the right experience training and background to build a proper integrated online OS like Sony and MS have

hell they are even outsourcing to DeNA to get help with mobile

My assumption is that they are so far behind as a company right now

they need to reorganize and rebuild

NoJ should also get help from Sony in America.

I can picture Nintendo meetings at their HQ in Japan. A huge boardroom table surrounded by 70yr old plus businessman. All dressed in suits with stern faces, and all having little idea how the modern 'online' world functions in anyway.

Heads nod in the middling darkness as a poor younger member of staff has to attempt to persuade them that their latest approval is a terrible idea.

SONY got away with this when they pretty much gave full creative reign to Sony of America etc for the PS4, and we can see how that turned out.

I keep seeing this sort of statement and it makes me really sad that the Xbox 1 launch fiasco is not remembered for the seriously dark scenario it was. Switch being another Nintendo console with baffling dumb features/lack of is not new or in any way shape or form worse than online only, face checking DRM, limited game sharing, and a de facto used games monopoly by Gamestop exclusively.

I don't believe it! there has to be some back end to it on the OS that handles match making and Part Chat

A phone app alone cannot seriously be handling all the functions online play, otherwise it completely invalidates a subscription fee for online as you'd need a Smart Phone and contract as well

I am convinced that this is typically Nintendo ballsing up the communication of something AGAIN and that they are just constantly talking about something akin to the playstation app only its much better at handling matchmaking/messages/parties etc

seriously they just cannot be handling all online through the app, matchmaking via the phone cannot work, let alone party chat (might as well use Skype), to me the talk about using the phone for party chat on the go confirms it, you'd need headphones for the game audio and headphones on your phone for party chat you'd need 4 ears for that set up to work! It surely means you use the mic/headphones with the switch and control muting of audio, volume, joining & leaving parties via your phone so you don't need to go into the Switch menu during a game

seriously though Nintendo need a demo video of this ASAP

He explained it. There shouldn't be "more explanation" for a console that's just over a month from release.

But have we seen how it works?

The problem is that even though he's explaining it, I'm not getting a good picture of what he's describing, precisely because it sounds slightly off-putting.

I'm not saying I don't believe him, I just would rather see for myself how they've actually implemented this concoction before getting riled up about it.

I agree that this makes no sense whatsoever but I don't know where you've gotten the idea that kids who would have videogame consoles don't have smartphones or are limited to really old models.

I bet you'll have to generate a code using your phone and then enter it on your console or something.

Regardless, if this all ends up being as dumb as it sounds, I just won't be playing Nintendo games online anymore.

Look, I get the "Stupid Nintendo" narrative here but it should be obvious to anyone that all online features are in the console itself, and it is only voice chat/parties that are tied to the app (which is a dumb thing to tie to an app). It's weird and annoying, but it's not like people without smartphones aren't gonna be able to play online. I mean, Mario Kart 8 launches with full online functionality before this app launches. CLEARLY you can play online without it. Reggie's "matchmaking" thing strikes me as nothing more than him using a buzzword about online play that he knows (plus this is how you would join friend lobbies).

Not defending any of this, just hoping to clear up some confusion.

Yes.

I will say this, if I need to use a mobile device to play online after paying for an online service, I'm out. In a Nintendo fanboy and this whole thing just reeks of stupidity.

Then Reggie should speak his words clearly?

Thank you. Now GET OUT OF DENIAL, GAF. Just, stop. It's embarrassing. More embarrassing than matchmaking over the phone.

Game matchmaking is done by the console, not the phone, I don't know why some of you guys think that would be done by the app when he is clearly talking about voice lobbies matchmaking.

Voice/chat lobbies are managed by the app, wich sucks anyway.

Parties alone is a terrible idea. If we have two switches in the house, we need two smartphones to join a group? This may be the straw that gets me to cancel my preorder. I just can't support sooooo many terrible decisions.

If it's just voice chat, fine (but dumb). Groups should never be relegated to an app though.

so you dont know the answer to my question, thanks. dont need the implications that im a fanboy in denial or unable to think logically, thanks for that too anyways.
"Instead of having some sort of bulky gamer headset, you’ll be able to do it right off your smartphone, put in your earbuds that you use for your standard mobile device."

That is but one of the (in my mind) very clear official statements that right now the Switch can't handle voice chat, but make of it what you will.
Personally I will remain a skeptic until Nintendo claims that the Switch CAN handle voice chat itself, usually features are something a former VP of Marketing would communicate in no uncertain terms.

I will say this, if I need to use a mobile device to play online after paying for an online service, I'm out. In a Nintendo fanboy and this whole thing just reeks of stupidity.

Same here, If voice comms and party management is not something I can do natively via the console I'm out.

Also if it's not clarified before launch I'm cancelling.

This.

They're REALLY going to have to tighten the ship when it comes to their Switch messaging altogether.

Stop saying we like to go insane. We are not going insane. This is just an outrageous misstep.

Wait, wait.....

Not sure if I'm ready this right or about home usage with the app for matchmaking...etc.

But I think he's trying to say that if you want to play online while you are on the go you can use the phone app to automatically tether your phone to use it's data to play. That's interesting... Kinda scary but interesting...

I don't think Nintendo fans use online multiplayer. Honestly, I consider myself one and really only played Smash and Mario Kart online for a few hours at most. I generally prefer local couch co-op or playing bots/computers.

This is objectively false.
