Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

If a person doesn't have a smartphone, nor takes their phone wherever they go, I doubt they were even getting the Switch in the first place.

I know several video game fans personally who use pay-as-you-go phones for talking/text. They own gaming PCs and PS4s, would be very interested in Switch. I guess fuck them though, right?

Not sure what the problem is.

If it means I can make the Switch connect to my phone as an access point, and I can put my earphones in my phone for online chat, then that means I can play online, on a bus and chat to people too?

The only people this makes life slightly difficult for, is kids without a phone.

If its an option then fine. If its mandatory then it sort of defeats the purpose of the Switch being marketed as a home console, having a home console price and having games priced as home console games.

Exclusive look at the first person playing Nintendo Switch online:

Hee heeeeeeeeee!

maybe to free up as mush resources as possible?

How much ram would voice chat need?

IDK, but considering the OG Xbox had voice chat, maybe the system they developed at first was so poorly optimised that they felt they had no choice going that way.

A shame, really.

Talk about finding a solution to something that was never a problem.

Call me stupid but what's the reasoning behind this?
Most likely they want to drag switch users into their mobile ecosystem and mobile users into their Switch ecosystem.

They'll eventually say it's to protect the children though.

How do you suppose you play online in a way that isn't "matchmaking"?
Dedicated servers but obviously that would require too much effort from Nintendo.

Either that or Friend Codes.

Edit:Oh you think I'm saying matchmaking is in name only or something. No I mean without matchmaking or dedicated servers you're pretty much 'online' in name only.

Haha, imagine going with some friends in one place together to play on your Switches and needing to set up the game via smartphone despite all of you being there. And everybody must go on his or her smartphone to join. Hilarious.
I think that the Switch have a Lan multiplayer like the 3DS... Looks like this is for online multiplayer.

And the audio from the Switch? I do not buy that this app can handle juggling live audio and chat merging, balancing, and control - I've yet to see this explained or had any examples of where this is already being achieved

Apart from making your Switch connect to your router, instead of your phone, whats the difference?

You'll still have to use your phone app to chat.

Alright yeah, I have to load an app on my phone to enable online chat, rather than just plugging straight into the Switch, but I honestly don't see then issue people are having.

What about those with children who want to play Mario Kart? I'm going to have to lend my phone to my kid every time she wants to do some online multiplayer? Because I'm sure as heck not buying her an iPhone just so she can play the Switch online...

I really think that in Nintendo of Japans severely lagging and outdated hive mind on anything modern day, that they believe young children don't have smart phones. So limiting the chat function to a smartphone app, will somehow protect these children from the horrors of the internet.

What they don't realise is that most children are born with a phone already in their hands.

An interesting note on the Nintendo Switch online service page -

http://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/

is

* Online services require a Nintendo Account. Starting in fall 2017, some online services will also require a paid subscription. Paid online service availability may be limited based on location.

So if the paid online service covers online chat, and the only way to get chat is through the paid online service, what do people do who are in locations where it's not available?.
Another question arises: what is the paid online subscription for if it doesn't even come with basic features? The app costs money in addition to paying for online. What is this madness? Nintendo is just f'ing greedy and nickle and dining their most hardcore fans.

How are you going to chat and listen to the game audio at the same time on your bus? Double headphones?

I am guessing MS could tweak the Xbox App to do a similar thing right? The community and groups stuff is there already.

I will be watching to see how this pans out for Nintendo. Seems like an interesting way to deal with party chat and grouping up. I do wonder how robust it is. Dropping out of groups and chat due to connection issues or incompatibility will be a massive pain in the ass. Thankfully they have a beta period to iron things out.

Nintendo charging a yearly subscription and also charging for the app?

They took it to the next level LOL

Nintendo has not announced that you need to pay to download the app. I highly doubt that will be the case.

So its confirmed that Splatoon 2 online lobby is like Splatoon 1. GG Nintendo.

Nothing has been confirmed about Splatoon 2's lobby. Splatoon 2 wasn't specifically mentioned in Reggie's statement.

I have to assume that local play (Switch to Switch) will work v differently and not require any of the online infrastructure whatsoever, no?

please

I don't think it's an "elitist" stance to say that if a person doesn't have a smartphone, nor takes their phone with them, is more than likely not getting a Switch.

The Switch is the newest technology. Smartphones are more of a common thing in 2017, as a lot of people have one. And the majority of people always have their phones on them, or close in proximity, smartphone or not, in 2017.

Those that do not have a smartphone in 2017, and leave their house regularly without their phone (of any kind), would not be investing in the latest technology.

To be fair, a $300 US device that has a 3 hour battery life, no voice chat, no Netflix, no way to party up, has a monthly subscription to online, and has like 20 games doesn't sound like the 'newest technology'.

It's more of the case of how does one set of headphones (with mic) handle game audio and game chat from the phone?.

Not defending any of this, but in Canada (where we are gouged for phones) you can get a pay-as-you-go Android smartphone for like $60 CAD.
