Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

Agreed. If Nintendo wasn't so secretive and confusing about this kind of thing, this could all have been avoided.

Regardless, you can play online with your smartphone (thankfully).

Why I hate when Reggie opens his mouth. I never learn much of value. He just spout out a bunch of shit and I'm more confused that ever.

I have a strong feeling he's kept on a pretty tight leash held by NoJ. They really need to pull a Sony and give the reigns to NoA - truth is they probably understand the market better.

Come on, people: Nintendo had no trouble communicating the concept of more complex and esotheric features like HD rumble or the IR Camera. They used simple visual demonstrations and easily-relatable analogies to communicate exactly what they wanted you to understand.

The repeated - and at this stage seemingly deliberate - vagueness about this 'voice chat app' (not to mention the repeition of the erroneous stock PR speil about 'bulky gaming headsets') tells you all you need to know here.

It is as bad as it sounds and at present they're just trying to avoid placing any focus on it.

The confusing thing is the console is out in 6 weeks and it's still basically a vague mystery box. Who makes purchases like that, I would wager most consumers spending 400 bucks would at least like to know what the OS is like or the actual specs are like.

I'm gonna wait for release before making any judgement, but it's gonna be hella fun to watch people melt down over this in the meantime.

This is my thought as well.

Why rush to criticize the product and pass judgement based on a few sentences? I am looking forward to the reveal of the app. It might actually be a pretty smart idea.

It doesn't matter whether you're pro or anti-Nintendo, really. Reggie's comments have A LOT of people debating whether to cancel their preorder. That's not good.

I'm fine buying a console and it needing tweaks. It sounds like this whole gaming experience with the Switch was rushed and early adopters will basically be beta testers.

Controls can't charge while being played? Pfft, that way you don't have to deal with the hassle anymore!

Lobbies and voice chat? Don't worry about the hassle of
Using the console, you can use your own phone!

Porting your VC titles and games before? Sure, we could. We like seeing you all squirm.

I'm keeping my preorder for now, but Nintendo needs to turn this ship around really quick.

has anyone tweeted this thread to reggie yet? they need to start doing damage control whether its been miscommunicated or not

Aside of all this stupid solution, is who will pay for a second online platform, because Nintendo is basically the second platform after PS4 or XBO. Maybe PC gamers will.

This is asinine. Gonna cancel my preorder and wait until holidays when I can get at least two good single player games since I'm clearly not going to be engaging with any of this multiplayer bullshit.

If the price is right, I will. I have little faith in Nintendo for most online-related things, but all subscription/microtransaction stuff they have done so far has been surprisingly very fairly priced. If it is $20-30/year, I'll bite. If it is XBL/PS+ pricing it is a dead network before it starts.

I'm pretty sure Reggie is too busy chatting with high school buddies about getting their hands on Switch to sign up for Twitter

I'm a primarily PC gamer and I am thinking right now of cancelling my pre order and just playing Zelda on cemu. Maybe once things come in focus in the holidays I will buy the switch

So... I think I've cracked the code of Reggie's comments and I now know how the Switch's online will work!

- All matchmaking, lobbies, and voice chat are handled through your slim and sleek smartphone rather than your "bulky" Switch and a "gamer" headset.

- In order to start matchmaking for a given game, you'll need to spend "tickets"

- "tickets" can be earned by playing games or purchased through My Nintendo

- Party chat will be handled like conference calls. You invite friends from your friends list and create a 12 digit "Pin" that they'll enter to access the lobby.

- If you liked "The Barrens" in World of Warcraft, you'll love Nintendo's general chat for games! Hop in the general lobby for Splatoon 2 and you'll be able to chat with every other active user playing at that time. You can mute other players by locating their character in the game and asking them politely to stop talking.

- Adding new friends requires that you first add them in Miitomo. Through doing so, you can add them to your Switch friends list by proving you know them! Answer a question with the last response your friend gave in Miitomo and you're ready to play! Be careful though, emoji and special characters count!

I don't know about you guys but I'm hyped!

I don't think Nintendo fans use online multiplayer. Honestly, I consider myself one and really only played Smash and Mario Kart online for a few hours at most. I generally prefer local couch co-op or playing bots/computers.

That's what I'm sayin. If this app isn't gods gift to gaming then what in the fuck are you doing Nintendo

More like gods gift to Satan... "Gotcha bitch!"

so, if I wanted to hear voice chat and game audio through the same headphones........?

we need to stage an intervention

It's going to be terrible. I can already hear all the voice chat with all the loud TVs in the background because this solution Nintendo came up with is inadequate.

And I like you!

I wonder when Nintendo will do a full reveal of its online services, the OS, and the Virtual Console. I hope they realize everyone is on the edge of their seat.

*Hug*

Yeah, I would HOPE this is something they have planned. It would be ridiculous if they thought that presentation was clear enough for everyone. They have a shit-ton of explaining/real-world demonstration to do all around.

Right now, I just want to play BotW, man...Haha!

Exactly...I think people need to start getting themselves ready for this now with the VERY slight possibility that things will actually be better.

Agreed.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the system itself is launching earlier than it was supposed to for Zelda's launch. Zelda was probably ready to go and they knew people were ready to fuckin' erupt (what with the Wii U version being delayed over and over), and they knew it needed to be a Switch launch game too (to sell it). Wouldn't be surprised if the Switch was meant to be a Fall 2017 release but now it's out early.

The weird thing about this is that I'm least likely to use voice chat when I'm out and about. It's a solution for the smallest use case. Here's hoping it's not at the expense of the logical implementation.

Everything about this networking infrastructure sounds silly, and it's coming pretty clearly from the official channels. I'm still holding out hope this is a communication mistake, and there's a standard/reasonable system in place with the cellphone app as an option that can communicate with the built-in software.

Mind you, that doesn't make sense that they would engineer the solution twice.

I like the idea. It seems that we will use voice chat with the phone without using any headset, you just drop it near you and start talking. This is cool, I hate using earphones (never used the one on my PS4 and used a bluetooth one maybe 3 times on the PS3).

By using a separate app, they dont have much limitation in the console, they dont need to specify some memory and processing power (even if little) for voice chat and stuff.

I think its a nice way to move and I hope they implement it well - then in the next gen the other consoles might follow that trend.

No one is following this joke of a plan. Maybe an optional app, but not mandatory.

On top of this, Reggie doesn't comment so damn much on things that are supposed to not be shown until later. This is him sweetening the pill.

It appears to me that the "Free Trial" they speak of only refers to the most basic online multiplayer on the Switch itself. Everything else seems to be part of this premium smartphone app which won't be ready until Fall 2017.

Source: http://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/

Look at the table.

so it isn't actually a free trial of their online service, because their proper online service won't actually be ready until they start charging for it?

Thats crappy because we'll now have 6 months of uncertainty as to what the full offering will be (and therefore lots more noise), plus 6 months of whatever limited online functionality is built into these early games (including presumably Splatoon 2)

You don't need your smartphone to play Breath of the Wild on the Switch, though.

they dont even have a good option for traditional gamers at home on console mode

there are no audio ports on the joycon grip or the pro controller

its wireless or nothing

or hey... tether through your phone and have the tv audio backfeed to all your buddies annoyingly

I have a Windows Phone. Guess I'm screwed.

I'm in the same boat. My only option currently is to whip out my 10" tablet to chat on the Switch, which seems ridiculous to me.

That was other thing I thought was funny about his comment. I can't wrap my head around voice chatting while not in a private setting.

Am I wrong? I honestly have never heard about or experienced this. Is this something people do?

Then Reggie should speak his words clearly?

Nintendo's approach is incomprehensible to me. You'd think Microsoft's disaster in announcing the no used game/always online stuff with the Xbox One would have been a warning to them. There was no clear message or plan which made everyone either assume the worst or just imagine what those 'features' meant. To this day we still don't know for sure what the truth was about the original Xbox One features because they had to backtrack so hard.

Yet here is Nintendo with a message as clear as mud about a console that's on the verge of being released and everyone is just assuming the worst again. Who'd have thunk?

GAFs been talking about Nintendo's problems and what they should do to turn things around for years. If they read GAF (or any other message board, really) it doesn't show. They simply don't care.

just because they look at whats going on on GAF doesnt mean theyre taking notes on what we want or think. which is a good thing btw

Yeah, the 4m+ people who bought Splatoon just played the single player campaign, clearly.

Doesn't seem like they're taking many notes on what any gamers want, let alone GAF. Which is a very bad thing to do imo, especially when they're in their current position.

You would wonder what sort of internal review and decision making process goes on to reach this point. As many have stated in this thread and others it is a perplexing "solution" to a problem that Nintendo's competitors solved years ago.

It is very evident that the competition between Sony and Microsoft has been very good for the development of Playstation and Xbox with both firms clearly taking on board improvements and ideas implemented by the other (hardware wise). XBL inspiring PSN, PS+ inspiring GwG, 360 controller driving a redesign of the Dualshock and of course the used game always online madness.

To remain competitive Nintendo simply cannot continue to ignore trends and what their competitors are doing. You might say they are not competing for the same people, I'd agree to an extent but more and more in that demographic are moving to the others. I know people in work with young children who've purchased them a PS4 as they like having a blu ray player, Netflix and a games console all in one. The conversation was always "between Xbox and PS, that's what their friends have". The kids can play Minecraft and FIFA along with all their friends almost hassle free. All this messing about with phone apps and connectivity is just adding more barriers and complications to what should be a rudimentary process in this day and age.

Ha, that's a good point. You can't connect your phone to wireless and make it hotspot at the same time. At least on Android. So even on places where you have access to wireless network (like home) all this will eat out of your mobile data plan.

Edit: It should work via the wireless router though.

Yeah it will work by the router. But when you are travelling around it is actually going to cost to use the ap, crazy.

I'm a Nintendo fan and I don't play online multiplayer much because they don't let me do so.
Some of my friends were interested in Smash, Mario Kart and Splatoon but the lack of voice chat just killed the interest. I tried once to play Mario Kart with a friend while we were on Skype with our phones and it was a mess. There's no excuse for their stupidity.

just because they look at whats going on on GAF doesnt mean theyre taking notes on what we want or think. which is a good thing btw
Because listing to the people who are most invested and interested in your platform is bad? I'm not saying we're always right, but a lot of the changes made to the Xbox One originated from pressure from GAF and other online communities.

I have more hours logged into COD: Black Ops 2 and Ghosts on the Wii U than my Xbox 360 and Xbox One combined. I am a huge fan of the Wii U Pro controller, and I felt the games just played smoother on the Wii U than the other consoles.

I also have played MK8, Smash and Splatoon online - and even going back and revisiting the older COD titles on the Wii, which are still online! Expect World at War though.

Regardless of the reception of Reggie's statement, I am excited to see what features and how the app will work. It might end up being a really smart idea. I actually use my iPhone currently with my out-of-state because for some reason, Xbox party chat doesn't work for us, so we just use FaceTime audio.
