Donald Trump gets nothing from me. Fuck anyone telling me he's owed that. Cause if we're playing the "owed" game, then this country "owes" my people a goddamn lot. So being told I owe some racist fuck respect has lost their damn mind.

Nah. I think because he insulted people who share my skintone and other PoC he shouldn't be treated equally. Thinking he's allowed to say such shit and still be treated with respect is childish.

This isn't 1940, we don't have to fall in line with someone who hates us because we're not white. He'll get respect when he gives shows it to the rest of us. Fuck him and fuck anyone telling me he's owed my respect, the only thing Trump is owed from my his a brick to the face.

And more on the point, what exactly is it with some of you folks and this idea that white people in charge are "owed" respect by minorities? I hear this so damn much it tilts me.

This. Am I in an alternate reality where people didn't lose their shit about Obama for 8 damn years over wild allegations of being basically the Antichrist? It was the first time I had ever seen a president put up with someone yell "you lie!" While he gave a speech to Congress.

Meanwhile, we have video,tweets,and rallies of evidence of why people are pissed about Trump.

Anger looks the same but context is king. I'm at the point where I just see the "get over it" and "you're the same as republicans in 08" crowd as full of shit trolls.
 
I don't know how long the protests will be going on for, but I'll be at work most of the day.
I really wish I could join the protests.

This motherfucker called for his followers to kill Hillary, called for Russia to hack her emails, his campaign promises literally rely on breaking the constitution, he's a unreemable bigot, and he has no qualifications whatsoever to be president. This is not being childish, this is looking at the facts.

Being president does not absolve you from being a completely terrible and broken human being.

I live outside of DC, so, I know the pain of fellow Virginians and out of towners who may try to get in there on Saturday on the Metro (good luck!)

That said, some of my family is coming down from PA and I got them some Metro passes in case they run out of cards at the stations. I will be with you all in spirit. Stay safe!

I never said protesting was pointless, I said protesting his inauguration is pointless. The idea of a protest is to affect change, a general Trump protest a mere month after he won a fair democratic election isn't going to change anything, no matter how much people would like it to. Protesting specific issues and/or policies enacted is different.

To put it more simply. You have direct control over whether or not Trump stays the President. You do not have direct control over the way your elected representatives vote. Protesting draconian abortion laws or advocating for criminal justice reform puts legislators on notice about the will of the people regarding these issues and thus can affect their vote. However, there is no need to generally protest Trump because all that is required for you to change things is to vote on election day.
 
Trumpers sure stay quiet until threads like this. They have nothing to say in the various other negative threads on his administration so far but oh no people are going to protest the Donald. They are showing disrespect to his Presidency! And that is worth arguing over to these people.

It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Protests also are capable of empowering other individuals that feel vulnerable to know that there is a larger group of people that are demanding change.

Or are you incapable of seeing how a middle class White woman in rural America could feel let down by her country but then due to protests happening nationwide she could feel empowered to become a catalyst of change herself? Multiply that by x amount for other individuals. You keep momentum and you let others know that we are united in demanding for progress that results in equality for all. So maybe those people that felt apathetic and hopeless with voting will come out in 2018, 2020, and etc.

It also helps congresswomen and congressmen see that they are being watched [and supported]

I've honestly decided the phrase "I dislike Trump as much as anyone but..." means that you don't actually truly know why many people dislike Trump nor have you truly internalized the potential damage he and his cabinet can do to the civil rights and lives of Americans in general, disenfranchised or otherwise.

He hasn't done anything, sure...except take the first steps to dismantle the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The act that ensures I will always have access to coverage for the prescription drug I depend on to survive.

Yes, preexisting denials will likely still be illegal, but with the mandate gone other just as important protections will disappear. Primarily, the caps on lifetime benefits and annual out of pocket expenses. I will now be exposed to potential bankruptcy down the road if and when I hit these caps. If I had known that this would happen I would have never had children. They depend on me and now thanks to Trump and the GOP I could very well become a burden to them and my wife.

When I hit the cap my choices after financial ruin will be: commit a felony to get sent to prison for care, flee the country and hope to start over in a more civilized place as an illegal immigrant, or die 'accidentally' to give my family one last boost via a life insurance payout.

But yeah it's stupid to protest Trump's inauguration. It's only a matter of life and death (financial and actual) for me. I'd be better served just lying down and waiting to hit my cap and have my life ruined.

I want to watch just to see how big the protests are. Like can we get heckling going on during the swearing in? The blatant disrespect these people showed to Obama for the past 8 years was ridiculous and now they put an actual moron in charge.

This is not about the election anymore and I don't doubt that you know that. I also don't doubt that you know that there's no reason to believe people's efforts to change things will simply stop at protesting.

You're right. He hasn't released his tax returns, he hasn't divested his business to a blind trust, he hasn't done due diligence on his executive office picks (let alone nominated anyone below the top level in each department).

He also hasn't shown any respect to those who disagree with him. Why does he deserve anything other than contempt from those who believe him to be damaging to their country?

I think we will all know this speech is meaningless anyway. It'll be platitudes, "presidential Trump" until someone annoys him on Twitter again. His actions up until now have not been exemplary and frankly he will be judged every day for the next 4 years. If he or his sycophants don't like it, he should call his past self to ask why he embarked on the birther conspiracy for so long.

Most people won't continue past protesting, or wearing different clothes, or attaching a safety pin. Slacktivism at its finest.

Big kudos to those who will continue to organise rallies and get their local communities and governments involved in their cause though, they're the real MVPs.

1. He wasn't democratically elected. The electoral college made him win. He had less overall votes.

2. How is protesting not picking up a clipboard? Organized peaceful protests are the best way to show the people in power that we are not satisfied with our current government.

I was actually invited to a Protest viewing party this weekend by my conservative friends. Apparently they consider this a Meltdown of epic proportions and are throwing a party in its honor...

So the people who put him there are willing to put up with it , I don't see that changing until things get worse and he fails to deliver.

I've been complaining about it for as long as I've been aware of how the EC works. If the situation was reversed I'd also be complaining.

Edit: also the purpose of the electoral college is to stop people like Trump from getting into power. Which they failed to do, so I'll bitch about that too.

No, I think the way the EC works is stupid as fuck too, but the reality is that the rules for the election were made clear to everyone before it occurred, and there wasn't a nation-wide complaint about it as far as I can recall.

Also, what same error? The percentage of eligible voters who either voted republican or didn't vote? I assumed that would have been around 50%, but who knows.

Edit: so 46% of eligible voters who actually went out and voted decided on trump. Is that what you were going on about? 4%? That's ignoring the many people who didn't vote and were likely able, so they're obviously happy with whatever they get.
 
Do people not know that weed is legal in DC? It's not like people are risking arrest if they blaze up. Doing it in a public place surrounded by other people inhaling second hand smoke is a douche move though. They should catch some attention from law enforcement it they do that.

And remind me when was the last time the EC was brought up in a national discourse? Your point here is, "You can't complain about it now when you didn't complain about it before" when a sizable chunk of the nation did not know about it until recently.

So people really think protests accomplish nothing? It's a pretty easy formula...

Make a big public demonstration about a point of view, get covered by the media (all media), which spreads the message of that protest to lots of people = more people talking about issue than before = increased likelihood of something changing.

Even at a basic level, "there is a point". Not to mention history has proven it effective.

Also, seriously, The Donald is blatantly egregious.
